To want to buy a second washing basket?

I have just removed freshly-washed pillowcases from my washing machine and put them in the same basket as the dirty washing came out of previously (think underpants, socks, etc). How vile!!! Envy.

I should have two washing baskets, shouldn't I?!

Farmers - I haven't read this as talking about the laundry hamper

We have laundry hampers in each bedroom for the dirty stuff to be stored in and a plastic one to transport dirty washing to the washine machine and tumble drier. Clean washing is then put back in the same plastic basket to take back upstairs

justasking111 · 17/04/2019 12:44

Wow I have four laundry baskets, they fit inside each other.

Rainatnight · 17/04/2019 12:45

I have a few but for logistical rather than hygiene reasons.

timeisnotaline · 17/04/2019 12:46

I should hope the nhs has fairly high hygiene standards. The likelihood of superbugs running rampant in my house or my house suddenly being fully populated with immuno compromised people is extremely low. If we have a bout of gastro all the bedding and pjs etc gets a full hot wash.

QuestionableMouse · 17/04/2019 12:47

We use IKEA bags too. You get loads in but they can be folded to store flat.

pisspawpatrol · 17/04/2019 12:47

We have a laundry bag upstairs where all dirty clothes go at the end of wearing them and a linen bag for towels and bedding. After washing I use one of those plastic folding crates as a wash basket to carry clothes to the line. It folds neatly enough to slide down the side of the washing machine when it's not being used.

KaterinaPetrova · 17/04/2019 12:50

I have two. A laundry basket that's tall and a washing basket that's short with handle holes for being carried around. Dirty goes in the tall laundry basket and the short one is used for transferring washing from the washer to dryer or outside to the line and back again.

EngagedAgain · 17/04/2019 12:52

The plastic basket I use never gets dirty and I never clean it. If something had got something in particular on it say mud on a walk, I would either spot wash or leave on the floor til next wash (so not a complete slovern?) Also I'm pretty sure years ago I used to only wash on a cold wash, may have been a problem with machine, and I put it all in together. Was much healthier then, but younger obviously. However, I have for a long time now separated the wash. That does now make me feel a bit icky thinking about tea towels and underwear together.

sleepwhenidie · 17/04/2019 12:54

I’m another person with multiple baskets but not for anything to do with hygiene! Clothes would be wrecked if repeatedly washed at 60 Shock. Also v bad for the environment. I wash everything at 30 degrees accept towels and bed linen (40!) that’s the point of using bio washing liquid/powder. Stuff that’s been in hospital is different. I really think you are imagining a problem that doesn’t exist!

HappilyHarridan · 17/04/2019 13:08

I use the same basket for everything, it’s fine, have never gotten ill from it. I also wash knickers with everything. That’s also fine, because the washing machine makes everything clean. No need to follow hospital guidelines at home unless there is a serious infection that needs dealing with or you are planning to do surgery.

ToffeePennie · 17/04/2019 13:12

I actually have three laundry baskets.
One for dirty laundry.
One for our clean laundry.
One for the kids clean laundry.

supadupapupascupa · 17/04/2019 13:14

Clean clothes go in the basket to be put away, then dirty clothes/old pots/toys/anything that belongs downstairs goes back into it to take downstairs. Washing goes in the machine, everything else to it's home. My baskets are workhorses. I believe in a bit of germage doing you good. I have NEVER in my life known people keep baskets separate.

e1y1 · 17/04/2019 13:16

I have a dishwasher, but still use pot towels and clothes of course for small bits of washing up and cleaning.

The thought of underwear that has been sat nicely tucked in bumcracks, ballsacks and fanjos, swirling around with them on a 40 wash (which is only 3 degrees above body temperature so the perfect hosting ground for said bacteria) is more than I can bear to think about.

Yuck.

PCohle · 17/04/2019 13:22

Why are you so repulsed by your own underwear? Don't you wash them with your other clothes which omg you pull on over your face?

Do you actually know of anyone ever who has become ill from using a dish towel washed with pants?

tmi alert
Where does the spunk rag go?!

That'll be an anti-bac wipe.

Hecateh · 17/04/2019 13:31

My washing machine and tumble dryer are in my dressing room. Clothes go straight in the washer, from the washer to the dryer and then hung up to air before going back in the wardrobe. Sorted LOL.

BrutusMcDogface · 17/04/2019 13:33

Seriously? I use an assortment of baskets for both clean and dirty laundry and none of us have died yet (plus we have strong immune systems-touch wood- related, I wonder?!)

Bluntness100 · 17/04/2019 13:37

Why wouldn't you put underwear in with tea towels. It all comes out clean in the end? How dirty are your underpants for God's sake? 😱

Mumminmum · 17/04/2019 13:37

just wipe the basket with a clean, moist kitchen cloth. It is not that difficult. No reason to use a lot of plastic or chemicals.

pelirocco123 · 17/04/2019 13:40

Apprently the rule in our house is dirty on the floor , clean on the dining table

or is it the other way round?

Squigglesworth · 17/04/2019 13:41

I keep one basket just for clean clothes and sleep just fine at night. The baskets last for years (and years and years-- don't think I've thrown one out, yet, and I set up my own home in 2001), and there are lots of other wasteful things that I don't do.

Would it kill us to use a "dirty" basket for clean clothes? No, but I think it's gross, so why not keep one "clean"?

RobertSmithdoesmyhair · 17/04/2019 13:41

Is this a serious thread? How will kids build up any immunity if we are that contrling about family germs?! Jeez....

Topseyt · 17/04/2019 13:42

I wash underwear, tea towels, bed linen and everything else all in the same load. Why wouldn't I? All of my family still survive.

What bollocks.

mrsm43s · 17/04/2019 13:44

I have two baskets and one hamper.

Dirty clothes go in hamper.

When I'm doing the washing I sort from the hamper into lights and darks. Put one basket load into the machine - wash, take out, put back in basket. Put other basket load into the machine to wash. Take 1st load out in the 1st basket to the washing line or upstairs to the airer. Repeat with second load in 2nd basket.

I do "dark", "light" and very rare "delicate/wool" washes. Dark pants go in the dark wash, light pants go in the light wash, and delicate pants (not that I really have any) go in the delicates wash. Likewise teatowels/cloths, towels and bedding go in with the appropriate colour. All washing at 40deg. No one in the family has had an upset tummy/sickness bug for at least 5 years, possibly longer. I think our hygiene is OK.

You are aware that if you do the oral sex your face is right by these bodily emissions? Hmm
