Skinny Milk instead of Skim Milk - silly pet peeves

le42 · 30/03/2019 11:03

Annoys me when coffee shops say skinny milk/coffee instead of just skim - which is the name of the milk and a shorter word!

What silly pet peeves do you have?

OP posts:
Cushellekoala · 30/03/2019 17:09

I've thought of another : "freshly cut sandwiches"
It always makes me think they probably made them 4 days ago but only cut them 5 minutes ago!

DappledThings · 30/03/2019 17:10

Full fat coke is just a jokey way to say ‘not Diet Coke.’ We all know it’s fat free, but it’s just comparing it to full fat milk. It’s a not very funny but essentially harmless joke

Exactly. In the same way I refer to full fat coffee (not decaff) and full fat wine (not non-alcoholic).

SalmonFishing · 30/03/2019 17:13

and it’s “butter” flavour popcorn as no one has applied butter to each kernel you absolute morons

If I saw 'butter flavoured popcorn' I'd assume the popcorn had been coated with an artificial butter flavouring rather than actual butter. Because popcorn with plain old melted butter on it is of course 'buttered popcorn'.

SalmonFishing · 30/03/2019 17:16

Cushellekoala, Mary Berry recommends, when catering for large numbers, making sandwiches the day before they're needed and keeping them fresh by placing a damp tea towel over them. So you may not be wrong! Grin

borntobequiet · 30/03/2019 17:20

I have always done the damp tea towel thing for sandwiches made in advance and recommend it. My sandwiches are made with buttered bread.

cantfindname · 30/03/2019 17:24

I hate, loathe, detest and abhor 'cheeky' in the context of

'a cheeky coffee'

'A cheeky biscuit' etc

I also really dislike 'dirty' as in 'dirty rice' or a 'dirty burger'.

Yes, yes to the 'easy peelers' and add to that 'baking potatoes' In my experience not every large potato qualifies as a baking potato.. tell me the variety ffs.

SalmonFishing · 30/03/2019 17:24

I'm definitely going to try it next time I have to make sandwiches for a crowd.

SmarmyMrMime · 30/03/2019 17:24

Any kind of "skinny" coffee makes me think of a sad greyish beverage with a skin like school custard. Not a great selling point.

Why has coffee become more complicated than cricket? How many variations on a bitter brown beverage with varying quanities of milk can there actually be?Confused

Siameasy · 30/03/2019 17:31

Trendy
Here you go:
Op asked if she was U to find “skinny” annoying when applied to skimmed milk

I explained why I find “skinny” annoying in that context ie it’s bollocks because skimmed milk is fattening and indicative of a bigger problem with the diet industry

Obviously then hit a huge nerve🤷‍♀️

What’s the problem?

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 30/03/2019 17:35

Fabulous thread.

Skimmed milk is 0.1% fat. “Pack up” is regional - I first heard it in Yorkshire.

I say “Breggzit”, but I would also say “eggzit”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say “brecsit” or indeed “ecsit”. I will have to ask everyone I know now in case I’m weird.

Things that set my teeth on edge are affect/effect used incorrectly, newsreaders saying “Pri Minister”, and “invite” instead of “invitation”. And “could of”. And the name of the letter H being pronounced “haitch”.....

I could go on....

Of course language evolves, and most of these will probably become “correct” usage in time, but they are still like nails down a blackboard.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 30/03/2019 17:42

@siameasy who's got a problem? Just curious about how a harmless thread about the word "skim managed to get you frothing at the mouth about fat people. 🤔

Sounds like you're the one with a problem 🤷‍♀️ get a diet coke down you and chill out.

cardibach · 30/03/2019 17:45

siam in what way is skimmed milk fattening (other than in the fact it contains some calories, like every other thing you might eat and drink...).

Dramatical · 30/03/2019 17:59

I say breXit and eXit because the words have X in them and not G

BollocksToBrexit · 30/03/2019 18:00

"Spends" as in I have my holiday spends put aside or we'll need extra spends for that day out. WTF are "spends"? It's spending money or even just money.

Is this a regional thing? When I grew up in the 70s in the northwest we got 'spends' every Saturday to buy sweets as did our friends. Never heard the term 'pock money' until we moved down south.

SalmonFishing · 30/03/2019 18:01

I say breggzit and eggzit

FurrySlipperBoots · 30/03/2019 18:04

I wonder how many of the posters busy slamming the OP, themselves go round saying 'gifted'...

Dramatical · 30/03/2019 18:08

furry

I don't get it?

FuzzyPuffling · 30/03/2019 18:11

I hate "Box sets". It's "Boxed sets". It is not a set of boxes.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 30/03/2019 18:12

Do you always pronounce “x” like the name of the letter? How do you pronounce “exam”? Do you pronounce the X in “exam” and “exonerate” the same as the X in “flex” and “extra” and “exhume”? Because I don’t, and it appears neither does my DH. The last three definitely have that X sound, and it seems to depend on whether the X is before a vowel or consonant.

It could be a regional thing. Accents are really interesting.

Dramatical · 30/03/2019 18:19

Actually no, I don't. I'm confused now I have thought about it 🙈

eGzam

eXonerate

eXtra

eXhume

I say scone, you say scone....

Cushellekoala · 30/03/2019 18:35

I think it must be regional then because I've never heard anyone say egg-sit for exit....therefore it seemed wrong to say breg-sit. I would say ex-am as well. (Actually now i think about it i would say it as ix-ams!! ) I'm not sure I've ever used the word exonerate but how its written i would use a hard x like in flex for example. (Thats example not egg-sample 😉)

Cushellekoala · 30/03/2019 18:35

What about congra-d- ulations?

GlitterPixie · 30/03/2019 18:39

Draws instead of Drawers’ especially ‘Chester Draws’

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/03/2019 18:47

I also really dislike 'dirty' as in 'dirty rice' or a 'dirty burger'.

I must admit, I always think of the takeaway ready cheeseburgers that they sell at Spar as 'dirty burgers' - not because they have any speckled/brown-coloured toppings but simply because of how I feel if I grab one, rather than taking the trouble to either prepare something myself or having the virtue to make a healthier takeaway choice.

I happened to go there late the other evening and they had a few left that were half-price, so I bought two. Pure filth!

Just to confirm, I don't refer to them as that to the person on the checkout....
