To think living this rurally would be creepy?

We went to see a plot of land today with the potential to build a house. Absolutely beautiful land BUT you can't see another house. It's a "no one would hear you scream scenario." We have young DC and DH often travels. We have always lived in urban areas. Would this be bizarre or do you get used to it?

That’s my next house! I’d love it. We currently only have a few neighbours and no streetlights, pretty rural. Lots of my town living friends think it’s too dark and quiet.

BlueMerchant · 06/04/2019 22:06

I wouldn't feel comfortable living in a remote location. It would make me anxious and on constant alert.

Taswama · 06/04/2019 22:06

Your young dc may not appreciate it in 10 years time (or less) when you have to ferry them around everywhere.
Dc1 has been on a school trip this week and got back later than planned. No problem, he just walked home as usual (secondary). If we’d moved to the village we looked at a few years ago, he would have missed the bus home and I would have had to pick him up.

CalmDownPacino · 06/04/2019 22:06

Is this even unusual confused

No. We all live rurally. Personal I've no idea who lives in back to back terraced housing, semis or 4 bed detacheds.

MadameAnchou · 06/04/2019 22:07

No thanks! I wouldn't like that at all.

DailyMailSucksWails · 06/04/2019 22:07

We know someone who lives out of shouting distance to nearest neighbours; someone was banging on their house (or maybe just their gate) at 2am. Shouting gibberish for 5-10 minutes. They didn't enjoy their isolation so much at that moment.

S1naidSucks · 06/04/2019 22:07

That’s just about far enough away to be acceptable and now I’m jealous. However I’d advise that you turn that ditch into a shuck, just in case. Perhaps throw in a couple of pet crocodiles.

Siameasy · 06/04/2019 22:09

No way. Too scary for me. I find some noise reassuring. Also if there is a noise I can blame the neighbours.

ParkaPerson · 06/04/2019 22:09

I lived somewhere like this as a child. It was great. My parents knew the neighbours though we couldn't see their houses. Played out a lot with the kids and we all had dogs.

To be honest my neighbiurs in the city wouldn't call the police if they DID hear me scream so I don't think it makes much difference 🤷🏼‍♀️

Youngandfree · 06/04/2019 22:09

@S1naidSucks good idea! 👍😂😂

BasilWhoosh · 06/04/2019 22:09

I've lived in a place where our nearest neighbours were a mile down the road and the nearest village was five miles away. I absolutely loved it and it wasn't creepy at all. You just have to be a bit more organised with basics like bread and milk because it was a pain to get home and realise that you didn't have enough milk for the morning. We also always had a well stocked freezer for similar reasons!

Shmoople · 06/04/2019 22:09

I love riding alone at night in the dark in the fields or the forest.

Are you on nodding terms with the local headless horseman?

Claphands · 06/04/2019 22:09

I used to think it’d be great but I’ve recently moved to a seaside town from London and I now realise how used to a town I was, so gone are any dreams of living in the countryside for me!

FifisLovelyApron · 06/04/2019 22:10

If my neighbour heard me scream she'd put the kettle on and get comfortable.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 06/04/2019 22:10

I would hate it but only because you would have to drive everywhere. Fuck that.

Stroan · 06/04/2019 22:12

I lived in a house like that as a child. Woods to the back and side of the house and fields all round the rest. Didn't ever find it creepy then and we never even locked the door. I don't think my Mum was too bothered either, it was her favourite house.

Now, I'd find it hard. I don't even like looking out of my kitchen window and seeing darkness!

TheDarkOverload · 06/04/2019 22:12

In theory that sounds like heaven... As long as you can get Tesco home delivery and a decent internet connection!

In practice, I think I would like a couple of houses within walking distance and I'd be concerned about general practicality eg how cut off would I be in bad weather and the actual getting materials and services on site to build a house.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 06/04/2019 22:15

I wouldn't like it because I like to live within walking distance of a few basic amenities (shop, pub etc)

NewAndImprovedNorks · 06/04/2019 22:15

I have lived NEARLY this rurally.

Pro: stars, silence, peace, animals, space
Cons: when it snows, EVERY journey is in a car, everything needs to be planned “oh, are you going to the supermarket, please take my car and get a new tyre”...because everything is so far away. Those fields you think you can wander through....of course you can’t because your dogs will try to eat pheasants

I am happier now on the edge of a small town with facilities, but I must say the years we spent rurally were pretty special

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/04/2019 22:17

sounds like hell to me

I couldn't live somewhere without street lights, pavement and a nearby shop

and I'd hate to live anywhere which meant a car journey every time i went out

each to their own I guess

Dippypippy1980 · 06/04/2019 22:17

I would hate living rurally, I can walk to work, to the primary school, to the shops etc. Urban living of course hasn’t it’s down side (hugely expensive and neighbours) but I love being able to walk to a restaurant, have a meal and a glass of wine and walk (or sometimes cycle) home.

Would you be okay is the dead of winter? Driving in the snow etc?

PigletJohn · 06/04/2019 22:17

You don't mind the noise and fumes of agricultural machinery? Or the spraying? or the dust in dry spells?

VirginiaWolfHall · 06/04/2019 22:18

No sorry I wouldn’t like that at all. I like my own space, but I also like courteous neighbours around me!

alwaysstressed · 06/04/2019 22:18

You'll need to get yourself a big german shepherd or a rottweiller

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 06/04/2019 22:19

Heaven, I would love to live like this.
