Narwhals

AIBU for only realising, at the age of 39, that narwhals actually exist on the planet instead of being some mythical creature from the pages of Tolkien or similar? I swear I have spent the last 20 years or so arguing with people about how they can be bracketed with unicorns and gryphons Blush

ahem

brizzlemint · 12/04/2019 22:01

Monkey Angry I knew it would be that song and I was still stupid enough to click on it Grin

fuzzyduck1 · 12/04/2019 22:05

Some Narwhals grow 2 horns at once

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 12/04/2019 22:05

brizzlemint

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 12/04/2019 22:10

Narwhals
Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 12/04/2019 22:12

Ds used to sing a song about narwhals when he was small. MY dsis asked what he was singing, which I axplained. She thought they were mythical - I had to google and show her!

kaytee87 · 12/04/2019 22:14

I'm amazed that you've spent 20 years having arguments with people about an animal I've never discussed once with anyone. I don't think I've ever even said 'narwhal' out loud.

Good0mens · 12/04/2019 22:15

Oh which David Attenborough has narwhals in please?

Amanduh · 12/04/2019 22:15

To be fair, I know at least 2 people that thought the same with unicorns. Then again they also think Keith Lemon is a real person so...

Newadventure · 12/04/2019 22:21

I'm not sure how true this is, I just heard it ages ago and it's always stuck with me..

Narwhal horns are where the myth of unicorns came from. One's that had broken off in battle during fights etc were found washed up on beaches. Obvs people back then didn't know about narwhals so made up their own story from where they must have come from Smile

Newadventure · 12/04/2019 22:27

Queen Elizabeth the 1st was given a carved, jeweled one as gift too.
Look up The Horn of Windsor

Siameasy · 12/04/2019 22:28

They seem to have a bit of a high profile all of a sudden
Probably due to the interest in unicorns and mermaids
What about walri? When will they have their moment 😂

switswoo81 · 12/04/2019 22:29

@factsoflife
Oh no I thought it was brilliant how they knew it. They were so proud they knew more than teacher!

Greeborising · 12/04/2019 22:30

Raw prawns are grey
Just saying

GetOffTheRoof · 12/04/2019 22:32

Did no one see Why The Whales Came in the 80s or 90s? Is a film set in the Scillies, based on the book by Michael Morpurgo called When The Whales Came. Lovely book, highly recommend it.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 12/04/2019 22:34

@Newadventure I heard similar about dragons. When travellers brought in remains of crocodiles and alligators, no one else have seen them before and the travellers made a tale of hunting it bit... More interesting... Hence the legend of dragons.

Also don't know if it's truth

littlebillie · 12/04/2019 22:35

It's like seeing a duck billed platypus they defy imagination

notmaryberry · 12/04/2019 22:42

I think red squirrels are mythical - I keep going to places famous for their red squirrels and I've never seen one! They're definitely made up!

SrSteveOskowski · 12/04/2019 22:42

My SIL thought seahorses were fictional. She didn't believe they were real until she went to an aquarium on holidays. She's 44! Grin

Purpleartichoke · 12/04/2019 22:44

I first learned about narwhals from the movie Elf. I thought it made them up. Then I saw the Octonauts with Dd and learned they were real.

polarpig · 12/04/2019 23:00

I can understand that people think seahorses are mythical - a male prepared to look after the new babies en masse! I think not Grin

notmaryberry go to Formby or Brownsea Island for red squirrels, or the Isles of Scilly.

Has nobody seen polar pigs?

Osquito · 12/04/2019 23:02

YANBU: they are probably my favourite wild animal and I have had to (several times) show friends clips on YouTube to prove they exist.

helpconfused · 12/04/2019 23:03

I'd never heard of them before last year when my 3 year old was telling me facts about them and I had to Google it!!

Pumperthepumper · 12/04/2019 23:05

It’s not a horn it’s a TUSK

Pumperthepumper · 12/04/2019 23:05
