To wash everyday?

Brodiebirdy · 16/04/2019 13:17

I currently wash my hair every other day and on the days in between I just have a quick wash in the shower (I’m only in there for about 2 mins). I’m staying with my sister for the week and she says it’s a lot of water to use and that you don’t really need to wash every day- she says that every other day is fine. I just wondered if other people thought that washing everyday is too much? Thanks

What about after exercise and sex? Does she not 'do' those?

Well I am in the tiny minority of those who don’t have a shower in my house!

So that’s a good reason to have a strip wash when I don’t have time to bathe in the morning, or I’ve bathed the night before and just want freshen up.

I know it’s weird but I just don’t feel like ‘I can’t live without a shower’.

prettybird · 16/04/2019 15:01

I shower or bath every second day, unless I have been for a run or exercised in which case I will shower/bath afterwards. (Baths depend on whether I have the time to chill out and/or whether dh is also wanting a bath; I also like to put Epsom Salts in the bath plus some essential oils as it is a good way for the skin to absorb magnesium)

I wash my hair about twice a week - needs to be done in the shower as my hair is very thick and my scalp reacts if I don't rinse it really well Sad

If I want/need to, I can hop into and out of the shower in less than a minute: it takes longer for the hot water to come through from the tank upstairs Grin But usually I am a wee bit longer (especially if I'm washing my hair).

Ds (18) on the other hand, takes forever in the shower Shock at least 15 minutes : we don't have a clue what he does in his daily ablutions that take him so long Hmm

I don't think your sister is unreasonable in not having a shower every day but she is being unreasonable in judging you for doing so Confused

englishdictionary · 16/04/2019 15:09

I have an auntie who does that strip wash thing. She starts at the top and works her way down so she is doing bottom parts last. What she doesn't do is wash the face cloth afterwards Envy < most certainly not envy - she starts at all again the next day under the utterly bizarre illusion that she is washing in the correct order so as not to 'contaminate'

AdvancedAvoider · 16/04/2019 15:09

I don't shower everyday and I can assure you I don't smell. My husband does shower daily because he's a sweaty sod.

anonymousbird · 16/04/2019 15:10

Oh God, the strip washers are out! Grin

You just have to have a soapy rummage under your pyjamas Shock Shock - yuk!

Beamur · 16/04/2019 15:13

We're a household of unapologetic mingers (according to the clean freaks) I will shower every other day (unless I've been to the gym or it's hot and I'm sweaty) and I don't feel dirty in-between. DH hates the feeling of water on his skin, but showers after exercise. DD is similar, she'll happily leave it a couple of days between showers.
I just could not be bothered to do it twice a day. For those of you who say it's just a couple of quid on your water bill, no big deal, there is an environmental cost too. In dry summers that's a lot of water to use up, energy is needed to heat the water/wash towels/make shampoos etc, plus the leccy used if you're drying your hair every day. It is better for the environment to shower less often.

MadeleineMaxwell · 16/04/2019 15:14

Funny, isn't it, how we're all so conditioned to shower at least once a day, using masses of chemicals on our skin and hair, when it's apparently not necessary at all and even potentially harmful according to this article.

Personally, I don't care how much or little someone washes as long as they're not offensively stinky. I'm an every other day person myself, dry curly hair once a week. But I work from home so don't offend anyone else Grin

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 16/04/2019 15:15

Someone washing once or twice every day isn't necessarily a wasteful, fuck the environment clean freak. No issue.

Someone washing every other day or whatever isn't necessarily minging,a tramp etc. No issue.

The issues start when others impose their world views on others and start calling them names for doing things differently.

Myheartbelongsto · 16/04/2019 15:15

How anyone could not wash every day is beyond me.

Just rank!

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/04/2019 15:18

Wash everyday, though not necessarily shower every day.

A wash takes very little water.

Lweji · 16/04/2019 15:21

A wash takes very little water.

Which also makes it hardly a "wash". Particularly if people use flannels.

We are not astronauts in the ISS.

