Skinny Milk instead of Skim Milk - silly pet peeves

le42 · 30/03/2019 11:03

Annoys me when coffee shops say skinny milk/coffee instead of just skim - which is the name of the milk and a shorter word!

What silly pet peeves do you have?

I have no issue on the milk front, that might be because I don’t drink the stuff.

Though as the milk has been skimmed before it is used, I would think that using the past tense when referring to milk being used in a cafe is the most logical.

Hazeintheclouds · 30/03/2019 11:34

Logic does not seem to enter into it when poor - and baffling - English is being defended. Confused

Hazeintheclouds · 30/03/2019 11:35

Always make me picture a heavily tattooed chest being described by a child. grin

@Shoppingwithmother I have fantasies of a a barista replying 'yes' and just standing there stationary. Just to be literal.

GreatAuntBertha · 30/03/2019 11:37

I've only heard Americans refer to 'skim milk'.

HelloViroids · 30/03/2019 11:37

@AnettePrice - a THOUSAND TIMES YES on the easy peelers! I like satsumas. I don’t want mandarins or clementines. Please just tell me what kinds of fruit it is! ‘Weeps’

GreatAuntBertha · 30/03/2019 11:38

Never encountered 'easy peeler'.

HildaZelda · 30/03/2019 11:41

@Hazeintheclouds, you mean 'Chester draws" surely Grin

'Babycino' is the one that gets me, inevitably followed on Facebook by a toddler 'chilling' with a cup of foamy milk Hmm

HildaZelda · 30/03/2019 11:42

Hazeintheclouds · 30/03/2019 11:43

Chester Draws? Isn’t he related to Bercow?
Grin

Siameasy · 30/03/2019 11:48

Also Mac and cheese
Macaroni cheese thank you

Skinny annoys me. You’re not gonna be skinny through drinking skimmed milk in lieu of full fat. Skimmed milk is rank IMO and, a bit like with Diet Coke (“Diet Coke is for fat people”), the people who buy into this sort of thing are usually overweight but experiencing cognitive dissonance

colehawlins · 30/03/2019 11:50

And wtaf is a "packup", while we're at it?)

That's a regional thing.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 30/03/2019 11:52

Agree. Hate having to say skinny flat white. Flat white with skimmed milk please!

Glitterblue · 30/03/2019 11:52

Skim milk instead of skimmed
Text instead of texted
Chester draws
Brought instead of bought
I done/I seen/we was
Saying someone "rocked up"

kaitlinktm · 30/03/2019 11:53

the people who buy into this sort of thing are usually overweight but experiencing cognitive dissonance

Or maybe they're just trying to lose weight.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 30/03/2019 11:55

I prefer skimmed milk because it doesn’t trigger my IBS. Skinny latte / cappuccino is quite a common way to put it. Although colloquially where I live milk is red / green / blue as opposed to skimmed, semi, etc. Agree that skim (as opposed to skimmed) is an Americanism.

Dramatical · 30/03/2019 11:56

I ask for a skinny cappuccino. Because it's made with skimmed milk so therefore a 'skinny' version of cappuccino.

I ask for skimmed milk for my tea because that's what it is called.

I have never in my life said 'skim milk' because that's all kind of wrong.

le42 · 30/03/2019 11:57

Oh god wish I'd phrased it differently! I don't say skim milk or order it... I was making the point that instead of saying skinny latte it would be easier to say skim latte as an abbreviation of skimmed!!

Was just a silly point 😅😅

OP posts:
M4J4 · 30/03/2019 11:57

But skinny latte is a thing, 'skim latte' is not.

YABU.

Dramatical · 30/03/2019 11:58

Sorry OP, but no.

Hollowvictory · 30/03/2019 11:59

Go ahead and say skim latte if you want op it's a free country. It's just not common barrista parlance but they'll know what you mean. You don't need our permission.

Lovestonap · 30/03/2019 12:00

Skim and skimmed have been said too much in this thread. They have now lost their meaning and look like Scandinavian words 😂

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 30/03/2019 12:00

" the people who buy into this sort of thing are usually overweight but experiencing cognitive dissonance"

Wow.

Hazeintheclouds · 30/03/2019 12:00

Don’t buy it, in either sense, OP. Sorry.

GreatAuntBertha · 30/03/2019 12:02

Bet you're sorry you started this thread now, OP. Buy yourself a big latte!
