To think at 25 I shouldn’t be called a young person

I’ve been out of university for four years now. I work in a professional career and have a one year old daughter. Today at work I was referred to as a young person by colleague. When I think of young people I think of people who are just getting started in life.

One of my customers always calls me young lady , I am 64 , it really cheers me up . Find something else to be upset about , perhaps something serious .

bumblenbean · 29/03/2019 22:31

Well you’re hardly an old person are you?

I wouldn’t think about it too deeply OP. I doubt they meant much by it.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 29/03/2019 22:31

To a 15 year old you're not young.
I'm 43 to me you're a young person.

YeahILoveSummer · 29/03/2019 22:32

You are a young person. You're not exactly middle aged are you?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/03/2019 22:32

You are a young person Confused

User300100 · 29/03/2019 22:34

It’s just that I feel he is saying I don’t have the life experience to comment on certain things due to my age.

nometal · 29/03/2019 22:36

I was a bit indignant when my wife and I were referred to as a young couple. Me in my fifties and my wife in her thirties.

It's all relative OP. Children might think you are old. Enjoy it while you can.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/03/2019 22:37

My crochet teacher referred to me and my friend as ‘you two young people ‘, we were both 50 at the time. I was THRILLED. 😂😂. We were also the youngest by about 20 years, so it depends on the context.

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/03/2019 22:42

You are allowed to comment because of your age. Very recently I said to my 9 year old GD there is a saying don't teach your GM how to suck eggs she immediately responded technology Nana, I need to teach you
My GD was right Grin

saraclara · 29/03/2019 22:44

I think most posters are missing the point. Within a professional environment, having a colleague refer to you as a young person is disconcerting. Because it could easily indicate a lack of respect for the OP's abilities, or be used to undermine their status.

So I think the context of the comment is important. Maybe she's over-reacting, but maybe there is some power play involved.

Singlenotsingle · 29/03/2019 22:45

My dsf used to say to me and his DS, "You youngsters....". He died aged 91. I was 63 at the time Grin

notharryssally · 29/03/2019 22:54

Ffs 😂 You are young. And you probably don't have much life experience, simple as that. You can comment on whatever you please though.

Sparklesocks · 29/03/2019 22:56

In the big scheme of things 25 is young.

User300100 · 29/03/2019 22:57

I’ve been through a lot on my life and matured very early due to this.

OP posts:
Purpletigers · 29/03/2019 22:58

Considering your brain doesn’t fully develop until you’re 25, then yes you’re young . Enjoy it! Before you know it, you’ll be old wishing you were young . It’s a compliment not an insult .

Purpletigers · 29/03/2019 23:00

Everyone always thinks they’re more mature than they probably are . It’s not a race !

Vulpine · 29/03/2019 23:01

Given that the average age for women to live to is approx 80 years can you not see you are being slightly precious and a lot inaccurate.

Sparklesocks · 29/03/2019 23:03

I don’t think they are meaning anything nasty by it. It’s better than being referred to as old!

Skypatrol · 29/03/2019 23:04

Lol and they do say youth is wasted on the young.

You ARE a young person,it's not an insult, it's a wonderful thing.

I felt the same in my late teens and 20s, didn't want to be dismissed as a young person.

I'm only 34 now but I've already become old and invisible. Oh how I miss being called a young person.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/03/2019 23:15

You ARE a young person. Enjoy it while it lasts because it won't.

itssoooofluffy · 29/03/2019 23:16

You are young, I think I’m young too and I’m 27!

You may have lots of life experience for your age, and maybe more so than some people older than you. But everyone thinks they are more mature and know more than they do!

It probably depends what you’re offering to comment on and what your experience is before we can say whether or not YABU to be annoyed.

slightlysnippy · 29/03/2019 23:51

Being called a young person is usually a compliment, do you feel the person that said it undermines you in other ways?

anniehm · 30/03/2019 00:00

You can still get a young persons railcard!

Defender90 · 30/03/2019 00:10

Someone found out my age at work just the other week (37) exclaimed oh s**t you're just a bairn. I'll take it.

Doesn't change how good I am at my job or how my colleagues see me.

KismetJayn · 30/03/2019 00:13

I know what you mean. I'm 24. People expect you to have little experience of life or comparative understanding. In a professional environment you aren't taken as seriously.

Yup, I get it.
