Everyone knows what the green bin is for, right?!
Four bins, all different colours. OH says that it's not obvious if you're from a different town, I know that the colours vary but surely green is the same everywhere?!

We're having work done and today I found a load of broken glass in our green bin.
AIBU to think they've just been completely lazy and thoughtless and that it's not on at all? OH doesn't seem at all bothered and just made excuses for them.
I doubt he will be sorting through a mixture of rotting food and broken glass...

We just moved into a new county. Old green bin was for garden and food waste, new green bin is for all recycling - cans, bottles, paper etc.

So no, it’s not obvious.

Saythatonemoretime · 19/03/2019 20:36

IS for general waste, stupid phone

viccat · 19/03/2019 20:36

Ours are all green with different colour lids... Black lid for general (non-recyclable) waste, blue lid for recycling (paper/glass/plastics) and green lid for food and garden waste.

The next borough over has just one big bin and then 3 or 4 small boxes for various recycling, food etc. waste.

slipperywhensparticus · 19/03/2019 20:37

Grey rubbish green recycling you can buy a brown for garden waste

cochineal7 · 19/03/2019 20:37

We have no green bins. Blue for food waste, brown for garden cuttings and a regular black bin for the rest. Recycling goes in special bags (admittedly greenish) or orange bins. Council next to ours have different colours though.

EmeraldShamrock · 19/03/2019 20:38

I always believed they were the same everywhere Blush
I have 3, black for general, green mixed recycling, brown food and garden waste.

BunsOfAnarchy · 19/03/2019 20:39

Our green bin is for recycling
Brown is for garden waste.
Grey for general

I always refer to the brown bin as the green bin as the greenery goes in there Grin my DH hates it lol.

C0untDucku1a · 19/03/2019 20:40

We have burgandy for general waste, grey for recycling and brown for garden waste.

PandaCorn · 19/03/2019 20:42

So much variation! And apparently we're in the minority with green being for garden/food waste.
Burgundy for cans and glass
Beige for paper/card
And black for general waste.

Other than the burgundy it all just seemed so logical.
Oh well, thanks everyone.

Our green is for general waste, brown for garden stuff and blue for recycling.

TeacupDrama · 19/03/2019 20:44

here green bins for normal waste ( ie once upon a time all bins were green)
they introduced bins for recycling they are dark blue
later they introduced small glass bins they are grey
finally they introduced food waste bins they are tiny green bins

without lifting lids and closely inspecting contents I would have no idea what colour bin was for what in another area

Lavendersquare · 19/03/2019 20:45

Green bin = general non recyclable
Green bin with orange lid = garden waste

Thinking about it the green bin would be more suited to garden waste 🤔

PandaCorn · 19/03/2019 20:46

Yes! It just makes sense!

Green is general here, grey is recycling. My mum has brown for recycling, grey for general and green for garden

soulrider · 19/03/2019 20:47

Ours used to be black/grey for general, blue for glass, green for plastic and cardboard and brown for garden waste. But then they turned the black/grey ones into garden waste and now general waste is red.

TheDarkPassenger · 19/03/2019 20:48

Here we have 2 bins. Black is general green is recycling. We don’t have anymore. I would assume your green was recycling too and I wouldn’t have a clue about the other

MongerTruffle · 19/03/2019 20:48

Ours are:
Black - general waste
Green - recycling
Brown - garden waste
Grey - food waste

bridgetreilly · 19/03/2019 20:49

Green: general waste
Blue: recycling
Brown: garden waste

There is no national standardisation of wheelie bins. I blame the patriarchy!

Travellinghappy · 19/03/2019 20:49

Our green bins are for glass, paper, card and plastic. Brown is garden waste and black for ordinary rubbish. Food waste goes in a small kerbside caddy. Totally different in the next county.

Haffdonga · 19/03/2019 20:49

No such thing as a green bin in these parts.

Black bin for general waste.
Black box for recyclables and blue plastic bag for papers. The boxes are too small. The bags blow away down the street. Our council are Torycheapskates,

tabulahrasa · 19/03/2019 20:50

Green is food waste
Blue is recycling
Brown is garden waste
Grey (looks black to me) is landfill.

Corneliusmurphy · 19/03/2019 20:50

All our normal bins are green! Dark green rubbish, light green recycling (all of it) and a small dark green one for food (which they never empty 🙄)
There’s a separate brown bin collection service for garden waste that you have to pay for.

QueenOfTheSandals · 19/03/2019 20:50

Our green bin is for cans and plastic. Food and garden waste is in the brown bin of course!

TeacupDrama · 19/03/2019 20:51

I think all the first wheelie bins were black or green so they didn't look too obvious in gardens next to hedges because not that long ago councils(15 years maybe) only collected 1 bin of everything,

So as councils started doing recycling etc they had to choose a different colour for bins/ boxes or whatever just adding a new bin rather than rearranging colours

dementedma · 19/03/2019 20:51

it would make sense to standardise wouldn't it? We have:
Green - plastic and cans (used to be garden waste which made sense)
Black - paper and card
Brown - garden and food waste
Blue - landfill.

No bin for glass
