To wonder why people buy clear dog poo bags

Littlefroggy18 · 02/04/2019 17:56

I mean really...should they even exist?? Why why would you buy a clear one where you can see all the poo inside considering you usually have to walk some distance before you get to a bin?! The amount of people I see daily walking round with see through bags full of shit is ridiculous! Buy black ones!!!

Didn't read the thread so someone has probably already said but its cheaper to buy nappy bags.

Reminder to also only buy bags that decompose. I'm 22 and determined to get through the rest of my life and die without seeing an animal go extinct because if plastic. Thanks!

Boatsnack3 · 02/04/2019 19:09

The black poo bags I buy are biodegradable. I did once use a sandwich bag when dog sitting and Mil dog went 3 times on the school run, had to take dds sandwich out of the bag first Grin

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 02/04/2019 19:12

Biodegradable plastic isn't necessarily great for the environment - as it decomposes it can leak harmful chemicals into the ground and it also releases greenhouse gases. Paper is better. Don't laugh! You can actually buy strong paper bags designed for dog poo.

SunnyInGrimsby · 02/04/2019 19:17

So many products already come wrapped in plastic - weekend newspapers, magazines, some veg just for starters - I just use what would be thrown away.
No idea why anyone needs to buy more planet-busting, animal-throttling plastic when we are drowning in it for free.

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 19:29

I'm.afraid plastic is not really a lighthearted topic anymore really is it?

Actually quite scarey.

Also, black cannot be put into recycle, and does leech nasty things into the ground.

I do wish users would take responsibility for what they are throwing around.

BTW, I don't make light-hearted sexist threads or tell sexist jokes either....should know better really!

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 19:32

I also reuse like that Sunny.

I live by massive forest. All plastic banned. All advice is to throw it off the pathways into undergrowth so it breaks down into the soil, no bags hanging on trees, trodden into pathways and no poo's anywhere either.

It's really not hard, but it does seem to create a massive problem for many.

Also idiots like to throw bags all over places too

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 19:33

....bet they wouldn't mess with the poo, unbagged though!

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 19:34

Please link Harold's

You might have made a change here OP!

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 02/04/2019 19:37

Please don't flick and stick! Dog waste contains harmful chemicals. If you do this anywhere near livestock, they can be poisoned. Other wild animals such as ground nesting birds will be similarly affected. This happens long after the poo has gone due to ground contamination so it doesn't even matter if you "only" do it at times when other animals aren't in evidence. Also, waste left on the ground in this way always makes it into the water table at some point. Honestly, it's a really bad thing to do.

SamBaileys · 02/04/2019 19:41

I buy black ones. As others have said, I couldn't care less as long as the poo is picked up.

UrsulaPandress · 02/04/2019 19:47

I thought National Trust advice was to stick ‘n’ flick.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 02/04/2019 19:51

It is. But it contradicts all environmental advice for the reasons I've given.

wowfudge · 02/04/2019 19:52

Please don't put your poo bags in the nearest bin if it's someone else's! Some twat had put a number of them in our garden waste bin at the end of our drive, I presume over a few days whilst we were away. They're not acceptable in the composting bin so muggins here had to get them out and put them in our general waste bin. I would love to return them to the lazy bastard who stuck them in there.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 02/04/2019 20:01

Here's some information about how dog waste contaminates land and water:

chandylier · 02/04/2019 20:02

Oh no, wow fudge, I meant the nearest public bin, that’s gross to just put them in someone else’s bin

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 02/04/2019 20:04

Damage caused to livestock:

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 20:09

So where does not end up then Harolds exactly...if not in the ground, or in the environment?

What chemicals are you referencing precisely? Are these far more harmful than non/degrading plastic caught in guts, leached in landfill (plus poo)?

You do realise that livestock are doing the same though?

That land is routinely carpeted in chemicals?

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 20:10

....oops....that some people actually lift grass and plant, to cover with plastic and cement, just because some bollox about upkeep or look

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 20:12

You're in the states Harolds? Where meat is routinely sprayed with chlorine?

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 20:13

Do you know about ticks etc, n sheep, n dogs, etc?

WendyWoofer · 02/04/2019 20:14

Dog Owners ...Dont use clear bags, black bags, pink bags blah blah to pick up your dogs poo. Whatever you do dont put the poo in someone's bin. Never stick n flick - despite signs asking you to (there may be animals around that the poo will poison see - but definately not in a "stick n flick" area).

Just get a dicky bag. It clips onto your belt, the smell is minimised, cheap from all animal stores (aka Pets at Home) and best of all you can ignore the superior rantings of weird MN posters.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 02/04/2019 20:28

Contaminants from dog poo include salmonella, e coli, campylobactor and others.

Pet waste is actually an environmental nightmare. Livestock waste is generally contained and can be composted within site. Dogs and cats on the other hand are everywhere that humans are and produce millions of tonnes of waste every year.

Leaving it contaminates ground and water and is harmful to livestock and wildlife as well as encouraging plants such as nettles to grow due to the change in composition of the soil.

Non biodegradable bags are obviously problematic but as explained so are the biodegradable ones. And dog waste in landfill whatever it's wrapped in releases methane.

Really the best solution would be for people to compost the waste themselves, but that's a lot of effort.

Palominoo · 02/04/2019 20:33

I bought a Dicky bag. It was hideous and awful when opened to rid the bags. You may as well buy any small cross body bag and stick something scented in it.

Actually the scented discs combined with dog poo was far worse than dog poo on its own.

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 20:36

I don't see your argument at all Harolds

Individual droppings as opposed to bagging it all and collecting it enmasse to dump in landfilll?

No, its not 'contained' at all. Livestock are literally covering the land with steroids, ABs, powerful anti-parasitics, plus all the sheep-dip, and all the chemicals routinely spread on the land, it all seems into the water table.

There are vast numbers of harmful bacteria that routinely reside in the soil.

Are you from the states?
