BettyBoo246 · 26/03/2019 13:03

So I named our dd the same name as another school mums dd, she has a mahoosive problem with it and now completely ignores me!
Here’s the thing I didnt even know her dd had this name (that’s how much we spoke beforehand) also it’s her dd’s shortened name not her actual birth certificate name.
I addressed her in the playground (the irony) and asked what her problem was as she had been going round saying I copied her etc etc she told me she was just shocked I had done it especially as she had told me she wanted her child to be the only one in the school with that name and that it’s an unusual name and originated from her country not the UK so why would I choose it?
Have I completely lost the plot in not understanding her pathetic and immature reaction?

If it was me I wouldn't be bothered in fact I'd take it as a compliment in my name choice. I'd think it was quite cool.
School mum needs to get a grip, someone else will have chosen the same name

She cant expect to go and ignore every person that chooses to name there dd the same. Its laughable OP yanbu! Grin

Cupcakecafe · 26/03/2019 13:23

Mila is in the top 100 baby names (and going up, although slowly) so she can hardly expect to never meet another.

Also I personally wouldn't associate it with a specific country or culture, so I'm not sure where shes coming from with that

springbreak3 · 26/03/2019 13:23

What a twit.

I would name my child whatever I wanted to. IDGAF if anyone was 'upset.' And that goes for friends and extended family too.

No-one owns a name. I know that's been said on here 1000 times, but it's true.

Kedgeree · 26/03/2019 13:23

How is it the DD's shortened name? How do you shorten Mila?

ParisWilton · 26/03/2019 13:25

Mila is used as a diminutive so I assume the older Mila is something along the lines of Ludmila, Milena, Milica - there is probably others

newbiegreenfingers · 26/03/2019 13:26

Nobody has a monopoly on a name YANBU

soulrunner · 26/03/2019 13:27

No, I think the other girl is know as Mila (Is that My-la or Mi-la btw?)

So presumably she's called Camilla or Millicent or something

Redglitter · 26/03/2019 13:27

How is it the DD's shortened name? How do you shorten Mila

I think Mila is the shortened name so the child name is something like Amelia but they call her Mila

theliverpoolone · 26/03/2019 13:28

she was just shocked I had done it especially as she had told me she wanted her child to be the only one in the school with that name.
Just wondered did she actually ever tell you ^^? You said you didn't even know her dd had this name, but she seems to think she'd told you..... I still think YANBU though, you can call your child whatever you like Grin

SVRT19674 · 26/03/2019 13:29

Mila is a name in Spain. A prime time tv collaborator is called Mila. Usually short for Milagros, but not always. I've met a couple, not that unusual.

ElfridaEtAl · 26/03/2019 13:31

@SleepingStandingUp how do you culturally appropriate a name? I'm not trying to be a dick I'm genuinely asking. DS's name has Hebrew & Jewish roots, neither me or OH are Jewish or speak Hebrew, does that mean I've appropriate d his name?

icelollycraving · 26/03/2019 13:31

If you had used a different name than you are culturally I would see her point. Your choice? No, it’s not that unusual.

RSAcre · 26/03/2019 13:32

saying I copied her etc etc

Fucking hell that's hilariously pathetic. She sounds 8 years old.
YANBU. Ignore the little twerp.

TurquoiseDress · 26/03/2019 13:34

How bizarre her reaction was

she doesn't own the name

and by the sounds of things, you have nothing to do with this woman apart from your children attending the same school

BinaryStar · 26/03/2019 13:35

I think it is one thing to be a bit disappointed that others have used it, quite another to get annoyed with people over it.

Tbh I was a little bit disappointed to find several children with DC1’s name of the very same age locally as the name was not that unusual but not wildly popular either. But thems the breaks and I don’t get exclusivity on the name.

Knittedfairies · 26/03/2019 13:35

she was just shocked I had done it especially as she had told me she wanted her child to be the only one in the school with that name

I'd be interested to know how she's got that on the admissions policy...

BettyBoo246 · 26/03/2019 13:35

I told her that I liked the name before dd was born in a passing comment at the school gates, she now says it was at this point she told me that that was her dds nickname.
I never heard her and honestly I don’t believe she said it but even if I had heard her say it I would have still called dd that name.
What is winding me up is the fact she is telling everyone I copied her.

OP posts:
BinaryStar · 26/03/2019 13:37

Nobody is going to believe you copied her. If someone said to me at the school gate “can you believe BettyBoo copied my child’s name” I would probably actually say “oh, really, that’s a shame” whilst actually thinking that she sounds like an immature drama llama.

Theunreasonableone · 26/03/2019 13:37

Has she had this conversation with Mila Kunis? One of my friends is called Mila and she is 40, so a two year old doesn't have the monopoly on that name.

8misskitty8 · 26/03/2019 13:39

She’s batshit op. Her daughters name isn’t even Mila ! Nor is it an unusual/unique name, I’ve taught 2 in the last few years.

Crossfitgirl · 26/03/2019 13:40

Just tell everyone you did copy her and want to be just like her 😂
Honestly. This is not even worth the time worrying about it. If you explained to her you liked the name, BEFORE she told you her DD was called that, even if she had said that was her DDs name afterwards you can still call your own daughter what ever the hell you like!
Tell her to get fucked.

Oh no, someone has the same name as my daughter.
So do a million other people in the world.

tillytrotter1 · 26/03/2019 13:40

Do make a point of telling her how common it is at the moment!

When we named our first she was the only one we knew with the name and we were both teachers. By the time she was in the 6th form there were four in her year!

Dramatical · 26/03/2019 13:40

What is a 'school mum'? Is this just someone who has a kid at the same school as your kid? In which case they are of no consequence!

clairethewitch70 · 26/03/2019 13:40

I love this name. It is the name of a character on one of my favourite Nintendo DS games - Hotel Dusk Smile

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/03/2019 13:41

A school gate mum (AKA The monkeys Uncle or Auntie rather) Grin
