To think dd should go to a and e?

She fell off her horse on Saturday. Has lots of brusing around ribs. Was checked over by paramedics and can walk.

It's a few days later and she can walk with difficulty and has sharp pains in her hips and spine. She can't bend over.

I rang the gp on her behalf and they said go to a and e.

But she's refusing. She's 19 so I can't make her! She wants to wait until the weekend and not clutter up a and e.

Wwyd?

Bless her, what a shame. Really glad she got checked out though, a second fall or bump could have made things a lot worse. Fingers crossed she gets good news next week. Flowers

Yes the docs were at pains to point out that a second fall or even an awkward jump could have been disaster.

Not sure she'll get back to where she was now. Too much time off and loss of confidence. Ah well, dhorse will probably be happy to take a step back

The confidence will probably come back. She'll just need to take it steady in manageable for her stages. My first ride was literally a sit on and a walk around the school on a leadrope, then I was okay to have the lead taken off and a small circuit on my own. Just built up from that. If she takes it steady and stays in her comfort zone for a while then hopefully she'll be fine.

Thanks mrsmozart you've been so helpful.

I'd book her some lessons. Lunge lessons would be best so she can focus on her and not the horse.

Lunge lessons are a great idea.

tell her not to be too despondent! I broke my back ten years ago. I did the time off, was terrified and remember the first time back on. Before my accident I was hunting, team chasing and riding advanced eventers, regularly jumping 1.30 courses. That day, I sat on my mums 15 h cob, walked once around the school and bust into tears and hugged him.
It took a while for the nerve to return and tbh it isn't there like it was before. I am a complete wuss jumping (odd, given the accident happened on the flat!) but I am again a calm, capable rider. I am a freelance groom, I ride for approx 12/13 hours a week and am getting my arse into gear jumping again, ready to hopefully go BE by the end of the summer. There is hope! It seems like the end of the world - but one day she will look back on this and it will be the past.

Oh bless her, she's going to be just fine! I'm so glad she's in treatment for her injuries, I'm also impressed at her pain tolerance having broken ribs before too!

As everyone else said, take it slow, it'll come back. My show jumping niece broke her leg in several places in a fall from a horse, had a hip cast for ridiculously long and maybe a year away from riding. She's back at it now and 7/8 years later it's like it never happened at all.
