To ask what weird/stupid stuff you did as a kid

I think I was a bit of a strange child although maybe I’m not the only one.

One of my favourite things to do aged about 5/6 was to steal a bar of soap and some scissors, find a corner to hide in and shave wafer thin slices of soap off until there was nothing but a big pile of soap flakes. I got into trouble every time but it didn’t stop me.

Our family car had two rear facing seats at the back and if I was sitting there I used sit dead still and make blank-faced unblinking eye contact with the people behind for as long as possible. I think I managed it for about an hour once.

Once aged about 10 I set out to drink as much water as possible just to see how much I could drink. I managed a few litres (I’m aware now that I could have killed myself)

I brought a large dehydrated dead fish I’d found on the beach to show and tell at school when I was 7. Unfortunately it was the last day before the summer holidays and I accidentally left it behind. I think they had to get someone to come in in the end to deal with the terrible smell.

When I was 12 I coloured my entire face in with bright pink lipstick. It took about two days to get rid of completely.

Was anyone else a little weirdo? I think I’m pretty normal now btw!

I also use to bite rubber things, I once ate all the buttons off the remote control and got an absolute bollocking.

I used to be absolutely obsessed with wearing shoes without socks, because I liked the feel of it; I'd buckle my Mary Janes on to my bare feet in bed, or my plimsolls, or "scrapers" (Velcro trainers). I was delighted at school when we were told to wear shoes on our bare feet to walk from the classroom to the assembly hall for PE.

I'd make "water biscuit spread": from chewed up biscuit, which I would then spread on another biscuit.

I used to eat Garibaldi biscuits so I had "fillings" like my friends.

Used to nibble the corners of newspapers and tissues. I still like to nibble tissues.

Melt wax in a teaspoon over a candle, drip it onto my arm and pick the cold wax off.

Use a sewing needle through the tips of my fingers.

Grow any type of seed, pip or stone, even growing the pigeons hemp because I'd heard hemp was cannabis.

When I had a full on cold I would blow my nose without tissue and as it flowed out of my nose I would suck it into my mouth and spit it out.

I would chase my sister around the garden holding a bunch of nettles screaming "come and smell my iceberg roses".

I am crying with laughter at these, also realising that I was too an odd child.
Used to bite my wooden bed because it felt nice too.
Every Easter, me & my brother played schools with our Easter eggs. The size of the egg denoted the age of the child. We'd play for hours.
When we went to the big park st the weekend, I used to ride my imaginary horse! I now feel for my parents having to keep a straight face whilst walking with me.
Good to know we are all a bit odd!

My parents were very laid back and weren't bothered to be honest.
So as a child I had lots of freedom to spend all day out in the woods.
Used to make dens, light fires and look for birds nests.
All of this before I was 12!
I still looked for nests when I was older, but only to make a list and map of where they were.
Then I would check on them (from a distance), to make sure they were OK.
The 70s and early 80s were great for being outdoors.
As an adult, I have found the joys of wild camping, so I still get to do stuff that I used to enjoy as a child.

Dropped a few paces behind my mum and walked as if I had a disabled leg

This made me chuckle Grin

Last year DD kept limping and I kept asking her what was wrong with her leg. It was several weeks before she told me she wanted to walk like her headteacher (who actually has a limp!)

When I was 2 or 3 I developed an obsession with the idea of pulling carrots out of the ground. I pulled up most of the back garden in case any of it was carrots. It wasn’t.

I was also convinced that if I practised enough then I could move things with my mind. I think I almost have myself a migraine once trying to move a knife from the side into the sink. I used to be so determined to do this, I’d zone out in lessons, when in the car etc

I feel so much better about being weird after having read what everyone else had written and realising none of the things I did were strange at all, from the soap grinding, to eating milk teeth toothpaste, to pretending I had imaginary pets.

Some things I also used to do were sledging down the stairs in cardboard boxes, "ice skating" in white socks and a tutu on a tiled floor until I fell over and really hurt myself (which put me off) and sitting on a huge poster of the constellations, on my blanket and pretending that blankey was a magic carpet and I was flying through the stars!

