Things that are crap - cunningly upsold

Have just attempted to make a sandwich using “toasty bread”... bread fell apart - but tbh it’s also rubbish as toast. So am I right in thinking that along with “naked burgers” it’s all a big con, and aibu to ask - what crappy products you have been “upsold”?

Ready Baked Jacket Potatoes - this is an actual thing?

How does that work, as you still have to heat them up/through which is either quick in the microwave (gosh, they can cook in there) or a bit slower in the oven (they can cook in there too!)

They taste oven baked but are quick as they're microwaved.
I don't like the taste of jackets microwaved from raw, the frozen ones have the lovely taste you get from oven baking the skin.

Hairless bodies
High heels
Every designer label known to wo/man
£200 runners that you still have to move your legs in to make them go (just like £40 runners)

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 21/03/2019 14:21

Agree with so many of these. I've never brought a ready-brought-but-uncooked jacket potato, but I LOVE the hard bits you get in a microwave. I just start my ordinary potato off in there and finish it in the oven. I don't find them complicated.

Expensive moisturisers.

anonymousbird · 21/03/2019 14:22

notso - I genuinely never knew such a thing existed, but thank you for the explanation re the taste - I agree microwaved from raw are not great.

notso · 21/03/2019 14:23

Center Parks is a huge oversell.
It's basically Haven but several grand more expensive and there are more performance parents and less screechy parents.

Prima watercolour paints.
Complete style over substance, though admittedly I only realised this after I started making my own paint.

anonymousbird having busy, permanently hungry teens has forced me to discover a whole world of convenience foods I'd never have considered previously!

anonymousbird · 21/03/2019 14:28

notso - I'm just a slave to my oven being able to turn itself on before we get home for my lot (and me remembering to set it!)! May just have to go and browse the frozen spud section as am now intrigued!!

PuppyMonkey · 21/03/2019 14:30

Ciabatta - tastes both slimy and dry at the same time. Bloody horrible.

HeyNannyNanny · 21/03/2019 14:31

Caviar.

Something I've been presented with at work as I'd never buy it myself but it has the same texture and taste as I'd imagine rice soaked in sardine juice would.

Im fairly confident nobody actually likes it, they just eat it for show.

Similarly oysters, which are just sea bogies.

whatashower · 21/03/2019 14:32

Guess I am going to have to be the first to say.....Brexit 😀

Sorry.

AuntieOxident · 21/03/2019 14:38

Totally agree with pod coffee machines, the coffee is meh, the pods vary from tasteless to mud and often don't taste all that fresh.
Much better to buy coffee beans, more than one style is good, grind daily in a blender/grinder, then use a low tech, cheap cafetière to brew your coffee. (Or a stovetop espresso maker if you like your coffee that way).
Voilà, you have the blend and grind of your choice, fresh tasting and much cheaper than the fancy pod machines.

I like caviar. I would never eat code roe or taramasalata - or caviar etc but then I went to a fish restaurant and we had a big sharing platter that included caviar so I tried it and it's actually nice.

I also like cooked oysters.

Foxclan · 21/03/2019 14:47

Ironing spray.... I mean what?! Why?!

IHeartMarmiteToast · 21/03/2019 14:49

Quinoa.... no need

themoomoo · 21/03/2019 14:52

I had 3 tiny pots of expensive caviar last christmas. First time I'd had "proper" stuff and it was amazingly good. Little bursts of salty fishy loveliness.

I agree wholeheartedly about swimming. Not only is it crap and gets you wet, some of the liquid in the pool is invariably urine. Or if you swim in the sea, sewage effluent.

TinselAndKnickers · 21/03/2019 14:56

Feminax and the likes - medicine that claims to "target an area"

A load of overpriced bollocks

BarkandCheese · 21/03/2019 14:56

In defence of frozen jacket potatoes, they’re not meant to be cooked in the oven. They’re not as nice as proper oven cooked ones, but better than microwaved from raw. Bung some beans and cheese on them and they’re a perfectly acceptable quick dinner for children when you’ve a got a quick turnaround between school and activities.

lillighters85 · 21/03/2019 14:57

Farrow and ball paint.

SurgeHopper · 21/03/2019 14:58

Slow cooker

TheNoodlesIncident · 21/03/2019 15:06

Water saving toilets.

Instead you have to fill a jug with water to give that extra boost or you'll never wave goodbye to that monster jobby

We have an old fashioned toilet in our outside loo and it's fantastic, dependable flushing every time!

I couldn’t agree more about Center Parcs. Ludicrously expensive and totally shit. Cycling up hills every day with two small kids in a trailer contraption is the closest thing to hell I’ve ever experienced. It’s just Butlins for the Waitrose set.

Charley50 · 21/03/2019 15:08

Cough medicine.

anonymousbird · 21/03/2019 15:13

farrow and ball paint - OMG yes. My decorator says it's the worst paint to use, she pleads with clients to get colour match at Dulux!!
