Aibu - Whole Earth Peanut Butter & sodding Palm Oil

I'm 99.9% certain this never contained palm oil. Yet now it does? What the eff and geoff is wrong with having PEANUT OIL in Peanut butter?!

Other than the fact they can obviously replace it with bloody Palm Oil and sell the peanut oil on for a profit 🙄

Didn't it used to just be peanuts in it? Wasn't that their whole marketing strategy?

Now to get palm oil free Peanut Butter I have to pay £5 for a jar the size of a small Marmite pot 😭

Yes I’ve switched to meridian too. And now Ds has decided he likes it.

I’ll be bankrupted by peanut butter!

Is this the aldi one? It certainly used to be palm oil free. Meridian's peanut butter is palm oil free but much more expensive.

Meridian doesn’t.
Also the whole earth one says the palm oil is sustainable.

No way! I just bought a jar of the Whole Earth without it even occurring to me to check. That is ridiculous.

@BiscuitDrama sustainable or not I dont want it in my food. It belongs in shampoo and engine grease.

Tesco do their own peanut butter which is literally just peanuts and much cheaper than meridian!

The Foodie Market from Aldi is palm oil free. Not expensive either.

No, @Sindragosan I think the Aldi one was a whole earth copy. But I'll check that one later too when I pop there to get some ricecakes for (toddling empty legged peanut devouring) ds 😳

But there is a whole page on their website about why it's really a good thing that they are now using palm oil.

Massive tub of Meridian peanut butter on offer in Asda for £2 at the moment! We stocked up! Also the Aldi peanut butter (the fancier one) is palm oil free!

Whole Earth has always had palm oil in it - it's sustainable palm oil.

Please don't just knock palm oil - if it's produced sustainably (ie - in non-forested areas), it's actually one of the most eco-friendly things to include in our diets. - it produces the highest amount of oil (of all the nut-butters/oils) per the amount of land & water used to grow the plants. (eg. it's much much more eco friendly than eating almonds).

No palm oil is sustainable unfortunately, no matter how much they try and pretend it is!

The so-called sustainable plantations have more deforestation than the non-sustainable ones. It really is best to avoid it in all types.

well, having read their page on sustainable palm oil (though admittedly not knowing much about it) I think it's probably OK.

Pip and nut are delicious. Although it’s their almond oil I eat by the bucket full.

Anyone saying palm oil is OK needs to do some research. No palm oil is 'sustainable'. In any way.

It's also not something we should be fecking eating.

I tried the Pip and nut stuff and it all settled in the jar and was oily on top. That's not a problem and I think it warns on the packaging that it can happen and says to give it a stir. Which I did. But...the whole thing just went oily and runny when I did. It's just really oily.

I'm not going to be quite so black and white, OP - I am aware that for many subsistence economies (if that is the right phrase) palm oil is a life saver and I will read up more on this Round Table certification.

And then make my own mind up.

But I have done research.
I just really hope that people who avoid sustainable palm oil, also don't eat other oily foods to replace the palm oil, especially almonds, avocados and any non-vegan foods, because those things are much, much worse on the environment.

However, I understand the desire to not eat palm oil - just remember, it is the lesser of many evils.

I love Meridian peanut butter, and it’s not expensive really, works out cheaper than branded peanut butter, especially if you buy the 1 kg tub.

(Only £2 at Asda! faints sadly we don’t have an Asda nearby)
