AIBU for £900!

AIBU to think £900 for a 4 day school trip for 13/14 year olds is a tad excessive?? I would understand if it's a private school or even a school in an affluent area but it isn't! It's a poor area with very low wage jobs! Parents can barely afford school lunches let alone £900 for a trip which doesn't even include spending money etc

Depends on where it is to really.

It's optional so if the situation is as you describe, I guess very few students will be going.

When dd started secondary school in 2017 the ski trip was £1800. And we live in a 'poor' area!!

Hm, it's a pretty average price from what I've experienced. Is it skiing? We've managed to avoid that one so far!
If it's not an educational one I'd say avoid it. If it's a history one then try and go as I think they are the most interesting for the topic they are learning about.

YANBU at all that's over £200 per day! Ridiculous amount of money for 4 days. That's the price of a family holiday got most people.

It might be that you're subsidising some of the children going, if it's not an optional trip.
Ours were always expensive because the parents that had to pay subsidised those that didn't. Eg, trip that would cost £300 for 30 children (so £10/child) would cost £15 per child as only 20 out of the 30 children in the class would be asked to pay, as the other children received free school meals and so weren't expected to pay.

That does seem really expensive though.

We had a (skiing) trip like that come up when I was in year 8 (trip was the year after but we were given loads of warning), it coincided with The Great Recession so most of us didn't even bother asking.

Is it to Spain? Same price dd’s School charged for 4 day’s there, luckily eve dd baulked at that!

If course it matters! Skiing trips at dts school are 1500, they won't be going.

I personally don’t thinks it’s a huge amount however as others have said it depends where too?!

Also the school must think it’s worth it if that’s what they have chosen, maybe because the kids don’t get to go to such places with family.

It matters so we can judge if it’s reasonable op. May stick cost a lot of money but it’s whether is value for money.

Of course it matters where it is - my sons have had the opportunity of school trips to the Caribbean or New York or Swanage ! ( They only went to Swanage )

DS2 (YR6) have a 3 day trip to London £390 and they have to pay separate for their own lunch as not included.
when I told the school he wouldn't be going because I could pay for 7 days abroad for that, they said he would be missing out on "a once in a lifetime opportunity".

For £900 I would expect a tour of the Grand Canyon with sarnies thrown in.

Our school runs a few expensive trips but always limited places and in the holidays so not everyone goes .

It might be something that your child will really benefit from, but you can't afford to go as a family, so paying £900 for an incredible experience might actually be worth it, if the alternative is spending £3000 for whole family to go?
