Shark v Dyson??

ILoveBray · 24/03/2019 09:12

Posting for traffic, sorry! Please help me choose a new hoover.....

My Henry has finally packed up and I have up to £350 to spend on a new vacuum.

I have a townhouse with 4 floors so it needs to be cordless and light, and can deal with multiple surfaces.

It seems that Shark or Dyson is the way to go, but which one? And which model is the best?

Thanks!

Just for a fraction of a second, I thought this thread was about baby names ...

I have this Shark www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B074SHMVNN/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?psc=1&ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

I had a Dyson cordless and would never touch a Dyson again as the design was so utterly shit (clogged on anything bigger than a small pea). It didn't fill me with any confidence in the brand.

I only paid £180 for my Shark and I've seen it reduced to that much since too.

I was à domestic cleaner and always hated clients dysons and would be happy to find a Henry. Dysons live forever it seems and Henry's are good and reliable.

I always found Dyson quite rigid in their use in the way they would have some kind of innovative fitting that other regular vacuums don't but they would be annoying to use and sometimes heavy. .
I met only one shark and I loved it it had everything you could think of. Lightweight, floor to Carpet switch, base light to see the floor clearly. Glided on hard floors and basicly drove its self in the direction you wanted on carpet. The vaccum bin removed alongside hose etc to create a handheld for stairs. It had everything's and wasn't massive or clunky. Oh and bin had a lever that pushed out the muck it collected.

Sharks are great.

Never had a Dyson, I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money on a vacuum. Recently got the Shark Lift-away and so far, so brilliant. I thought my carpet was clean. WrongShock

Dyson are shit. I have never been so disappointed

^This x1000. I treated myself to a cordless Dyson for a milestone event (waited for a year for it) and I have honestly never been so disappointed in my whole life. It reminded me of an enlarged handheld vacuum; it most certainly was not heavy duty enough to deal with a house with children. My DMIL has one and absolutely loves it, but only uses it for her stairs as she has wooden floors everywhere else.
DON'T DO IT.

I've always had Dyson's but they kept packing in so i thought I'd try a shark and i absolutely love it. I would definitely recommend them. The lift away feature is brilliant and makes doing the stairs much easier

I have a vax and a little black and Decker handheld that works great for stairs. Just in case you wanted more options. Vax was £100 from Asda and the black and decker was about £40 from Amazon.

Shark all the way. Dysons are shit. Mine kept falling to bits.

Shark lift away is great but having spent a while this morning hoovering the car would say that the quality of the attachments is a disappointment . The long angled one is really difficult to remove and I've had to use a knife to remove it. The only weakness in what is an amazing hoover and my house is filthy with resident cats and dogs.

You think your carpet/rugs are clean until you use a Shark.

I have a cordless Dyson and absolutely love it. Vacuuming has become a pleasure since buying one, as it’s so light and easy to use. I’m not surprised at the Which findings! I also love watching all the dust, dirt and pet hair accumulate in the clear drum - it’s the most satisfying thing ever Blush

I have a Dyson V10 and I think it's great, much much better than previous Dysons I've had. I was looking at a Shark too, this video helped me decide as it's a direct comparison.

Mum has the shark lift away and it is utterly rubbish if you have a dog, too many corners to get hair stuck in that require an Allen key to dismantle.

I have a dyson v8 and it's great and now so does mum and the lift away is sitting sadly in the corner.

I just bought the dyson v10. It was £450 I think. It’s cordless. Here’s the thing that is hidden until you go to their website- it runs for 6 minutes before needing to be charged for 3.5 hours. 6 minutes!!! It’s lying on the floor in front of me now having a rest. I feel bad for using it now. It seems to have less energy than me.

We got a new hoover about a month ago, I was going to get a cordless dyson until I looked at the reviews. After much deliberation I got the shark lift away, it isn’t cordless but it’s great. I love that it has a wooden floor setting too. I don’t actually miss having a cordless hoover (we had one that wasn’t a dyson but in the end it stop picking up and it wouldn’t stay charged long enough). Now I don’t have to worry about the battery running out, like a I used to, there was nothing worse than having people come over and trying to run around the entire house to find the battery has died with only half the house hoovered! I went on about mine so much my mum bought one a week later, my dad wasn’t too pleased as they had a fully functioning hoover, she just had to have one too Grin!

We had a Dyson. It was about 14 years old when it finally died last year. I asked on Mumsnet about the best vacuum cleaner and as a result bought a Shark Liftaway.

Its brilliant. I'd never buy a Dyson again

If that is right, how did it score 4 on those Which tests? That doesn't make sense! My Shark has a very good battery life (and I have two so one is always fully charged)

Always had Dyson's growing up and in our first house. Kept having issues with our last one, tried a shark and have never looked back.

The six minutes for the Dyson V10 is if you use it on max power with the motorised head. I tend to use medium power for most things and find it does a great job of hoovering and it lasts plenty long enough for me to do what I need. I use max power for things like hoovering the extractor vents.

We have a shark. It's amazing on carpets, but terrible on wood floors. It really struggles to pick up. Much preferred my Henry!
