When you got married? (If you're married!)

I was reading a BBC article about a woman talking about the judgement and negativity she encountered when she announced her engagement aged 22.

I was 32 when I married DH. We were together for 3 years, got engaged then lived together for another 4 years before having our wedding. I wanted to be as sure as I could be and felt no rush.

Is there a general judgement with feminist overtones about getting married so young? Are they doomed to divorce?

WeTookVows · 12/04/2019 17:11

Married the week after my 21st birthday in 2009. We'd been together 2 years. I didn't want to live together without commitment and didn't feel frightened or tied down by the idea of marriage. As it happens we did move in to our house 4 months before the wedding. We are very happy together.

No negativity from friends or family (to our faces anyway!)

Together at 15, married at 27, baby at 28... we didn’t really see the point until kids were in our thoughts, really it was just to make us a unit with the same name 😂 bloody expensive way to do it I guess!

CammieKennaway · 12/04/2019 17:27

Married 3 weeks before I turned 30. He was 34. He left 2 weeks before my 40th, to go live with his secretary, after years of being unfaithful with a number of women. Don’t think it would have made any difference if we’d married 10 years earlier or later.

Lozz22 · 12/04/2019 17:32

Got engaged at 19 and get married at 23 as we had to graduate and buy a house first. We got lots of comments which isn't really a surprise but after all this time together we've proven to a lot of people that we are ready to get married

ahtellthee · 12/04/2019 18:55

I was 24. 16 years happily married.
(My mum and sister were also 24. My best friend just got married aged 40).

Purpleartichoke · 12/04/2019 18:57

My first marriage I was 25. It did not last.

In my peer group, I am only aware of one couple that wed before their late twenties that is still married.
