Things that are crap - cunningly upsold

Have just attempted to make a sandwich using “toasty bread”... bread fell apart - but tbh it’s also rubbish as toast. So am I right in thinking that along with “naked burgers” it’s all a big con, and aibu to ask - what crappy products you have been “upsold”?

I've never even been to Centre parcs and I hate it Confused

DiscontinuedModelHusband · 21/03/2019 15:56

we live in a place with horrendous hard water.

ironing water is essential for us not to need to buy a new iron every 2 months, or have all of our clothes covered in limescale marks.

DiscontinuedModelHusband · 21/03/2019 15:59

i'm split about our dyson handheld

when it works, it's excellent
and it means we hoover much more often than we used to.

but the head clogs up with the guinea pig's hay, and it's a pain in the arse to unclog.

and it's shit on the tiled kitchen floor (it just spreads stuff around more widely).

it was a very expensive way of effectively cleaning 80% of our house.
while still needing to use the old massive heavy hoover once a month.

DiscontinuedModelHusband · 21/03/2019 16:01

and we love centre parcs

but it is overpriced

CaptainButtock · 21/03/2019 16:07

Madonna.

Saltwater sandals. Fugly.

The pizza express “light” pizzas give me the rage... they cut out of fucking hole - replace with a spoonful of rocket, and charge you for the privilege

Bread Maker: agree wholeheartedly. My mam badgered me for one years ago. The woman has used it once and myself twice. It is now a dust collecting ornament. Much prefer the old fashioned way of doing things.

Silicon Cookwear: agree it never feels fully clean but I swear by my tongs. Use them almost daily.

Cat Toys/Trees etc: much like the toddlers - the cats would rather the boxes!!!

PotterHead1985 · 21/03/2019 17:31

Slow Cooker: have to say I love my slow cooker to be honest.

Frozen Jacket Potatoes: yea I didn't really enjoy them and didn't find them quicker to cook than a regular one tbh.

Bartlebysleftshoe · 21/03/2019 18:11

This onion chopper, which my DMIL was raving about - what is wrong with a sharp knife and decent chopping board. And as if you are going to put chocolate in it after you have chopped onions.

Silicon Egg poacher, used once. (adds any other silicon bakeware to the list)

Steam mop - Mop and Bucket much better IMHO.

Marks & Spencer cashmere sweaters (or any woollen M&S item for that matter)

Expensive (for us) wine , vow not to do it again..ever, then get drawn in. We have had bottles under £10 that have been fantastic, but then for a treat or celebration more expensive ones & been disappointed & unimpressed. Some don't live up to the hype, are not that amazing and not worth the extra cost increment.

(Goodness Blush I sound very spoilt and the state of cashmere and wine really is a first world problem)

Futuroscope In France. Dcs renamed it Retroscope it was so dated.

ForalltheSaints · 21/03/2019 18:31

Madonna is not the only singer to be overrated. If you can call them singers (debatable), Little Mix and Westlife are amongst those over-sold.

LadyBahBahBah · 21/03/2019 18:33

Haven't read the full thread yet but just had to say I'm properly laughing at some of these replies Grin

Skyejuly · 21/03/2019 18:40

Make up.

itbemay1 · 21/03/2019 18:46

I'm with PP on steam mops, id rather hands and knee it with a cloth!

Rainsunshine · 21/03/2019 18:47

Every house currently on the housing market Grin

Rainsunshine · 21/03/2019 18:50

Also, lobster

PickAChew · 21/03/2019 18:50

I start my jacket potatoes in the microwave and finish them in the oven. All done complete with tasty skin in 30 minutes.

Agree about silicon backing tins. I find the spatulas useful but the tins don't give cakes the tasty crust that metal does.

longearedbat · 21/03/2019 18:51

Designer handbags and purses. I know someone who spent £1000 on a 'label' handbag. Not being an afficionado I was bemused that what looked like a pretty ordinary leather bag could possibly cost so much.
In fact, I would expand that to anything ordinary that is 5 times the price simply because of the brand, and consumers who buy them simply to impress others.

Bananasarenottheonlyfruit · 21/03/2019 18:59

I really want a bean to cup machine and I much prefer espresso to filter, but they're so expensive.

They’re really not. Higher upfront cost, maybe, but running cost is so much lower than a pod machine. And the coffee is sooooo much better too.

Luckily I have not been suckered into most of the things listed here.

I offer up Apple products. Give me an Android phone or tablet for half the price and much greater functionality.

ethelfleda · 21/03/2019 19:05

Coffe pod machines - I love our Nespresso machine for a quick cup. But when I have the time, I have a burr coffee bean grinder and a pump espresso machine. Takes practice to learn how to extract the perfect shot but so bloody worth it.

I think personalised car registration plates are a waste of money. Just, why? Most of them don’t contain an actual word anyway.

KissingInTheRain · 21/03/2019 19:06

Coffee pods - excellent. Really easy and make much more reliably good espresso coffee than most alternatives.

Center Parcs - overpriced but still good. People overlook the fact that you get really long days with kids there: no hotel bedroom stir craziness for toddlers.

Steam mops - why?

Silicon bakewear - nah.

The worst of all for up-selling though...Build-A-Bear.

BartonHollow · 21/03/2019 19:10

I love the poster who said Cadbury World ❤️

Sincerely the biggest rip off family attraction in the UK

Definitely worse than Legoland, I went to both in the same week one half term years ago and Legoland was a positive utopia in comparison

BartonHollow · 21/03/2019 19:13

I think Little Mix are great

Most reality singers can get in the sea though starting with OLLY MURS

ChodeofChodeHall · 21/03/2019 19:15

Katy Perry. There is nothing interesting or impressive about this person: I am baffled by her stratospheric success.
