When you got married? (If you're married!)

I was reading a BBC article about a woman talking about the judgement and negativity she encountered when she announced her engagement aged 22.

I was 32 when I married DH. We were together for 3 years, got engaged then lived together for another 4 years before having our wedding. I wanted to be as sure as I could be and felt no rush.

Is there a general judgement with feminist overtones about getting married so young? Are they doomed to divorce?

Bloody hell, miracle. I hope he was prosecuted and you are safe from harm now. Flowers

SickOfThePig · 12/04/2019 10:48

I think anything under 30 would be considered young now. I've been to a lot of weddings on the last few years. All around the 30 age bracket.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 12/04/2019 10:50

27 but we had lived together since 23

ColdNovemberRain · 12/04/2019 10:50

Met at 19, engaged/moved in together at 23 and married at 27. We would have gotten married sooner but issues with family health, job redundancies etc kept taking precedence. I'm 41 now.

I remember thinking that 24 was the optimum age to get married but relatives and colleagues around that age now seem to react in horror to the thought - they all seem convinced that marriage is something done in your early 30s.

I was 27 we’ve will have been married 19 years on Monday.

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 12/04/2019 10:52

Got together at 22, married at 24. Married 11 years this summer.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 12/04/2019 10:53

I was 24, he was 27.

There were the few comments of 'you've grown up fast' / 'can't believe you're married already' but that was it.

I certainly worried about what other people thought (especially as we had only been together for 2 years).

But I certainly didn't get any negative comments, and although I worried that people might judge me, I never had any reason to believe that anyone did.

Witchend · 12/04/2019 10:53

I got married at 22. Don't remember any negativity from family or friends.

However I do remember my cousin having negativity marrying at the same age. She would (at the time) have said everyone was very negative. However from the outside he was so clearly a bad fit for her it was that that people were reacting to rather than her age. She's now very happily married to husband #2 and has been for over 15 years now. (first marriage lasted only just over a year)

LaPufalina · 12/04/2019 10:54

I was 38, had first DC at 37 and second at 39 so have had a busy last few years as I'm 40 now. I was engaged at 18 to get married after we graduated but his proposal was to try and control me (in hindsight) as we were at different universities and he didn't trust me to be faithful (turns out he had a point Blush). I dodged a bullet at 30 when an expected proposal didn't materialise (he'd asked my parents' permission in front of me Hmm). Very glad it all worked out this way in the end.

BiologyIsReal · 12/04/2019 11:03

Married at 22. Now a widow after 52 years of marriage. Best thing I ever did was to marry my late DH. And as a afterthought to comments up thread about feminism may be a factor in raising eyebrows against early marriage I was (am) a proud second wave feminist Smile

Ijustwanttoretire · 12/04/2019 11:04

kamikazeshady · 12/04/2019 11:06

We got together when I was 19. Married him at 26. Now going through a divorce at 27 :/ definitely will not be marrying again. Especially someone in the military.

florentina1 · 12/04/2019 11:07

A lot of the reason women marry later is to do with the better education they receive. At my Grammar school in the 60s, we were encouraged to do domestic and secretarial studies. For a lot of families Higher Education was thought to be a complete waste for girls. Obviously they would marry, have babies straight away and not work once they were mothers.

At many schools boys and girls went into split classes in their options year doing different subjects. Some boys in our year asked if they could do Cookery instead of metal work and were allowed to join the class. Girls who asked to Woodwork were ridiculed

SpoonOfPeanutButter · 12/04/2019 11:10

Met at 18.
Married at 25.
Just had our 2nd anniversary and our first baby is on the way :)

BloodyDisgrace · 12/04/2019 11:10

22 and 41

SickOfThePig · 12/04/2019 11:18

I agree with the education comment. I think that it's seen as a waste if you get a degree or whatever and then have settle down straight away. I was a mature student, nothing mad but a few years older. My mother presumed I wouldn't be having children because I would be concentrating on my career for a few years and by then it would be too late. We only got married because we wanted to do it before we had children.

WinterIsComing84 · 12/04/2019 11:18
  1. Just had my 9th anniversary. My parents were 18/24 when they married and will be celebrating their 40th in a few months.
