Obvious addict came to my door.

I’m sorry I really had no idea where to post this.

Earlier this evening a (sadly) obvious drug addict was knocking on my door and I ignored her till she came into my garden and gave me story about her wallet being lost, train fare etc.

I told her in no uncertain terms I couldn’t help and to try the village shop. I’ve absolutely no idea why I said that.

I think the poor woman was just chancing her luck but at the same time it’s quite a stretch to reach my door. We are in an old cottage not on a street so the whole thing unnerved me a bit. Also i never lock the house or car doors (sleepy village and as I said not on the road) so it’s made me re-evaluate that.

I feel a bit silly to be a bit worried by the whole thing not least because it’s been just me and my infant children all weekend.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Some posters have said that some drug addicts are easy to spot.

Some posters have said they think certain addictions have certain physical traits and that they're sensitive to those and recognise them easily when out and about.

I don't think anyone has said they can literally spot everyone in their vicinity who's addicted to anything at all.

Personally i know what certain signs are but because i take very little notice of people around me i wouldn't say i 'spot' addicts at all i've walked past family members and not even noticed them!

I don't think I've ever seen a drug addict, where do you all live?!

So you’ve never left the place you live and visited any major city then? Hmm.

It does sound like a scam and I would be very wary OP. Definitely keep your doors locked from now on, take it as a wake up call.

I think she might have been casing you, checking if you were home with a story ready to go in case you were there. If you hadn't answered she might have tried to get into your car or house.

I agree to warn your neighbors. Im guessing a few of them had a similar visit before or after you.

All I'm doing is pointing out that a) not all addicts steal b) not all addicts look like addicts c) that using words like junkie or smack heads isn't nice

A and B are pointless because absolutely nobody said anything of the sort. I agree with you on C though but then again who are we to dictate or preach to anyone else especially when it’s nothing to do with the OPs issue.

Where do you live @outpinked ? I'm moving there! No I'm not asking so I can case your joint!

This con is so common here that the police have posted warnings in community groups.
