Jeans in an interview?

Posting here for traffic and wisdom. I have an interview for a manager position at a big supermarket next week. It's the final interview as I got through the last 2 rounds.
It's with the Area manager and we've spoken on the phone, he's super nice and it was a relaxed chat about the job. He gave me the date, time, store etc and said he'd look forward to meeting me so we can talk some more about the role.
I've looked online at the company and interview reviews and it seems once you get to this part of the process it's a walk around the store and an informal type interview. So I was so wondering if it would be ok to wear my black skinny jeans with my new smart shirt, suit jacket and smart ankle boots? I've tried the outfit on with trousers but the jeans look nicer and smarter and I feel more comfortable in them so therefore I think I'll be more confident.

WWYD? Are black jeans a definite no no and should I head to the shops to find nicer pair of trousers instead?

I wouldn't think jeans were appropriated and would think a pair of smart black trousers would be better.

The jeans are a definite no- especially for a senior role. You'll get loads of wear out of a good pair of black trousers anyway.

The industry I work in it would be fine because if you’re too dressed up you look like you don’t understand the job.

I wouldn't. Trousers will do but jeans are an obvious no. They'll definitely notice.

For some roles absolutely wouldn’t be an issue.

I don’t think for the role in question it’s a good idea, unless they don’t look particularly jeans like.

I think trousers are best

If you feel a bit 'plsin' as I sometimes do going to an interview - there's no need to be in black and white. A nice bright blouse or shirt, can look smart. You can add some colour with scarves, earrings etc. Or a nice tunic dress - thats comfier, and I tend to think looks more colourful. Match with a smart black jacket, tights and either boots or heels, and it looks good. Or even a black pencil skirt if you don't want trousers.

But I really wouldn't say jeans, sorry. Even wearing a coloured blazer eg pink, or the new style with rucked up sleeves etc, while it looks nice, is more suited for eg a barmaid interview than a manager role.

In some industries and companies, jeans at an interview would be an absolute non-issue. I wouldn’t wear them in this case, but the idea of it being a blanket rule is out of date.

YABU. They will absolutely notice, no matter how smart they are. What they think of it, you don’t know. But I wouldn’t take the gamble of potentially losing a job for not looking like I’d made enough effort*.
*I realise not every sector, but certainly mine!

Please don't. When it is difficult to decide between 2 candidates, things like this can make all the difference to your chances.

I have worn black skinny jeans to my last 6 interviews (I interviewed a lot last year) and I got all the jobs I turned down 5 of them. This is not a stealth boast but I think it depends on what you team them with. I wore very smart tops and shoes. These were jobs within the education sector higher and secondary education.

Complete no no, especially for a management role. I used to work in retail and the majority of people interviewing for floor staff positions rarely even wore jeans, though one turned up in tracksuit bottoms once.

seriously? Given how strict the secondary sector is on student uniforms and staff dress I'm struggling to believe this

I would say ok for a Sales Assistant job but definitely not a manger job. Make sure you can walk in the boots too, I hate interviewees tottering behind me in heels so high they can't walk in them

If you were going for a job at say, Google or a recording studio I would say yes. But if unsure, l would err on tge side of caution, but it’s not a blanket no-no.

Interestingly, I have jeans that cost more than my black business trousers or work skirts, so you coukd argue it depends on the style of jeans too.

Don't risk it. In some sectors, jeans are fine for interviews but not for this. Buy a new pair of black trousers - even if they're not as nice as the skinny jeans it'll be a safer choice.

I agree with most of the PP, I’d personally never wear jeans for an interview. I always think it’s better to be over dressed than ‘under dressed’ in these situations, the panel will notice the jeans. I say this as somebody who works in HR and interviews a lot.

However, I wouldn’t turn somebody down solely on the fact they wore black jeans.

OP - next do some lovely tailored trousers. I’d recommend H&M too although their sizes are all over the place!
