Fair addition, Acis

Peanut1983 · 25/03/2019 23:39

Im pretty sure maternity rights won't get taken away. Why would they do that? It would not get through. No party would win an election with that promise.

Can you see why people get confused. I was presented a "fact" then that turned out to just be a "risk"

clairemcnam · 25/03/2019 23:39

Arts, business and sciences will suffer... can't we fund our own stuff? Can't we make our own stuff? Can't we trade with other non eu countries?
In the field I work in, we carry out research with other European countries. It is too complex to just do it ourselves. And much of it is EU funded. If we are not part of the EU, no we can not be part of these international research projects. You say you are a scientist, so I am surprised you do not know the impact this has on many scientific areas.
We have already this year in my field, been left out of such research because other EU countries are waiting to see what is going to happen. So it has already affected the company I work for.

longwayoff · 25/03/2019 23:40

Americandream you should be ashamed of yourself. This can't be the end of Brexit I'm afraid, the "swivel eyed loons", David Cameron's words, not mine, have been undermining our EU membership for at least 20 years, they'd simply regroup and resume manoeuvres. Something definitive will have to happen. Presumably another vote with a sensible majority written in as an essential deterninant. Its absurd that approx 1, 500,000 people are holding the majority of us - remain and non voters - hostage to fortune. I would hope for a remain majority but in its absence perhaps the country could be persuaded not to self destruct. Jump off a cliff by all means if you so choose but a majority of us decline to accompany you.

goldengummybear · 25/03/2019 23:40

The Tories are well known for cutting benefits for vulnerable groups- children (Surestart Centres, education...) and the disabled. Would you trust them with employment rights etc ? Or realistically do you think that if they had extra money it would go on policies that benefit the rich in the wealthier areas of the country?

Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to Remain. Do you think that Leaving will lead to Scotland and Northern Ireland leaving the UK?

PinkieTuscadero · 25/03/2019 23:40

What type of scientist are you as a matter of interest?

MeredithGrey1 · 25/03/2019 23:41

So now maternity rights loss is just a risk? How big is the risk?

Maybe the government might make better maternity rights without the eu telling them what to do?

The EU is not stopping us giving better maternity rights at all. We already can and do have different laws compared to other EU countries, maternity rights being one example. The EU just sets a minimum standard, we can chose to go beyond this, and the EU wouldn’t stop us (they have no way of stopping us enforcing stricter environmental laws for example). The worry people have is that if you leave the EU, you lose that enforced minimum standard, meaning future UK governments would be free to lower standards as much as they wanted.

Peanut1983 · 25/03/2019 23:41

Nobody has answered my money question? Maybe I missed it? How much do we give the eu vs how much they give us?

Acis · 25/03/2019 23:42

I've been enjoying the BTL comments in the Mail's report on this. They're frothing at the mouth at Parliament defeating the government because no-one elected them. Grin

stillpinching · 25/03/2019 23:43

trytobenicedear answered it in detail on p5.

Dottierichardson · 25/03/2019 23:43

I really hope so, it's a disaster for the country and it's already affected the economy and cost millions. The original referendum was dodgy to say the least. Democracy and government isn't about rigidity, if you make a bad decision do you go through with it or do you adjust to deal with the consequences?

AutumnCrow · 25/03/2019 23:44

If Brexit is cancelled I will never vote again

We can but dream

MeredithGrey1 · 25/03/2019 23:44

Im pretty sure maternity rights won't get taken away. Why would they do that? It would not get through. No party would win an election with that promise.

IMO this is slightly naive, the Tories have done some pretty unpopular things to disability benefit and they’re still in power. I personally don’t think maternity benefits are the best example, because I do agree they are unlikely to worsen, but it’s not at all impossible and I can understand the worry from people, especially if they’ve been directly affected by other benefit cuts.

goldengummybear · 25/03/2019 23:44

Trump wants us to Brexit so he can sell us cheap low standard food like chlorinated chicken and charge the NHS much more for medicine in exchange for a trade deal. How do you feel about that?

Acis · 25/03/2019 23:45

Im pretty sure maternity rights won't get taken away. Why would they do that? It would not get through. No party would win an election with that promise.

You don't imagine they'd be daft enough to put it in a manifesto, do you? The point is that the business interests who fund the Tory party would dearly love to get rid of all sorts of employment rights including maternity rights, and equally would love to be able to do so without those pesky treaty obligations getting in the way.

noblegiraffe · 25/03/2019 23:45

Peanut you haven’t answered the question of what we’re going to make stuff with without a manufacturing base because it all moved abroad.

Nurseornot · 25/03/2019 23:46

I would much rather Brexit be cancelled than the economy tanked and the shops emptied. Confused

YouBumder · 25/03/2019 23:47

You mark my words. Brexit being cancelled will result in a fucking shit storm that will make remainers shake in their boots.

LOLZ

longwayoff · 25/03/2019 23:47

Peanut, just have a quick google and see how much respect andrea leadsome, brexit heroine, has for maternity rights.

Peanut1983 · 25/03/2019 23:47

Thanks... so we pay more than they give us... right? Sorry I'm just a dumb leaver so you need to spell it out

AnyFucker · 25/03/2019 23:47

Full of questions aren't you, Peanut?. I see you haven't answered any yourself though.

goldengummybear · 25/03/2019 23:48

Politicians have cut child trust funds, disability allowances and allowances for kids in Sixth Form amongst other stuff. I doubt that they'll cut to US levels but most voters who have had kids (or don't plan to) won't give a shit about maternity rights. We still have zero hour contracts (not an EU policy)

PinkieTuscadero · 25/03/2019 23:48

Hmmm, yes. Not so keen to answer any questions herself.

Most curious.

DizzyPhillips · 25/03/2019 23:48

Many of our employment rights go beyond what Europe requires of us actually.

I’m an employment lawyer. I’m not worried about this. Like data protection, it is likely that we will be required to have a basic level of employment protection before Europe will trade with us.

DizzyPhillips · 25/03/2019 23:49

(I’m a remainer praying for revoke, ftr)
