Things that are crap - cunningly upsold

MyKingdomForACaramel · 21/03/2019 12:01

Have just attempted to make a sandwich using “toasty bread”... bread fell apart - but tbh it’s also rubbish as toast. So am I right in thinking that along with “naked burgers” it’s all a big con, and aibu to ask - what crappy products you have been “upsold”?

All brands of nit shampoo - I'm sure the stuff positively encourages the evil little b*ggers!

SapphireSeptember · 23/03/2019 12:44

I like make-up. Although I think it depends on the make-up, some is really overpriced, and also how you wear it. I bung on some loud colours and a load of highlighter and I'm done in ten minutes, but the 'natural' look that takes ages and 20 different things seems like a total pain in the arse.

I also saw Pandora mentioned, I've got a lot of use out of my £40 ring! Yes it was expensive, but I wear it all the time. Some of their stuff I don't like though.

Smart phones. Fragile, short battery life and bloody expensive, and they're massive (seriously, I've seen one roughly the same size as a small paperback book.) They also don't last very long. My phone gets laughed at, but I've had it for seven years and I only need to charge it once a week, because It's a phone and all i use it for is calls and texts (although the converter and calculator are very useful.) When a phone costs more than my laptop did I think it's ridiculous!

M&S food. It's roughly the same level as Taste The Difference or Tesco Finest prices, but they are such a bad company for using palm oil. I do spend more money on food in order to avoid it, but I've given up on their food for the most part.

makingmammaries · 23/03/2019 12:55

Television. You get spoonfed whatever tendentious thing they want to serve up, and you pay a fortune for it. Got rid of it and never looked back.

MorrisZapp · 23/03/2019 13:04

My mate took her boys to Center Parcs. Loved it, but said everyone was so smiley and perfect she had to grab the kids behind a wheely bin to give them a proper bollocking.

Capitalism and the patriarchy.

Fresh pasta

Dried is perfectly fine.

😱 Smart phones are a Godsend!
I travel extensively for work, I'm in a foreign country around 45 weeks a year and I genuinely think I'd be actually lost without my phone; Google Translate is used daily, as is Google Maps. I need constantly access to my emails and as I'm going from one country to another, WhatsApp is more reliable than calls/texts. My phone has helped me look up essential info in emergencies and kept me entertained during dull moments.
Can't imagine being able to do my job as effectively without it.

sushisuperstar · 23/03/2019 16:03

I love make up too- but foundations never look as good as you are led to believe, ever. IMO.

Petlover9 · 23/03/2019 16:05

Those silicon cake “tins” for little cakes- are you saying that they are not worth buying? I wanted to get some but won’t until I hear someone’s experience with using them. Thank you

wisba · 23/03/2019 17:21

Words like “upsell” and “upcycle”, what do they even mean?

iwantatattoo · 23/03/2019 18:10

My dc's loved centerparcs holidays . It was always a good buy for us.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/03/2019 19:15

Can't remember the name of it but that moisturiser you were supposed to use daily and whilst it moisturised you it gradually built up a little bronze colour. Smelt like shiiii and didn't work.

I remember that stuff. I got darker for about three days, then it started to flake off and I looked like I had a really nasty skin disease.

sushisuperstar · 23/03/2019 19:47

That stuff made me itch 😬

powershowerforanhour · 23/03/2019 19:47

Really expensive dog food, especially if marketeted as gluten free. Dogs can digest gluten quite easily and gluten allergy/intolerance in dogs is rare. I reckon all the "lifestage" diets - you know the "for 8-8.5year old neutered male apricot coloured cockerpoos called Bailey"- are an astonishing triumph of marketing over substance too.

brizzlemint · 23/03/2019 20:09

Coffee shower 'gel' from Waitrose which turns out to be ground coffee granules in a tube. I can see why it was reduced to 20p a tube.

BartonHollow · 23/03/2019 20:09

Upsell is a sales technique were you go in to buy one thing and a sales person cons you into buying extra shit you neither wanted nor needed

EnidPrunehat · 24/03/2019 12:59

I've got a friend who has the luxury of too much money to spend on random stuff. Her kitchen is an upsold nightmare. Every task has a device regardless of whether it'll always be quicker to do the job in a more traditional, basic form. If you stay at her place you are badgered with instructions and told to use this stuff. Of which one of the worst items is a 'microwave soup mug'. Which has a stupid lid that falls off and also makes the soup tastes of plastic. Because to make the thing have any point at all you need to drink your soup from it. Allegedly.

Oh, and then there's the rice cooker that requires you to have a maths degree in order to work out the time and quantity required to cook any given portion size. It's all just shiz.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 24/03/2019 13:44

The endorphin rush supposedly achieved through intense cardio. I just ache.

Babygrey7 · 24/03/2019 16:27

But cardio gives you that mega smug feeling!

PookieDo · 24/03/2019 16:35

Starbucks and Costa.
I don’t even like coffee but end up meeting friends sometimes at their request (as they do like it) and for me the options are £3 soft drink, £3.50 Luke warm hot chocolate or one of those giant ice cream/milkshake things that are just too big make you feel a bit sick and you always end up throwing it away

GabsAlot · 24/03/2019 18:36

i agree pookie whats the bloody point its always lukewarm when i get something and i dont like espressos overpriced crap

i havemt worn make up for years now wherewas my dsis wont go out without hers and most of the time indoors aswell

Girlicorne · 24/03/2019 19:04

Rabbits. The kids begged me for them so I relented. they are messy, hay and sawdust everywhere, they cost a bloody fortune as they eat constantly and they are really antisocial! ! Since the kids realised they weren't going to get lots of daily bunny snuggles it's me that feeds them, cleans them out, sorts their snacks and hay.....

Hiddenaspie1973 · 24/03/2019 19:24

I like my steam mop (quick, easy, effective and hygenic)and silicone cake moulds, pastry brush and tongs. Cakes cook miles quicker in silicone vs tins.

The stick hoover is shit though. It sprays crumbs all over and when you power down, all that you sucked falls back out Hmm
Centerparcs. Posh Butlins and I've NEVER recovered from my disappointment about the dome. I thought it covered the entire park "Centerparcs..the British holiday the weather can't spoil". Yeah bollocks! 🤣

Anti-wrinkle creams 🤣🤣🤣that they've tested on 80 women (ages unknown) and 80% agree it's not too shite. Pathetic sample and they expect us to shell out FORTUNES based on that shitty sample/test. Nah, don't think so. But I'm alone, obviously, otherwise they wouldn't market it.
Scented sanpro. Urgh. Makes my vag itch like fuck. No ta.
Mini cucumbers. Pre chopped veg. Sooo expensive, you get less and how hard is it to chop a carrot?? (And I'm lazy!!😁😂).
Frozen avocado halves?? Are they any good?
Water filter is fantastic though!

FurrySlipperBoots · 24/03/2019 23:10

@Girlicorne

Are they neutered? They need to be if not, that should help a lot (although it takes a lot of time for their hormones to die down so don't expect an overnight fix). Do they have a decent size enclosure? If they're too confined they'll feel stressed and if they're stressed they won't be friendly. Spend time every day sitting in with them, let them come to you instead of going to pick them up, and offer treats. Fenugreek crunchies are a huge hit. Rabbits are like dogs, or children, or friends, or careers - you get out what you put in.
