Growth finishes 2 years after periods start?

Justicegf · 17/04/2019 20:40

Just that really.
That's what all the articles say, that girls have reached their full height by 2 years after their periods have started.
Does that fit with you and your daughters?

That's BS. I started mine at 11 and I'm 5ft7.as an adult. I probably didnt grow loads after ahe 13 but I was perhaps 5ft4/5ft5 at that age

lordofthefries · 17/04/2019 21:04

True for me

BrexitBirgit · 17/04/2019 21:04

Not true for my DD. Her growth has slowed yes, but not stopped. She was shooting as much as 1cm some months or so for a couple of years (around 11) and has now slowed to 1cm per year (14/15). Period started at 12. I can't remember my own growth or start of period but similar pattern: shot up end of primary and then was overtaken by the majority in secondary and ended an average 5'7

Chouetted · 17/04/2019 21:05

Utter nonsense. I started at 12 and wasn't even in adult sized clothing. I don't think I truly stopped growing until I was 18.

MeOldBamboo · 17/04/2019 21:06

Yep, periods started at 13 (5’5”) stopped growing at 15 (5’7”). Probably shrinking now Grin

Mistlewoeandwhine · 17/04/2019 21:09

Not true for me. When I was 16, I was 4’10 and now I’m 5’1. I started my period aged 14.

ScrambledSmegs · 17/04/2019 21:09

No. I was pretty much the shortest in my year, had first period in my early teens and continued growing slowly but steadily all the way till 18/19. Thank goodness! I've ended up not particularly tall, only 5'5" but not as short as my childhood size would suggest.

Ihatehashtags · 17/04/2019 21:11

No not true for me. Started at 12, kept growing until roughly 17.

VerbenaGirl · 17/04/2019 21:12

True for my DD1 - she’s not happy! Her sister is 2.5 years younger and already taller. Waiting to see if same will apply for her.

DrVonPatak · 17/04/2019 21:14

Got mine at 12 flat, didn't stop growing till 19. I'd say it's rubbish.

speakout · 17/04/2019 21:16

No, not for my DD, she grew for 5 years after starting periods
13 and grew up till 17/18.

KataraJean · 17/04/2019 21:17

DD1 is despairing as she thinks she has stopped growing. She started hers four years ago and has not grown any more in two years. She would very much like a late growth spurt as it looks like she will be the smallest of her siblings.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/04/2019 21:17

True for me. Periods at almost 13. Stopped growing when I was 14.

exexpat · 17/04/2019 21:18

Pretty much true for me and DD (both were tall for age until started periods at 11 and then stopped growing within a year or so).

speakout · 17/04/2019 21:18

Where did you get that information OP?

Malnourishment was widespread in the past, so perhaps it was true at one point- but we are much better fed nowadays to plenty energy to menstruate anf grow!

ScrambledSmegs · 17/04/2019 21:18

DD1 is already a tall child at 9 and not likely to hit puberty early either according to drs so goodness knows how tall she's going to get. Definitely taller than her little old mum, that's for sure.

tinydancer88 · 17/04/2019 21:18

True for me. Started just before 13, and I doubt I grew more than an inch after that.

Ludoole · 17/04/2019 21:18

Mine started at 9. I grew til I was 15.

Passthecake30 · 17/04/2019 21:19

Nope. Started at 13, when I was 5ft5 and finished growing when I reached 6ft around 18-19.

PumpkinPie2016 · 17/04/2019 21:19

True for me - mine started when I was 12 and looking back at myself when I was 14, I didn't grow after that. I remained the pint sized 5ft 2in I was (and still am!).

It wasn't true for my sister though - she started around the same age but definitely grew until she was around 17/18.

RavenousBabyButterfly · 17/04/2019 21:19

Not true for my DD.

SCST01 · 17/04/2019 21:20

I think it's to do with the pituitary gland. I was tallest at primary but seemed to stop about age 13,which was also when my periods started. I suspect because I was a taller child I ran out of growth hormone. I think this because a friend had a tall child who was given medication to slow her growth down in order to avoid her being a tall adult.

I imagine, like menopause, it is different for everyone.

AndromedaPerseus · 17/04/2019 21:25

Looking at it from a majority population point of view that is the case as menarche triggers the fusing of the long bones which after about 2 years will stop growth. There will always be the very small number of exceptions to this which will be the people on here saying it didn’t happen to them

TheBigFatMermaid · 17/04/2019 21:26

My DD started her periods in October of last year. She is 13 and already three inches taller than me. She needs to stop growing now.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 17/04/2019 21:28

I would agree with this as generally the earlier you start puberty the shorter you end up being. This contributes to the reason men usually end up taller than women as they start puberty later therefore are taller when they hit the growth spurt.
