I'm in my first trimester. second pregnancy. I really wanted one.

Some websites say avoid bevause of Listeria but from minimal research I've done tells me 100% of cases of Listeria was because of salad and vegetables. There are 0 reported cases from fish or cheese.

So I've eaten it. It was really nice. Aibu?

NHS website said smoked salmon was ok so I'd say go for it!

ScreamingValenta · 06/04/2019 09:24

No idea of the rights and wrongs of eating one when PG but you've made me really fancy one now! Grin

I would only look at the nhs advice rather than lots of random websites. The NHS advise is that it is fine. In all honesty though, too much smoked food isn’t good for anyone as it is a carcinogen. A little in moderation is fine.

I actually took my 10 month old out to the shop first thing just to buy it. It was worth it.

Fine according to NHS so go for it.

CherryPavlova · 06/04/2019 09:43

I developed pica around smoked and tinned salmon during my second pregnancy and lived on the stuff. I detested it prior to my pregnancy too. Our son is fit and we’ll and oddly has a real passion for good fish still.

celeryeater · 06/04/2019 09:45

I would say no. Worked in food microbiology for ten years and smoked salmon is a very common source of listeria. The NHS guild lines are crap.

Nowthenforever2019 · 06/04/2019 09:55

Hi celery,I couldn't find any evidence of a pregnant woman getting Listeria from salmon when I looked online but if you work in the field you might have better info. Do you know if there have been any cases?

Really don't understand why my message was deleted when everything I said was absolutely true? I even said I wasn't trying to scare her and probably she will be fine. You can't just censor things because it's not what you want to hear.

Littlechocola · 08/04/2019 01:17

I really want one now

celeryeater · 08/04/2019 01:24

Me too, and I probably will because I'm not pregnant Wine

I don't know how to make a link clicky, but here is basically what I said for anyone else searching the Internet on the matter.

Gth1234 · 08/04/2019 02:35

If you can do it at home, freeze the salmon first. Its supposed to be healthier.

abbey44 · 08/04/2019 02:51

I wish I hadn't read this - I've just had to raid the fridge for the smoked salmon I knew was lurking in there.... Hmm

BumpLoading · 08/04/2019 03:31

I had a smoked salmon bagel in my first trimester too after googling this in tescos for ages as was unsure what the recommendation was! Am now in second trimester and going strong 💪 I think the odd one would be fine as NHS said it is and besides fish is good for you! Will definitely check out celery’s link for future reference but no point worrying about it once it’s eaten.

echt · 08/04/2019 04:03

I detested it prior to my pregnancy too. Our son is fit and we’ll and oddly has a real passion for good fish still

My mother loved sour (baking) apples and pickles during her pregnancies. I abhor sweet apples and love pickles.

Nowthenforever2019 · 08/04/2019 06:34

Celery, I didn't report your thread so I don't know who did. I didn't respond as it didn't seem i was going to change your mind or you mine. The facts are there are no confirmed cases of smoked salmon giving anyone listeria, pregnant or otherwise, and the 300 or so cases of listeria a year with preggos are because of unwashed salad and vegetables. No one is advocating pregnant women not eating salad, so there's a holier than thou element to pregnancy I can't stand. People not drinking caffeine is one I can't stand.

You'd hate me as last pregnancy I was known to partake in the odd wine or champagne when the mood took so cheers 🍷 hope the weather is Ok all the way up there

YABU to even consider eating smoked salmon when NOT pregnant. 🤮

If you are going to worry at all afterwards, don’t eat it

Furble · 08/04/2019 06:37

I’ve had smoked salmon bagel for breakfast at least 50 times this pregnancy Blush. All seems to be fine with us. A little bit of what you fancy OP!

ememem84 · 08/04/2019 06:41

Currently 25 weeks pregnant. Just woken up. Hungry.

Please send smoked salmon bagel here.

Nowthenforever2019 · 08/04/2019 06:41

You asked! And I gave you the correct information. If you don't care, eat all the smoked salmon you want.