Eat grass (delicious)

When in the bath I used to suck the flannel (delicious)

And the last one (do NOT try this at home) I used to be able to make myself faint. Honestly dangerous! Could do it now if I wanted. I practised and practised. I was a daft child.

When my cousin were I were about 11 we would put boys clothes on teddy bears and dance around with them and pretend they were out boyfriends.

I made a woodlice circus.

I used to like to suck the flannel when I was in the bath...that dirty soapy water was delicious.

I once got caught sucking my cats tail Grin

I threw my dinner behind my bed and pretended that I'd eaten it all.

God I was weird !

Oh and now I remember a great game me and my friend used to play which was getting all the way round a room by climbing across the furniture because you weren't allowed to touch the floor - I remember getting stuck on the top of small(ish) wooden wardrobes a couple of times!

And we used to put all the liquids we could think of through the sodastream (don’t try milk, it explodes

Dropped a few paces behind my mum and walked as if I had a disabled leg. Fuck only knows what that was about.

Oh my God howling!!!! I almost went myself!!!

I'm texting my mum now because I dont know....but I'm pretty weird as an adult so I was probably weird as a kid.....cant wait for her reply with what a delight I was

Thought of another! I went through a stage of wanting to sleep in a manger like baby Jesus, so when my parents came to tuck me in, I’d be curled up on my pillow rather than in the actual bed.

I also used to close my eyes and see if I could find my way home when walking

I used to mix things together, like different shampoos and conditioners in the same bottle. Also mixed sugar and coffee together in a massive jar. Funnily enough I couldn't mix food on my dinner plate.

When peeling potatoes I would cut them into hedgehog shapes and would make whole families.

Would also eat paper (that seems quite normal on here lol)

Also had to count everything, like counting the steps I walk etc (still find myself doing that now Blush)

I kept wondering what it was like to be locked in a cage, envying characters in books or films who ended up imprisoned, such as Hansel, Pinocchio, Mr Twit's monkeys. I never got the chance to experience this - the nearest I got was sitting in an empty chicken coop at someone else's house, but nobody actually locked me in. Sad As an adult, I have resisted the temptation to get myself arrested! Wink

Oh and would make rose perfume. My DF used to grow roses. I would collect petals and mash them up with water and put in little bottles and make everyone put it on like perfume. It stunk.

Honestly so many!

One thing I enjoyed was sleeping on the floor. I loved the feeling of being on the floor knowing I had a lovely soft bed to get back into should the fancy take me.

My kids don’t really do any strange things that I can think of though!! What’s WRONG with them?

After bathing i would "ride the wave" and slip back and forth, my mum would shout up asking if i had slipped, I was covered in bruises 🙈

I use to stick needles through my palm and finger tips, or paint my hands with PVA glue.

I can make myself go cross eyed and keep it up for ages, When my mum used to introduce me i would be standing there cross eyed, and flinch dramatically when she would tell me to stop 😂

My poor parents, thinking back now i was a right little dickhead.

My sister and I had short bobbed hair, we used to put a pair of black tights on our heads to make it out like we had long hair. We used to tie it up with a scrunchie, and walk about outside with it 😬
Also for about three years I referred to myself as Linda and encouraged others to call me that (my name is not Linda).

@hideandgoseek I'm sure your kids do try weird stuff - just when you're not looking! I did the sleeping on the floor too, although I never once made it through the night. Did you?

After I'd read stories about kidnapping, I used to ask my brother to tie me up. He was reluctant, but instructed by me, he did tie my hands behind me with a scarf.

Oh yes, I was always making myself cross eyed. What with that and making myself faint, my Mum had her work cut out Grin

Oh, and me and my DB used to give ourselves the most awful Chinese Burns. (Two fingers, lick them and whack each other on the inside of the arm) Our arms used to be really sore, why just why....

I used to find pebbles in the street and swallow them. Honestly must have swallowed hundreds of them.

Rolled up some paper, set fire to it then smoked it. Jesus.

When the council cut the field at the side of our house we would gather up the cuttings and make a maze with it in the road. It would take us hours and all the kids got involved and we just had a brilliant time with it.
