To wonder what would it actually take to cause civil unrest in the UK

Why aren't people angrier about Brexit? Why have there been no riots? Is it because the part of society that are more likely to root want Brexit and the rest of us are too polite.

I live in France where we have been having weekly riots for the past few months because people are a bit upset they haven't got enough money. Yet in the UK not a single window has been smashed.

I'm not saying rioting is a good thing, I'm just wondering why other in other countries people get angry enough to riot but in the UK they don't.

@fenchfancy I disagree that an angry mob is what is needed to cause someone to sit up and notice. Voting is what implements change. Rioting is bullying by a vocal minority who lost the vote.

Bigfatyellow · 21/03/2019 20:50

Lol. This is why British people don't riot. Because they don't think there's anything wrong lol. Bless.

Springwalk · 21/03/2019 20:52

We express our anger with words Op, not with petrol bombs.
Everyone has their say, everyone is listened to, even if we don’t agree.
If I feel angry I can call five live and express my feelings to the country. I can email my MP or book an appointment to see her. I can start/sign a petition and force a debate in parliament.
For most of us this is enough.

France has seen tens of thousands on the streets of Paris. I was in France and I can tell you it looked huge to me. There were tanks rolling by our hotel at 3am. The yellow vests look like a nice bunch to me, so why don’t you tell us why the French are so unhappy?

Snog · 21/03/2019 20:52

There is mass political apathy in the UK.
Personally I can't understand it either. Maybe because communities don't really hang together much anymore, people don't usually even know their neighbours.

Brexit as an issue is massively divisive though, people don't necessarily want to come out aggressively against their friends and relatives. So I'm not so surprised about Brexit although as others have said if we don't leave we may start to see action from leavers who feel ignored or betrayed.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 21/03/2019 20:53

This is the final falling of the British Empire and a rising of a different empire. An EU one - except as Europeans we don't want to rule anyone. A new concept to Britain perhaps.

Bigfatyellow How ridiculous 😂 So much bullshit in such a short paragraph. There will never be an “EU empire”. The walls are, thankfully, shattering around them.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 21/03/2019 20:54

I’m proud to be part of a civilised country where rioting is rare. Lack of rioting seems to me to be a good thing.

NCforthis2019 · 21/03/2019 20:54

Maybe because people here are a bit more civilised? What does rioting do but cause mayhem and destruction?

UpTownFuck · 21/03/2019 20:55

Tulips do you know why unemployment is at a all time low? Because people are being sanctioned and having their benefits stopped not because they have found work! I don’t see many happy people who are queueing up at my work for a food bank voucher!

Frenchfancy · 21/03/2019 20:57

@springwalk fundamentally the French are unhappy that they have to drive at 80km rather than 90km and the cost of diesel was going up. That's where it all started.

In reality the French aren't unhappy, they just like to protest.

You want to look at your history book and come back to me again?

TulipsTulipsTulips · 21/03/2019 20:58

@uptown

That doesn’t make any sense. Low unemployment means more people working, so more people have found work.

Langrish · 21/03/2019 20:59

Because we haven’t left yet.
The advice from the Speaker’s office today to MPs to take taxis and not travel alone is chilling and portentous. If there are shortages following a no deal, people will quickly become frightened and frightened people are irrational, it could all get very ugly very quickly as they panic and look for someone to blame.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 21/03/2019 21:00

Tulips: This is not a country in despair.

Am in fucking despair as are loads of others. Do you watch/read the news?

The CBI and TUC combining to voice their fears. 2 completely different bedfellows but united enough in despair to complain.

anniehm · 21/03/2019 21:00

Because ultimately we would rather watch football and drink beer! I strongly feel we should cancel brexit but not enough to sit on a train for an hour to go to London!

AnyFucker · 21/03/2019 21:00

My husbands pension and our stocks and shares ISAs are at an all time high

Meh

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 21/03/2019 21:01

This is very much a country in despair!

BellaVista1540 · 21/03/2019 21:02

You live in France. None of your business what uk people think/do. Bore off trouble maker.

Langrish · 21/03/2019 21:02

“NCforthis2019

Maybe because people here are a bit more civilised? What does rioting do but cause mayhem and destruction?“

Civilised? A thin veneer, certainly, because despite austerity the majority aren’t suffering want. That veneer will disappear very quickly if their food/medicine security is under threat.

Bigfatyellow · 21/03/2019 21:02

It's worth noting that Ireland is the main one of the 27 trying to give leeway to Britain out of this. We, as your next door neighbours, see that you're fucked, and are trying to negotiate a good deal for you at the EU table. It's typically Irish, don't kick them when they're down. We don't operate like that. Unlike Britain over centuries.

shartsi · 21/03/2019 21:04

The labour shortages have resulted in a huge wage increase in my sector. No need for me to riot yet.

dementedma · 21/03/2019 21:04

because rioting gets people killed?

Op Yellowhammer goes live on Monday by the way, so rioters will face armed soldiers.Sad

Bigfatyellow · 21/03/2019 21:04

@AnyFucker
Last person I'd have expected to talk about your husband's pension. MEH.

Where's yours?

Madein1995 · 21/03/2019 21:05

big regardless of the past, we are clearly more civilized now by not rioting.

What does rioting do? Destroy businesses and livelihoods, hurt Pepe including children, has a knock on effect on supplies in shops, causes serious injury to others, overwhelms the already struggling NHS and police force, makes people feel unsafe, encourages dickheads who just want a fight to thoroughly take part and enjoy themselves. Leaves the streets in a mess, leads to parents being afraid to walk their children to school, makes people scared of going to work. Look what happened during the London riots. Riots are bloody selfish because of the fear and anarchy they cause.

OP do you fancy your windows getting smashed in? Or that of the corner shop when you're buying bread? Do you fancy seeing petrol bombs being hurled that make you feel for your safety and that of your children. Do you fancy seeing the streets becoming a mess, with people ignoring the rule of law and relishing a chance to be violent? Is that what you want.

Rioting solves bugger all. It does nothing except cause anarchy, fear and destruction. If you want to riot then go to France and join in there. I'm quite happy not risking a brick through the window or walking to work down streets of chaos. Thanks

BSintolerant · 21/03/2019 21:05

British people don't riot? My arse!

Here's a list of riots which have taken place in London alone since medieval times: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_riots_in_London

keepforgettingmyusername · 21/03/2019 21:06

The British people only get behind really important campaigns, like freeing Deirdre Barlow or giving a boat a comedy name.
