I'm also sure after watching the whole series that they are 100% not involved

They too are victims. As are the twins. Young teens by now, they must have been really affected by all this over the years too.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 21/03/2019 11:46

Diana, I think a lot of those questions aren’t really going to bring anyone closer to finding the poor child, that’s probably why they weren’t asked.

Why wasn’t the door locked? Well a lot of people don’t lock their doors. You see it all the time on here. Poor little Alesha MacPhail‘s grandmother didn’t lock her door.

Why did their friend check? He was checking on his own children and popped in to MM as well. Of course he was a friend, he was part of their holiday party.

I think they are completely innocent and not only victims of their daughters abduction but police inadequacies as well. It’s very sad Sad

Cora1942 · 26/03/2019 06:20

Thing is they were checking if the children were awake. They didnt think they would not be there. I have babysat before and parent asked me not to open bedroom door as the children would wake up. Sound monitor only. Matt listened and couldnt hear any crying or wakeful children.
Agree its tragic , he heard a noise was the abductor in the apartment.
The poor parents, what hell to not only loose your daughter but to be aware the police are not looking for her.

SeaWitchly · 26/03/2019 07:20

Nettlescoop I agree that Peter Hyatt's analysis of the McCann interview was fascinating and well worth a watch.
It clarified and articulated many of the thoughts and feelings I had about this couple when I had previously watched their interviews. I felt that the McCanns were too focused on their own pain and the unfairness of the situation as it affected them rather than consideration regarding what Madeleine might be experiencing or suffering. The couple also often appeared rather cold and detached in my opinion... I thought this analysis had some interesting thoughts around why this might be.

RedHelenB · 26/03/2019 07:41

Cora1942 it's ridiculous to say he heard the abductor!

profumoaffair · 26/03/2019 07:47

I think the Netflix series does a very good job of presenting the parent's case, but it does leave a lot of very valid questions unanswered.

This series of podcasts from Australia's Nine Network seems a bit more probing

This sums up my feelings also. I kept thinking "ah, this is going somewhere" and expecting certain questions to be posed that any decent investigative documentary maker would have asked - and they never came. Time and time again. The difference between this and, say, The Staircase, is enormous in that respect.

I'm afraid I came away thinking the makers were not interested in presenting a truly balanced investigative documentary but presenting one side in particular.

Bluewall · 26/03/2019 08:15

One thing I wondered was in the first episode I think a witness said they heard Kate shouting "The ba$tards have taken her" just after she went missing.

Why would she say that? Surely your first thought would be she had wandered off and start searching the garden , hotel surrounding streets (which people were doing)

Who did she think had taken her ?
That wasn't commented on.

ShatnersWigIsActuallyAMammoth · 26/03/2019 08:18

@Bluewall Don't go there, you'll get the thread deleted!

Bluewall · 26/03/2019 08:20

O sorry. It was just something that has stuck in my head I thought would be answered in another episode or something.

KOKOtiltomorrow · 26/03/2019 08:29

@Bluewall. Read Jane Tanners transcript. She was there and stated Kate's first reaction was just that Madeline was gone- nothing about her "being taken".

ShatnersWigIsActuallyAMammoth · 26/03/2019 08:35

@KOKO We really shouldn't discuss the case per se or the thread will be pulled but there are witnesses who recall Kate saying "they've taken her" when she came back to the restaurant

SevenSeasofRye · 26/03/2019 10:43

This is very interesting. Someone else posted it, think it was on another thread.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 26/03/2019 10:47

I’ve read all the conspiracy theories and comments and never believed them. This documentary just reinforces my belief that these are two parents who have suffered the most terrible loss. I think in the early days they were not media savvy and I think Jerry McCann took control as much as he could over all of this because it helped him to be doing something active to find his daughter.

I feel for them both and wish beyond anything they could get an answer about their daughter,

happyhillock · 26/03/2019 10:55

I don't feel sorry for them, i feel more sorry for Madeline what is happening to her or what has happened to her, don't think we'll ever know.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 26/03/2019 11:06

I would hope that my sadness for Madeleine would go without saying.

SeaWitchly · 26/03/2019 11:50

I also don't feel sorry for them... and this is strange for me as I am usually a sensitive and empathetic person and expect that I would feel great compassion for parents in this awful circumstance.

But the McCanns leave me cold I must admit. And the video Seven Seas has posted explained my feelings and reactions best.

I do however feel great compassion for Madeleine... and her two younger siblings.

justmyview · 26/03/2019 12:04

I worry that the press are respecting the privacy of the twin siblings now because they're children, but they'll be regarded as "fair game" when they reach 16 / 18 and the press will follow them around to keep the story alive

LuvSmallDogs · 26/03/2019 12:22

I wasn’t particularly one way or the other on the McCanns before this series. Now I think it’s really quite unlikely they actively hurt Madeline at all. I think their actions were dim to the point of negligence - which made people take against them, and put the McCanns on the defensive.

SevenSeasofRye · 26/03/2019 12:30

I believed the McCanns were probably responsible until I watched documentary. I changed my mind after watching it. However, now i have listened to the link above I have changed my mind back! I also heard someone interviewed on the radio who is an expert in analysing criminal cases who was incredibly convincing about the McCann's guilt. I think it was this lady:

TruffleShuffles · 26/03/2019 12:40

I thought the documentary did a lot of good for the McCanns even though they wanted nothing to do with it, nearly every comment on social media has said even though they initially thought they had something to do with the disappearance after seeing the documentary they were convinced that they didn’t.

I think they were poorly advised over the PR handling of the disappearance early on. I understand that a lot of it was to keep interest in the case but it came across as too polished and made the McCanns appear cold and uncaring, everyone who said they met the McCanns away from the cameras commented on how distressed Kate was.

I found the involvement of Brian Kennedy extremely bizarre particularly his son who seemed to think he was in some sort of movie.

flitwit99 · 26/03/2019 13:07

Me too. I wonder how much money he actually put in. And why. Is he just a genuinely nice guy? I hope so.

IamPickleRick · 26/03/2019 13:14

The thing is that I can totally relate to how they acted at the start. The police weren’t doing what the McC’s thought was the correct procedure or how it would have gone if it had happened in the U.K. and at some points were even hindering the search. Would I call my MP? The Daily Fail? Anyone I had ever met and any string that I could pull that could possibly get the case more exposure, better policing and find my daughter - of course! But they seemed mostly indignant that someone had dared do this to them and while I can understand that too, as it is a total violation, I can also see how it could have come over as cold.

Gerry’s mother even says “he saves people on a daily basis and how does he get repaid? Someone steals his kid”. When really it should have been concern for poor Madeleine and what she could be going through.

I don’t think they did it at all. They were relaxed on holiday and let their guards down.

This is a really compelling analysis

CustardySergeant · 26/03/2019 19:07

I just watched the video you linked to profumoaffair and it certainly is compelling. When I saw how long the video was, I didn't think I would watch it all, or certainly not all in one go, but it was the most riveting and fascinating video I've ever seen. It certainly changed my mind about the case, so thank you very much for the link.
