To wonder what would it actually take to cause civil unrest in the UK

Why aren't people angrier about Brexit? Why have there been no riots? Is it because the part of society that are more likely to root want Brexit and the rest of us are too polite.

I live in France where we have been having weekly riots for the past few months because people are a bit upset they haven't got enough money. Yet in the UK not a single window has been smashed.

I'm not saying rioting is a good thing, I'm just wondering why other in other countries people get angry enough to riot but in the UK they don't.

It's simple. The British have never been the oppressed, they have been the oppressor. So they really don't know how to behave now that they've shot themselves in the foot. They are literally like rabbits caught in headlights. This is new territory to them. Give them time Wink

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 21/03/2019 20:25

What’s rioting and damaging others peoples homes, cars and business’ going to achieve? Money has to be spent again to replace it all.

Jsmith99 · 21/03/2019 20:25

It all goes back to the Miners’ Strike. The British state then demonstrated the lengths it was prepared to go to in order to brutally crush dissent among the working class and protect the interests of the ruling class.

The only successful uprising against the power of the British state in the last century was the IRA’s armed struggle which resulted in the formation of an independent state.

And I expect to be banned in 3, 2, 1.

We live in a democracy that’s why. You don’t need to kick in the windows, you just need to vote.
Once this referendum result has been implemented, I am sure in the next five years or so there will be another referendum. People will have the chance to vote again, I. Full knowledge their vote will be respected and acted on.
The trust that creates regardless of your view allows a society to avoid sinking into violence and extreme behaviour.
Frances issues are different, they are sinking into another recession, they haven’t recovered from the last one. There is an air of hopelessness almost despair about France. Things will need to change there too. It is a beautiful country with so much potential, but the people are not happy at all. Macron is a disaster.

TheLastNigel · 21/03/2019 20:34

I've been thinking this. If we were French we'd all be out hurling paving slabs at the gendarmes etc...

EmeraldShamrock · 21/03/2019 20:35

I have wondered this too, it is a total catastrophe. I hope no body gets hurt but I expected peaceful regular protests week after week. Ireland was fierce for the water charges
Even if posters think leavers are weak, the level of unskilled emigration, similar to Ireland pushed people into voting leave.
I know Brexit was more about Cameron than immigration to begin with, it is a total mess.

Bigfatyellow · 21/03/2019 20:37

The Roman empire fell, the Turkish empire fell. This is the final falling of the British Empire and a rising of a different empire. An EU one - except as Europeans we don't want to rule anyone. A new concept to Britain perhaps.
Britain is the bully you had all through primary school. Now Britain is in secondary school, he realises, he's not the big boss anymore - You've France, Germany, Poland, Ireland (27 in total) who are all friends and you can't fucking bully us anymore.

AwdBovril · 21/03/2019 20:37

If we exit with no deal, I would definitely stay at home. I suspect others will be less restrained, especially once it hits home how badly they've been lied to. I'm very glad I've been prepping.

@springwalk

Great reply

And you think Britain isn't? Lol.
I love the arrogance.

Springwalk · 21/03/2019 20:40

If there is no deal then it is likely to be perishables that will suffer shortages in the short term. Things like vegetables and fresh flowers. People will adapt and carry on. I can’t see any riots happening at all.

AwdBovril · 21/03/2019 20:42

BigFatYellow - not all of us are rich. And your taunting is rather unpleasant. Do you forget, or just not care, that 48% of the vote was to remain?

AnyFucker · 21/03/2019 20:42

We are a passive lot as a whole

More interested in what the fucking Kardashians are doing than taking note of our country going the pan

IamPickleRick · 21/03/2019 20:43

Remainers are not from Tottenham.

Oh hai! Remainer from Tottenham here 👋🏻

winecigsandchoc · 21/03/2019 20:43

@Bigfatyellow dude the levels of stoicism run hundreds if not thousands of years deep in the people of this lil island

Pinkyponkcustard · 21/03/2019 20:43

Turning the WiFi off, that would cause riots

Frenchfancy · 21/03/2019 20:44

The thing is @Springwalk France isn't a mess. Unemployment is down, people are generally getting on with their lives. The gilet jaune causing the problems are actually a small group of people and every one else is getting on with life. I was in Bordeaux 3 weeks ago and there was rioting in the streets, tear gas in the air, and yet 2 streets away people were doing their shopping, drinking in bars etc.

I don't like riots. Mostly it just causes damage to innocent lives. But sometimes an angry mob is needed to make people sit up and notice. What I am interested in is why in the UK that anger is not being expressed.

Bugsymalonemumof2 · 21/03/2019 20:45

The only threats of violence I have seen have been from leave so I think if we don't leave it could kick off

Springwalk · 21/03/2019 20:45

bigfat perhaps stick to the actual facts big fat, the UK’s economy is still really strong even with all of the uncertainty. The EU is slipping into recession, even Germany. Take a look at the statistics.
It is very worrying. France in particular are in trouble. Italy is on the brink. Greece is floundering and has been for the last decade. Spain is struggling. The EU needs to focus on becoming dynamic and open to new policies if it is to survive.

Trekkingbeyond · 21/03/2019 20:46

I've been on quite a few protests and none of them have ended in trouble of any sort. I wasn't at the poll tax riots which obviously were pretty hairy. Were there riots at Greenham? Don't think so, lots of chaining to the base perimeter etc but no actual riots unless I'm mistaken.

Of course PC Keith Blakelock time was terrible but that was a hell of a long time ago.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 21/03/2019 20:47

Unemployment is at a record low in the UK and the country has just improved its rankings in the global happiness index. Many people are optimistic about the future. This is not a country in despair. Of course no one is rioting.

Trekkingbeyond · 21/03/2019 20:48

1985 to be precise, Keith Blakelock and the Tottenham riots 😪

Frenchfancy · 21/03/2019 20:49

Maybe if enough people chained themselves to the railings that would do the trick.
