To smoke in my own garden

LittleBear4 · 21/04/2019 16:54

I am a smoker. I smoke 10 fags a day and I'm not planning on giving it up yet (one day!).

In smoke in my garden, I've got two neighbours either side and one every time I'm smoking will come out and say 'it stinks out here' and will start to cough loudly.

It's really getting on my nerves, I can't move down the end of the garden because it's tiny and would make no difference at all but AIBU to hate the passive aggressive comments when I'm smoking in my garden?

Did you choose to start smoking before if after having children? If it was after having children then you can't say you're smoking outside to protect them because you wouldn't smoke at all if you wanted to protect them from it.

Eastermoaner · 21/04/2019 19:41

My downstairs neighbour smokes in her balcony and it travels up to mine. Every time I go out I can smell it, it is totally disgusting and really infuriates me as I have 3 kids including a 2 week old baby. I also leave washing out there to dry so no doubt the second hand smoke is sticking to that.
Second hand smoke is vile. Build a smokers shed or smoke out your front.

Ellenborough · 21/04/2019 19:45

Yes I care about my children more than my neighbours, shocking I know.

I'll put headphones on, thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, great. Carry on being an inconsiderate twat but just make sure you can't hear them when they complain. Perfect solution to the problem. Hmm

soworriedforhim · 21/04/2019 19:47

@LittleBear4 haven’t read the whole thread but interested how wide your garden is and how far you smile from fence and their houses? I smoke in my garden and never thought it was an issue!

Decormad38 · 21/04/2019 19:48

But smoke doesn’t stay in your garden. It drifts into other peoples and into their lungs. So YABU. I’ve seen the effects of passive smoking on people’s lungs ( respiratory ward sister). It’s not nice.

huggybear · 21/04/2019 19:51

Can you not do it out the front?

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 21/04/2019 19:51

In smoke in my garden, I've got two neighbours either side and one every time I'm smoking will come out and say 'it stinks out here' and will start to cough loudly.

I'd suggest musing loudly to yourself: "There's an irritating whine coming from somewhere out here ..."

So what will you do OP? Now the message should have hit home loud and clear?

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 21/04/2019 20:01

Yabu I have 2 smokers either side, chain smokers out there rain or shine

Not really comparable to ten a day!

Emily1091 · 21/04/2019 20:03

You have every right to smoke in your garden and it can’t bring up that much of a stink if you are smoking out doors it’s not like your blowing in their faces. I’d tell them to mind their own. If you smoker inside of your home they would still have something to say. Next time they do something that is mildly annoying be vocal about it see how they like it haha

bluedinosaurroars · 21/04/2019 20:17

Well your habit would trigger an asthma attack in me at the moment, which is always fun...especially when I've stayed at home already avoiding the pub gardens because I'll likely be surrounded by selfish bastards and their suffocating fags.

motherheroic · 21/04/2019 20:48

If the gardens are as small as you say, I would be annoyed about my washing stinking of smoke.

SoupDragon · 21/04/2019 20:52

I’d tell them to mind their own

Why would you think you have the right to police what they can and can't say in their own garden?

soworriedforhim · 21/04/2019 20:52

@Ellenborough you sound like a dick. Smoking is firstly legal, secondly smoking is illegal most places now except someone’s own garden.

If our government made it illegal or didn’t reap £9 billion in taxes to support the economy and NHS (of which smoking diseases cost substantially less to treat) you may have a point. Where should OP smoke given cigarettes exist, it’s addictive, people smoke and the government hasn’t made it illegal?

I bet you do annoying shit too love!

ExceedExpectations · 21/04/2019 20:53

it sincerely pisses me off if I can’t open my own windows on a warm day like this without someone smoking outside. Great for my kids eh?
Just a thought.

Yes it’s your garden but at least be a bit considerate.

TacoLover · 21/04/2019 20:53

I imagine it's quite unpleasant to have that disgusting smell in your garden 10 times a day, 365 days a year... probably a lot more unpleasant than a few PA commentsConfused

12pinkchairs · 21/04/2019 21:02

I've lived next to stinky smoking neighbours it's gross 🤷‍♀️

holly873 · 21/04/2019 21:02

I'll say it again. Her garden her castle. If neighbours are so easily offended then they should move to a detached house in the sticks.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 21/04/2019 21:02

For some people, yes, for others no. But that's part and parcel of living cheek-by-jowl. You might also find it quite unpleasant to have to put up with people cooking curry, or people cooking bacon, or people chanting meditative syllables, or people playing music or mowing the lawn or drilling holes or getting their tits out or trampolining or having a domestic. The only way to escape other people is to live on a remote island!

TheCatDidSay · 21/04/2019 21:03

Is that a true 10 a day or a when the doctor asks you how much you smoke 10 a day. Do no friends or family also come round and smoke. Even in 12 hours 10 is nearly 1 every hour. Could you imagine getting up and down opening and closing windows nearly every hour because someone else is stinking out.

SlappingJoffrey · 21/04/2019 21:05

It is also her neighbour's garden, their castle. They can say what they like in it. If OP is so easily offended, she should move to a detached house in the sticks. She is BU.

Minkies11 · 21/04/2019 21:07

Hope you give up the fags OP - the change in your life/health is amazing.

holly873 · 21/04/2019 21:08

Yes, op should not be so easily offended. Op is doing nothing illegal.

SlappingJoffrey · 21/04/2019 21:12

OP didn't actually ask whether she was BU to smoke though, much less whether it's legal. That's not what this thread is about. She asked if she was BU to be pissed off about her neighbours commenting on the actions her actions have on them. She's a hypocrite.
