to think loo paper is what it's called

AIBU to think asking a 5 year old to say toilet tissue is a horrible genteelism?

It's loo paper, and you flush it down a loo.

Also, has anyone else noticed how dusty it is?

Tissue paper??!? Confused

DIZZYTIGGER87 · 01/04/2019 16:45

I say toilet or loo roll.

I also say pardon

I have learnt from this thread that this makes me common. I had no idea about the poshness scale🤷...here is my something new learnt today 😏

wanderings · 01/04/2019 16:47

Good communication on this tissue issue is vital.

Mrs Richards: "There's no paper in my room. Why don't you check these things?"
Polly: "We don't put it in the rooms, we keep it in the lounge."
Mrs Richards: "In the lounge?!"
Polly: "I'll get you some. Do you want plain ones, or ones with our address on it? And how many sheets?"

Mummyoflittledragon that’s funny, I have never thought of that connection!! I say tissue paper but I write it on the shopping list as T. rolls (tissue rolls) Think my mind must be broken. Never going to think the same again! 😀

SosigDog · 01/04/2019 16:49

My first response was “ who even uses the T word, how common”. It’s laughable that someone thinks it’s posh to call it toilet tissue!!

Ronsters · 01/04/2019 16:49

Toilet roll, sometimes bog roll

tennisracquet · 01/04/2019 16:49

no one who posts on mumsnet is posh
why pretend you are?!

Quintella · 01/04/2019 16:52

My first response was “ who even uses the T word, how common”.

You know what they say about people who use the word 'common'...

JessieMcJessie · 01/04/2019 16:56

I agree that staff should not impose their own terms when kids still learning. But did they really say “toilet tissue” and not “toilet paper”? To me “tissue” is what the ads/packets say, but “paper” is what is used in conversation.

Toilet vs loo- I can imagine a school saying that children must say “Please Miss, may I go to the toilet?” rather than “Please Miss, may I go to the loo?” To me “loo” is a bit more chatty/conversational so perhaps it’s just a register thing?

livinglongerwithcalgon · 01/04/2019 16:59

So ‘toilet’ is a class marker, eh? Wikipedia is telling me that it denotes the aspiring middle classes, versus the upper class. What about the working class?

We say toilet roll or toilet paper. In our delusion we were of course hoping that members of the upper classes passing by our council house to hear cries of “We’re out of toilet paper!” would thereby determine what a good sort we are. We’ll obviously have to start shouting ‘loo roll’ or we’ll never be invited over. I shall update DH on the approved word list at once.

JessieMcJessie · 01/04/2019 17:02

Toilet paper or toilet roll actually- would use them interchangeably.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/04/2019 17:08

living long
Yes it is. I say loo. Wink But I fail on the “tea” front. I used to call it this with dd as she had it early and wanted a selection of cold premade / pre cooked items but now i say dinner as it is later and often warm.

Walkaround · 01/04/2019 17:10

So long as you know what is meant, who cares? What sort of judgemental, silly person makes a fuss about what someone else calls something made to wipe your bum with (or blow your nose with, if necessary...)?

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/04/2019 17:10

Pinkbells
I find tissue rolls just as odd. For me that’s rolled up tissues from a box. Am I just too literal? Grin

Pinkyyy · 01/04/2019 17:13

I have never used the word loo. I have a personal dislike for 'bog' but I'm shocked at the snobbery on this thread.

AgathaF · 01/04/2019 17:13

So Agatha you agree that bog standard loo roll is dusty? I definitely do. Not the lovely quilted stuff though Wink.

fblake · 01/04/2019 17:14

Loo roll in my house. X

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 01/04/2019 17:16

Oh dear. The people who are suggesting lavatory is worse than toilet are really betraying their class! It's a misunderstanding that lavatory is a "pretentious word". It isn't. It's an old and direct word.

Lavatory + lav + loo = both OK/ U/ upper class.
Toilet = lower class/ non-U

www.newstatesman.com/culture/books/2016/01/toilet-or-lavatory-how-words-britons-use-betray-our-national-obsession-class

In her essay on “Social Solecisms” (1907), Lady Agnes Grove lamented the middle-class use of words such as reception, couch, serviette (instead of the “honest napkin”), and expressions including going up to town (meaning London) and inviting people for the weekend.

"Seven Deadly Sins” which will immediately reveal you as a member of the middle class, or resident of “Pardonia”: pardon, toilet, serviette, dinner (to refer to the midday meal), settee, lounge, sweet (instead of pudding).

Sirzy · 01/04/2019 17:20

I find all of this fascinating. Nowhere other than mumsnet have I experienced people so against the word toilet. I would have never imagined it could be so offensive!

Shodan · 01/04/2019 17:23

Loo roll here. Occasionally bog roll, depending on my mood.

And since a PP has already mentioned wet wipes, I hereby throw in my most favourite phrase in the world :

MOIST TOWELETTE. (I find myself unsure now whether it's two Ls or one, but I'll go with one)

So delightfully twee. And has the added bonus of making 90% of the population squirm at the use of the word MOIST. Grin

Gone4Good · 01/04/2019 17:26

We call it toilet paper at home but for some reason while shopping my husband never fails to bellow out, "Do we need any arse wipe"?

Megan2018 · 01/04/2019 17:27

Weirdly in our house we use "the loo" - but buy toilet roll!

I've never realised that before.

We do though eat Supper/dinner and never tea.....

NameChangeNugget · 01/04/2019 17:28

Toilet tissue at 5??!!

Poor child Grin

mummyhaschangedhername · 01/04/2019 17:28

Toilet roll here.

Ronsters · 01/04/2019 17:28

Pinkyy, I'm not surprised at the snobbery, it's pretty bog standard on these type of threads, if you'll pardon the pun!
