Growth finishes 2 years after periods start?

Justicegf · 17/04/2019 20:40

Just that really.
That's what all the articles say, that girls have reached their full height by 2 years after their periods have started.
Does that fit with you and your daughters?

True for me, I started at 11 and reached my full height of 5’5 by 12. I was always very tall for my age until I got overtaken by lots of people in our early teens.

Hotterthanahotthing · 17/04/2019 21:31

My DD was tall at 5'5" in primary school when her periods started, she has only grown another inch and lots of her school friends have overtaken her.
She is taller than me asI have lost an inch and that is all she cares about!

cuppycakey · 17/04/2019 21:31

Certainly not true here.

I started aged 12.

At age 21 I was 5ft 3. By the time I was 25 I had grown another 2 inches and was 5 ft 5 Grin Even GP was shocked.

managedmis · 17/04/2019 21:32

Another myth.

My mother swears I've grown two inches recently : I'm 37!

Maybe she's shrunk?

stucknoue · 17/04/2019 21:32

It worked for mine but they were late developers (14 & 15)

Ninkaninus · 17/04/2019 21:34

Yes, this is true for me and for my daughters.

It is hormonal in basis and as mentioned previously, has to do with periods triggering the beginning of the process of bones fusing.

It is of course not going to be exact for everyone, and there will always be outliers.

Buggeritimgettingup · 17/04/2019 21:36

Not for my daughter ahe started at nine and grew til 16, possibly true for me as i was around 14.

PippilottaLongstocking · 17/04/2019 21:36

I’d already stopped growing about a year before I got my first period (I was a very tall 12 year old though)

Wafflenose · 17/04/2019 21:37

It's probably an average statistic, as the bones usually start to fuse soon after, like a PP said.

I started at 13.5 and carried on growing until I was 17, but quite slowly. Maybe just another couple of inches after starting, and I ended up 5'2".

DD1 started at 12.5 and 5'4". Her growth immediately slowed down, and a year later, she looks to be grinding to a halt. Not that it matters now - she's close to 5'6", and I guess being only 13, she might yet have another spurt.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/04/2019 21:41

My dd is 12 and 5ft 9 and hasn’t started her periods yet!

How tall is she going to be if this thread is true😁

mejon · 17/04/2019 21:42

I've heard this too but hope it's not true. Can't remember for me - I started at 13 I think and I'm 5'2". DD started a few weeks after turning 11 and she'll be 13 in August. She's a good few inches shorter than I am now so I really do hope she continues to grow. We're a short family so I know she's not going to be a giant but I hope she manages to get to 5ft at least.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 17/04/2019 21:42

I started my period at 10 and I stopped growing at around 12/13 so I would say this was true for me.

Jbck · 17/04/2019 21:45

Nope, DD1 started nearly 4 years ago just grown another inch in the last year to oustrip me 😡, not 18 till Autumn and wouldnt be surprised if she grew another bit.

Im not sure exactly for me but pretty sure my dates are fairly close definitely grew quite a bit last 2 years in school. I’m still little though.

Will monitor DD2 over the next 4 or so years 😆

Badtasteflump · 17/04/2019 21:46

Not me - started at 12, didn’t get to 5ft 10 until about 18/19. Early teens I was pretty average height - so no more than around 5ft 6 or 7.

TwistinMyMelon · 17/04/2019 21:46

I would say that's pretty accurate. I was 5'6 by the age of 14-15 and I started my period at age 12. Boys can keep growing until late teens/early twenties.

SecretWitch · 17/04/2019 21:47

We asked our gp as our daughter began her periods at age 11. She is very petite. He assured us that she will continue to grow until about age 17. I hope so, I’m just 4’11 and she is still two inches shorter.

OneDayillSleep · 17/04/2019 21:50

It was the case for me, periods started at 12 and I'm certain I didn't grow after 14. I'm only 5ft 3 though and reading other posts it seems to be the shorties that stopped growing at this point.

ladyflower23 · 17/04/2019 21:50

I started mine at 14 and stopped growing at 16 so true for me

Littlebird88 · 17/04/2019 21:54

not the case here. daughter 1 started just after 13 birthday is now 15.5 and still growing

echt · 17/04/2019 21:56

This might help:

MrsPinkCock · 17/04/2019 21:56

I think it’s bobbins.

I am the same height now as I was when I started periods. I grew tall very young.

DD is 13 and is still growing despite starting 3 years ago. And she’s tiny for her age so will definitely keep growing!

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 17/04/2019 21:56

I started mine at 11 and I'm 5ft 9, I was not 5ft 9 at 13.

firstbrightday · 17/04/2019 21:57

Would make sense for me. I was my full height of 5 ft 11 Blush at 13 and started my periods at 11.

HelpIcantfindaname · 17/04/2019 22:02

SCST01

How long ago was that....when she got meds to slow growth? I wasnt aware that was possible.
My daughter is just 10 but already 5'7" with size 9 feet. Her dad is 6'8". I'm hoping she slows down soon as cant keep up with all the new clothes she needs. I wasn't aware you could slow growth.
Dd10 has not started periods yet but is developing in other ways.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 17/04/2019 22:02

I would say so. dD started at 13, she isn’t any taller than when she was 15. Five foot two!
