AIBU to wonder what DS is doing with cigarette lighters?

So of course he is probably smoking BUT I can never smell smoke on either him or his clothes and he has literally loads of lighters - in every pocket, bag etc.

He is being quite challenging at the moment and finds it very easy to fob me off with a lie.

When I ask him he tells me all his friends smoke and that's why he has lighters. Not especially convincing but what am i missing? What is he doing with them??

I think it's quite easy not to smell of smoke if you are careful about wearing gloves, changing clothes and smoking on well ventilated places (although on mumsnet the line is that all smokers stink strongly of fags even if their last one was 3 days ago and they've showered daily since).

It seems odd that he would be so good at making sure you don't find the cigarettes or papers but leave the lighters everywhere. Do you think he's sniffing lighter fuel?

I've never smoked in my life and I used to carry around a lighter as a teen. If there is no other evidence maybe believe him for now until something else shows up?

If he’s smoking rollups they don’t smell as bad as straights.

But I’d guess weed as well or instead of rollups.

Butane is a very commonly misused substance. People inhale it. And it is very dangerous.

I smoke roll ups. I mentioned that I smoked to some moms on the school run last week and they were all shocked as they had never smelt smoke on me.

Inhaling lighter fuel is what I was afraid it might be . Maybe weed with a bong but I'm pretty sure I would have found some evidence.

None of the reasons are likely to be very positive. Is there anyone in the family who could have a chat who he may open up to?

He's having some counselling but I'm not sure how much he actually opens up.

If he is anything like I was as a teen he may just want them in case he ever has to light a fire. For similar reasons I always used to have a knife, field dressing and snare wire (only ever was used as a garrote).

Self harming by burning himself is a possibility (sorry).