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 16/04/2019 15:23

I think it's important to wash daily if you work in a shared office, with clients or the public, or in any job where you interact with others indoors, as nobody wants to sit next to a smelly colleague! Most people I know have a quick shower before work.

I can't imagine going to work without a shower! I don't sweat much but nobody smells fresh without washing under running water, even if they think they do. One of my colleagues says she baths at night, she always smells a bit musty by noon.

Sorry but this is just bollocks. Unless someone has some kind of issue which means that they sweat excessively and then it gets unusually smelly, or it's absolutely boiling hot, there is just no way you can smell someone just because they haven't had a shower that morning. Someone who has showered the night before is not going to smell so 'musty' Hmm the next day that someone else can smell it. Total bullshit.

People who actually smell, smell because they shower far less than once every other day, they are not using any sort of deodorant and more likely because they are not washing their clothes.

I have worked with some right smelly bastards in my time. I used to work with a guy who stank so bad that even when he wasn't in, if you went to his desk your nostrils filled with proper oniony BO. I highly doubt that was because he was washing every other day rather than every day.

SerenDippitty · 16/04/2019 15:23

I don't use a flannel when I strip wash I use my hands like I would in the shower.

anonforthespies43267 · 16/04/2019 15:24

I shower twice a day most days! Like to feel clean before bed & freshen up in the morning!

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 16/04/2019 15:25

I can't imagine trying to wash my bits and pits at the sink - doesn't water go all over the floor? Why not just jump in the shower? Obviously I'm not talkinh about people with disabilities or people who have had surgery and can't shower for a certain amount of time (been there!)

letsdolunch321 · 16/04/2019 15:27

Yuk !!!!

How can you go out without showering your bits and pieces.

Hell ........... NO, NO, NO

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 16/04/2019 15:29

How can you go out without showering your bits and pieces.

OMG Shock what do you think is going to happen?! Grin

Snowdropheaven · 16/04/2019 15:30

Jeez, tell her to worry about something more important. I shower and bath everyday....two washes, she'll think I'm the devil in disguise!

redbedheadd · 16/04/2019 15:31

For those who strip wash... is that just your face/neck and underarms? Not feet and crotch area? I think it's easier just to jump in a 2 min shower surely? - I've got a newborn baby so quick showers are all I do but I can still have a good wash.

Your sister sounds weird.

OneDayillSleep · 16/04/2019 15:34

Shower at least once a day, wash my hair twice a week max, usually only once if I'm honest.

I have to have a body shower at least once a day though, I have 2 if I've been exercising or it's been a hot/stressful day. They are v quick body showers 2min type thing too.

I'd find it a bit gross someone not showering everyday. Surely filling the sink to wash yourself (I assume your sister does this instead) won't use much less water than jumping in the shower for 2min?

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 16/04/2019 15:35

I shower at least once a day, only wash my hair twice a week but it's because it's super long at the moment, waist length (thanks pregnancy, only real positive -other than the baby of course) so I'm wearing it straight and it takes ages to dry and straighten, when it's short and I wear it curly I wash it daily to get the product out. I'm more than two minutes in the shower too!

resultswithintwoweeks · 16/04/2019 15:37

One reporter for The Atlantic quit showering, and though at first his body smelled like a barnyard sex party, after a while, he just started smelling, well, neutral

www.elitedaily.com/wellness/showering-every-day-bad/1845841

Hmmm! I don't know. Sounds more like he got used to the smell? Like we can't smell our favourite perfumes any more?

greenelephantscarf · 16/04/2019 15:42

I can't imagine trying to wash my bits and pits at the sink - doesn't water go all over the floor?

not if you are using a flannel/cloth.
I put on a lather of soap on pit/bits/crevices/feet and then wash that off with a damp flannel.
there is less water on the floor than getting out of the shower.

Springwalk · 16/04/2019 15:43

Most adults shower once a day. Your sister sounds like a terrible host. I like my house guests to feel comfortable and cared for, and as part of that they shower when they want to, eat whenever they feel like it and make themselves thoroughly at home. Give her some money for the water bill and show her this thread.
