Narwhals

AIBU for only realising, at the age of 39, that narwhals actually exist on the planet instead of being some mythical creature from the pages of Tolkien or similar? I swear I have spent the last 20 years or so arguing with people about how they can be bracketed with unicorns and gryphons Blush

I have a narwhal mug, I love it so much. Then I cracked it so it is no longer suitable for tea, so now it houses my toothbrush!

The Britannia in Edinburgh has a real Narwhal tusk on the wall of the dining room that allegedly The Duke of Edinburgh picked up off a beach many many years ago...it is really incredible and so big!

@notmerryberry Where I grew up we used to set a lot of black squirrels. I thought red squirrels were young, then as they got old their fur turned black, and when they were really old it turned grey.

I was in my late teens when I realised they are 3 different types of squirrels...

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 12/04/2019 23:40

There are red squirrels in Northumberland. I have seen them

Singlebutmarried · 12/04/2019 23:41

I so excited that I’m going swimming with manatees soon - they’re also mythical as sailors thought they were mermaids

littlebillie · 12/04/2019 23:44

I've held a tusk they are incredibly heavy

ememem84 · 13/04/2019 06:58

I live in jersey. We only have red squirrels here.

Dieu · 13/04/2019 07:01

I saw them on a nature programme, and to be fair to you OP, it STILL felt like I was watching something mythical!

PseuDenim · 13/04/2019 08:27

I feel so glad that I am not alone in this. Also to the poster who asked why I’d been arguing for 20 years about the existence of narwhals, I have done a few other bits and bobs in between times. Only a few mins.

*mind

Also, because I am hungover and reflective, why isn’t it narwhales?

DS12 used to watch the Octonauts as a small child and thus began my knowledge! Never heard of a narwhal before then!

brizzlemint · 14/04/2019 08:00

It's narwhal because it comes from a Danish word, it lives in the Arctic around Greenland so I suspect that's why it comes from a Danish word.
