To think the woman was right to change the baby..

...on the bus.

Little back story.. the bus service in question is 1hour48 end to end. The service only runs once per hour so if you get off its a hour until the next one.

Woman and tiny baby get on the bus and sit in the designated buggy park bit. 5mins into the journey it becomes very apparent baby has pooed. The baby is in the laydown carry cot part of the pushchair, quite deep, youd have to peer in to see much of him. The woman quickly changes her son and double bags the nappy and puts that in her changing bag. The window is open + the smell is gone in a matter of minutes.

Another woman on the bus got quite aggressive towards her and said shes a vile creature for changing a baby on the bus and she should have got off the bus or waited until she got home. The mum stated that she was as efficient as possible and if she left him he'd be sore and the bus would continue to smell for another hour n 15mins. The other lady replied "its not raining you coulda got off and waited for the next bus".

Aibu to think the woman did no wrong.. the poor kid needed changing, she did it in a dignified way and shouldnt be expected to stand in the cold and almost darkness for a hour...

I think what she did was not a problem and I would be really saddened to think that anyone in that situation felt they had to get off the bus. Goodness knows other people do many many things that I find unpleasant, but wouldn't dream of mentioning or complaining about.

Drogosnextwife · 18/03/2019 19:02

Anyone who thinks the woman wbu is being a knob. No baby should be left for that long in a dirty nappy, also what if she got off the bus and there was nowhere to change her baby, should she just do it out Olin the cold? Sure she could give her hands a wipe with wipes and gel. You have no idea what people have been touching before they got on a bus, a babies shitty nappy is the least of your worries.

MadameButterface · 18/03/2019 19:03

mardy arse woman should have counted herself lucky if that was the most disgusting thing she saw or smelt on a bus that day. and totally agree that she wouldn't have started on a bloke for doing the exact same thing.

WeWantJustice · 18/03/2019 19:03

You know what, people eat stinky sandwiches on public transport. they fart, they yawn and breathe halitosis over everyone else, they sing along to their dreadful music, they manspread, they put their bags on the seat next to them so no one can sit down - the list of tiresome behaviour people engage in on public transport, is endless.

I have literally never heard anyone challenge any bad behaviour except that of children, teenagers or mothers.

Adult males or people who don't have kids in tow, just never have the problem of having to fend off criticism of their behaviour on buses, however bad it is. Women with babies or kids OTOH, are fair game for any random bully to pull them up on any little thing.

BaaBaaBaaMoo · 18/03/2019 19:03

I hope someone stood up for the lady changing the baby.

MRex · 18/03/2019 19:04

Of course she needed to change the baby in this situation, a baby can't spend that long in a poo nappy nor be standing in the rain for an hour. A minute to change versus an hour and a half of smell I'd definitely prefer the minute.

MamaLovesMango · 18/03/2019 19:06

I would’ve helped her by passing her stuff and putting it away for her. Although she sounds like she’s got it down to a fine art! I had still have a wiggly one. She did nothing wrong and I would’ve had to do the same as although my youngest isn’t bothered by her poo, if she sits in it longer that 10 minutes she gets really sore.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/03/2019 19:06

Wouldn't bother me if someone efficiently changed a baby.

As long as there wasn't diarrhoea flung all over, I'd rather the baby was comfy.

blackteasplease · 18/03/2019 19:06

Our buses sometimes smell like a mixture of MacDonalds, cannabis and BO. So baby poo would not be a problem!

Of course the Mum did the right thing in the circs.

MRex · 18/03/2019 19:07

It's a shame if nobody stood up for her, people obviously needed explanations of why changing the baby was better.

Gingernut83 · 18/03/2019 19:07

Oh I love those paninis though - I always call it elemental cheese 😂 🧀

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/03/2019 19:11

I once scoffed one before going to an interview and I didn’t realise that there was cheese all up the sleeve of my suit jacket. (Still got the job though).

Thatsnotmyotter · 18/03/2019 19:12

I’m unsure why a tiny baby would be smelly? Milk poo is largely very inoffensive in my experience. But the baby obviously still needed changing! She did the only sensible thing!

Sitdownstandup · 18/03/2019 19:13

Perfectly fine for her to change the baby in that scenario. Other woman was being a dicksniff.

Drogosnextwife · 18/03/2019 19:14

Dogs shit in the street everyday and people pick it up in bags and walk along swinging it about at their side, I've never once witnessed someone taking out hand gel to give their hands a clean after it!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 18/03/2019 19:15

With the bus being so infrequent I think she was fine to do that. If it was my neck of the woods (inner city, billions of buses) I would have agreed she should have got off the bus.

Did you stand up for her, OP?

Darkstar4855 · 18/03/2019 19:19

I wouldn’t have a problem with it - she did it in the pram not on the seat and a bagged up nappy will be less smelly than an unchanged nappy. I hope someone stood up for her and gave her a bit of support.

Poppins2016 · 18/03/2019 19:20

I would have done exactly the same thing (delaying getting home with a newborn for the sake of a discrete nappy change seems ridiculous).

Ribbonsonabox · 18/03/2019 19:23

YANBU! that poor baby wouldve had to sit in it's own poo for nearly two hours with everyone listening to it crying or they would have had to stand in the cold for an hour....
Idve changed my baby in those circumstances too... it's not ideal but it's the best decision I think.

Orangecookie · 18/03/2019 19:24

Totally fine. I’ve changed my baby on a train and on a plane before. Believe me I’d have waited if I could! Both times so discreet no one noticed.

Those kinds of people really annoy me.

Cheby · 18/03/2019 19:36

She WNBU. And I’d hazard a guess that... anyone who says they would get off a bus with a tiny baby, at the end of the day when it’s nearly dark (as in the OP), and therefore quite possibly near the baby’s bedtime, then wait in the cold (and pouring rain if you’re anywhere near me today!) with said tiny baby, for an HOUR for the next bus...either doesn’t have children or has forgotten the baby stage entirely.

A smelly nappy isn’t great on a stuffy bus!

Can always get off the bus then...

EssentialHummus · 18/03/2019 19:43

Fine in the circs I think - it probably smelled less once she'd done it! I have vivid memories though of the couple who changed their baby on the easyJet shuttle bus between the plane and the terminal...

MadameButterface · 18/03/2019 19:44

"Women with babies or kids OTOH, are fair game for any random bully to pull them up on any little thing."

I so agree with this. It's like women with small dc bear the brunt of everyone's collective stored resentment at public bad behaviour. everything they'd like to say to the six foot no necked knuckle draggers wandering along stinking of skunk, hoiking up globs of lung butter and scratching their bollocks with their hands down the front of their grey marl trackie bs while their akita shits all over the pavement, but dare not. women with small kids get it in the neck because they know we're not going to turn round and twat them in the face.
