I'm in a very dog friendly cafe with my well behaved dog. Who is on a lead and has spent 99% of the time under the table. She ventured out from under the table and sat between our table and the next table sniffing the floor.

Bloke at the next table jumped up, got right in my face and told me in a very aggressive manner to stop my dog sniffing round his table. I don't think she was but said sorry and pulled her under my table. He carried on and said it was the second time (it wasn't, though we had to walk past them at one point so he may have meant that).

He carried on ranting at which point I told him there was no need to be so aggressive and that he could have mentioned it in a far nicer manner. Which shut him up.

Photo so you can see the space dog had ventured into. Dog wasn't touching the woman's purple coat. Small spaniel who was sat in the middle of that space.

Hes an idiot and hates dogs. His loss. I was walking my dog the other day and an annoying dog I know jumped up at me repeatedly with very muddy paws and I got covered in mud. The owner just stood there. I was so angry and shouted at man and dog which was unreasonable but the owner never controls the dog and we were in a mud pit in the woods! I stormed off but later bumped into him and he did actually say sorry! I love dogs, just the owners sometimes who are so rude! You sound lovely and your dog looks gorgeous!

If a spaniel came over to my table while I was eating it would literally make my day. I’m a dog groomer, I own a Lab...I am incredibly biased.
His loss. For what it’s worth, my Lab is forever hungry (we don’t feed him, at least that is what he tells people whilst eyeing up their food).
We try, as you have, to keep him next to us as best as we can but sometimes he will continue to try to stretch out or go to the end of his lead and I quickly coax him back. He is 9. No one has ever complained in his entire life.
This guy is a nutter. I’m sensing it wasn’t about the dog...

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER 😊 As a dog groomer I can confirm this is 100% true! I’ve groomed many staffies, boxers, GSD’s, Dobermans etc but I’ve only ever been bitten by a westie. (Should also say I also groom some lovely westies too)

@LouH1981, I adore Staffies. I'm sure there are Staffies who are dodgy because of their owners, but I've yet to meet one who isn't utterly adorable. Their lovely smiley faces melt my heart!

The man was a rude idiot. Don’t go in a do friendly cafe ifyou don’t like dogs.

However as someone wary of dogs I find the following sad attitudes, to not realise that people have fears/phobias without being bad people.

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those that love dogs and wrong 'uns.

I used to be relaxed around dogs now I am very wary. It changed when I came across a bad owner, our next door neighbour when I was 14. He had three dogs and exercised them on the field behind our house. I would walk home from school to find one or two outside the front door barking. Neighbour said they were guarding the house - from me, shout and it will go away. I know all dogs can be dangerous or good natured but a Doberman pins her, Rottweiler and German Shepard are pretty scary.

@Ravenesque Definitely! In fact the only problem I’ve ever had with them is that they want too many cuddles. Just the sweetest of dogs.

I don’t get all this pearl-clutching over dogs in food establishments. Ok, I can understand they need to be on the floor and not sitting up at the tables. But it isn’t as if they’re actually in the food prep areas. Anyone would think they’re out the back cutting the sandwiches the way some people carry on. I see no difference between a dog walking across the floor and a person in dirty, germ-ridden shoes doing the same.

We met another spaniel while out for a walk today and dogs owner was shouting at him to sit and stay and dog was ignoring him. Flustered owner was shouting "don't pretend you can't hear me with those ears".

YANBU and he's deeply unpleasant and rude.
