To wash everyday?

I currently wash my hair every other day and on the days in between I just have a quick wash in the shower (I’m only in there for about 2 mins). I’m staying with my sister for the week and she says it’s a lot of water to use and that you don’t really need to wash every day- she says that every other day is fine. I just wondered if other people thought that washing everyday is too much? Thanks

I think the “norm”, certainly in our culture, is a daily shower. Although plenty of us skip the odd day without it doing any harm. Either way I certainly wouldn’t comment on a guest’s washing habits..

howmanyusernames · 16/04/2019 14:09

I shower every day, and wash my hair every 2-3 days. I sweat a lot, even in winter, so if I don't shower I smell (not of BO but that 'I've sweat in my tshirt armpit' smell).
If I don't shower I feel greasy/dirty and tired, I find it wakes me up. I only shower for a few mins.

My IL's come and stay and won't shower for 2 days, which I find odd but they don't smell so whatever.

A friend of mine says she'll spend 45 min (!!!!!) in the shower washing her hair!!!! Confused

ElspethFlashman · 16/04/2019 14:12

I wash every day but only in the sink with a flannel. Otherwise its a bath or shower every other day

These threads are always full of competitive speed showerers.

"I only spend 5 mins in the shower!"
"Well I only spend 2 mins in mine!"
"2 minutes! You realise you only need 30 seconds?!"
"Well actually I just turn on the water, step in and immediately step out again"

IAmAPersonToo · 16/04/2019 14:15

I shower every other day and don’t wash in between (only splash my face to wake up).

I’m not sweaty at all and never smell....so why would that be disgusting? People are saying it is but why? What has magically happened to my skin that means I ‘should’ wash it off again in 24 hours?

SerenDippitty · 16/04/2019 14:15

I do shower most days but it takes me longer than 30 seconds and I don't think it's necessarily minging to strip wash instead.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 16/04/2019 14:16

There is nothing wrong with showering once every two days (as long as you aren't grubby)

  • it's better for the environment, your hair, and saves time.

But you do you!

SeriouslyStrongCheese · 16/04/2019 14:17

Wtf is a strip wash Confused

BobBobBobbingAlong · 16/04/2019 14:17

Most people (stinky teens and gym folk aside) don't need to shower everyday but I think it's a fairly normal thing to do. Unless she's got a septic tank or struggles to pay water/heating bills it's an odd thing to comment on.

I say this as someone who doesn't shower every day as I find it dries my skin out too much. I strip was half the time instead. It gets my armpits and other potentially stinky bits just as clean as a shower and is not grim in any way. If you think it's grim maybe you don't know how to do it properly? It's also far better for the planet as it uses far less water/soap/heat. That's not my motivation but it's an upside.

kaytee87 · 16/04/2019 14:19

Op I do the same as you. It's not excessive at all. 15 minute shower with hair wash every second day, the days in between a 5 minute 'body' shower, once a week I'll have a longer shower/bath where I use a face & hair mask, exfoliate and shave.

ElspethFlashman · 16/04/2019 14:20

Strip wash = bits 'n pits.

Except you don't need to strip to do it, which is a huge appeal for me on a freezing cold morning. You just have to have a soapy rummage under your pyjamas.

BobBobBobbingAlong · 16/04/2019 14:22

Seriously, a strip wash is where you fill a basin with warm soapy water and use flannel or similar to wash armpits, underboobs, any other creases/crevices, groin etc. I use one small basin of warm soapy water to wash and another to rinse. I stand on a bathmat.

It's very useful for times such as camping, when your water is off and you are reliant on a kettle to boil bottled water, when you've had surgery and can't bathe your whole body, or for any additional armpit washing in the summer.

It's also planet and skin friendly. It's very common where water is in short supply.

englishdictionary · 16/04/2019 14:23

I never understand the 'it's a waste of water' you are not wasting to, you at using it. Wasting it would be running the shower and not washing. It's perfectly acceptable to shower everyday if you please.

MaxNormal · 16/04/2019 14:25

I know people say they don't have to shower daily as they're not sweaty, but that's not the only issue. What about your bits and bumhole? You're weeing and pooing out of there, and having discharge. Leaving it for 48 hours seems a bit grim.

DappledThings · 16/04/2019 14:25

Honestly I can't see how strip washing is easier than jumping in the shower for 30 seconds

Of course it's easier. The actual washing bit is quicker and the drying is much quicker and easier than drying your whole body.

I'm a shower and hair wash every other day, strip wash on the other days person. Shower every evening on holiday but that's just because of how matted and horrible my hair gets in the pool or sea

notharryssally · 16/04/2019 14:28

I think YANBU to shower every day and she is NBU to shower every other day. However, she is BU to think you're going to use a lot of water doing that.

OneStepSideways · 16/04/2019 14:29

I think it's important to wash daily if you work in a shared office, with clients or the public, or in any job where you interact with others indoors, as nobody wants to sit next to a smelly colleague! Most people I know have a quick shower before work.

I can't imagine going to work without a shower! I don't sweat much but nobody smells fresh without washing under running water, even if they think they do. One of my colleagues says she baths at night, she always smells a bit musty by noon.

greenpop21 · 16/04/2019 14:29

I shower daily but only 2 mins apart from when hair washing 3 times a week.

greenpop21 · 16/04/2019 14:30

What about after exercise and sex? Does she not 'do' those?

englishdictionary · 16/04/2019 14:30

Max

Indeed. Sometimes I think I am abnormal because I really like to wash these areas daily Grin

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 14:31

Not washing every day is gross, i wouldn't feel at all clean if I didn't.

VladmirsPoutine · 16/04/2019 14:33

I can't understand why some people think a daily shower is unnecessary. It's frankly disgusting how casual some people treat basic hygiene. Showering every day is the minimum.

MancaroniCheese · 16/04/2019 14:35

YANBU. I don't get how a strip wash is quicker and easier than standing under a shower and soaping everywhere.

Babdoc · 16/04/2019 14:35

Well this thread finally explains all those smelly people I unfortunately find sitting next to me on the bus/sharing a checkout queue....!
Please wash daily. It’s actually difficult to smell your own smell, your nose acclimatises to it. But others will. (Rather like smokers never knew they stank until they stop.) I’m autistic, so my senses (including smell) are hyper acute. It’s not a blessing.

OneStepSideways · 16/04/2019 14:36

I don't understand strip washing, how do you rinse off the soap? Doesn't the wet flannel just spread the sweat/dirt/dead skin cells around rather than cleaning your skin?

There have been a few occasions when I've freshened up with baby wipes instead of showering: camping holidays, when I was in hospital, and when travelling.

sara2019 · 16/04/2019 14:36

I shower or bath everyday because that’s my preference my mum however showers a few times a week and for the other days it’s ‘the 3 f’s!’ Face, feet and fanny Smile
