To think Everyone knows what a Green Wheely Bin is for, even builders from a different town?!

Everyone knows what the green bin is for, right?!
Four bins, all different colours. OH says that it's not obvious if you're from a different town, I know that the colours vary but surely green is the same everywhere?!

We're having work done and today I found a load of broken glass in our green bin.
AIBU to think they've just been completely lazy and thoughtless and that it's not on at all? OH doesn't seem at all bothered and just made excuses for them.
I doubt he will be sorting through a mixture of rotting food and broken glass...

We have pink, black, brown and green.
They have changed the system recently and some of the bins now do a different job than they did a couple of months back. The binmen helpfully put labels on the bins which helps those of us who struggle with change.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 19/03/2019 20:54

Black for general waste, blue for paper / card, burgundy for tins / plastics, brown for garden waste. No green wheely bins here! (No kerbside glass recycling either.. that goes in with general waste or to the recycling centre.) Your builders should still have checked though.

Comefromaway · 19/03/2019 20:55

Black for general, brow for garden, red tub for cans and bottles, blue for cardboard & green caddy for food waste.

My parents (neighbouring authority) green fir general, blue for all recyclables.

Coffeeandcrumpet · 19/03/2019 20:55

We don't even have a green bin!

PigletJohn · 19/03/2019 20:56

Changing the subject, doesn't the builders quote say "and removal of builders' waste?"

If you're paying for it (the van needs to have a waste licence) they shouldn't be putting it in your bin.

They'll be trying to use your hoover, next.

SirVixofVixHall · 19/03/2019 20:57

Green is for food waste here.

cantkeepawayforever · 19/03/2019 20:57

We have three shapes of green bin....

Rectangular: recycling.
Wheely: general waste
Lidded and sealable: food

DontCallMeCharlotte · 19/03/2019 20:57

It just makes sense to me that it should be for green things... like grass/garden stuff.

No that's brown - like soil. My logic says the green bin should for recycling as in being green. We have a small green good waste bin. Obviously.

Blahdeblahbahhhhh · 19/03/2019 20:57

You would think so, but not true! We’ve moved to a different local authority three times in 10year and in each one the green bin is for something different. Currently green is for general waste. I agree it’s weird but your husband is right, they could well have been confused.

PigletJohn · 19/03/2019 20:58

just imagine the waste handlers getting cut or injured by broken glass.

and window glass does not go in the glass bottle recycling.

Myusernameismud · 19/03/2019 20:59

We have 2 bins.
Black is general waste
Blue is recycling. All recycling. None of this separating plastics and card lark.
All paper, plastic (even black plastic) bottle tops, tetrapak, foil, tins and cans go in one.

Brown is for garden waste but you pay extra for that. We've got an allotment with compost bin so never have garden waste.

winsinbin · 19/03/2019 21:01

Our green bin used to be landfill, now it’s glass. The garden waste is brown.

Gotthetshirt23 · 19/03/2019 21:01

Parcels according to Royal Mail

Whynham · 19/03/2019 21:02

We have no green bins. In fact we have no recycling bins at all. Just black for general waste.

CantYouSleepLittleBear · 19/03/2019 21:02

OP our main household waste goes in the green bin. I agree with you that it's not the logical colour, but (in my council's defence) they made them green a couple of decades ago, before recycling was as widespread as it is now. At the time there was only one bin and it was green to blend in with the gardens. They've subsequently introduced other colours for other purposes.

Tote · 19/03/2019 21:02

plastic and cans

SapatSea · 19/03/2019 21:03

In our previous house next door were having their house renovated (and had bu**ered off for the duration of the build. Their builders regularly put stuff in our green bin, after politely asking them not to do it several times I finally snapped when they managed to put a bathroom sink and pedestal in it!

Bonkerz · 19/03/2019 21:03

We only have grey lid bin general waste and blue lid bin all recycling

katseyes7 · 19/03/2019 21:04

No, it depends where you live. My friend lives seven miles away from me and theirs are totally different. Our ordinary waste bin is green, hers is black. Our recycling bin is brown, hers is green.

ToastyFingers · 19/03/2019 21:04

We don't have a green bin and no wheelie bin at all.

Ours are:

Black bin - glass
Orange sack - cardboard
Blue sack - cans/plastics
White sack - paper
Brown bin - food
Purple bin liner - absorbants
Clear bin liner - non recyclable waste.

I long for a wheelie bin.

Dragonglass · 19/03/2019 21:04

We have

green - recycling (paper, card, plastic, glass, cans, foil)
green bag - garden waste
brown - everything else

Gronky · 19/03/2019 21:04

At my home in the 90s, my one wheelie bin was green (prior to that, I had a dustbin). Then, a blue bin was added for recyclables and a brown one for garden waste. The brown one was discontinued a number of years later (and I cursed the council every time I was forced to clean leaves and twigs out of my car, even with a painter's sheet).

I currently have a black bin for general waste and a blue one for recyclables (which seems to be rejected no matter how closely I follow the council guide on how to fill it or if I improvise different combinations, so it's currently purely ornamental).

mrslupin · 19/03/2019 21:05

Garden bins are brown here general waste is green

Babynut1 · 19/03/2019 21:06

I wouldn’t have a clue. We don’t have wheely bins here!

Smileymoon · 19/03/2019 21:07

Our green bin is for recycling so plastics, paper, glass.
I'd put broken glass in the black bin which is for general waste.
