Are gun laws U?

Backwoodsgirl · 16/03/2019 10:59

In light of recent attacks in NZ, the increase in knife and gun crime in the UK, shootings in the US and France. What do people think are reasonable options for weapons related laws?

It's clear that none on the current system around the world are perfect.

I am a Brit in the USA, and a gun owner, I also have a concealed carry permit. and I am interested to see what people see as reasonable.

“Democracy and liberty sometimes can’t be defended at the ballot box, and must sometimes be upheld with screeching lead.”
Oh, phew, you’re joking. For a scary moment there I thought you were serious!

BloodMeridian · 18/03/2019 17:11

We can, you know. And we do, frequently. when? UK law is firmly on the side of criminals.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 18/03/2019 17:13

Democracy and liberty sometimes can’t be defended at the ballot box, and must sometimes be upheld with screeching lead

So your supporting a citizens right to shoot policemen if they feel their liberty is being affected? So essentially anarchy? Their just aren't the words....

Walkingdeadfangirl · 18/03/2019 17:16

UK law is firmly on the side of criminals
So you think the public should just go out and shoot everyone you think is a criminal?

Tiscold · 18/03/2019 17:31

Err the old guy who killed a burguler wiyh his own weapon didn't face charges.

BertrandRussell · 18/03/2019 17:34

“UK law is firmly on the side of criminals.”

Bollocks.

DGRossetti · 18/03/2019 17:42

Err the old guy who killed a burguler wiyh his own weapon didn't face charges.

Bloody facts again ... I was enjoying the flow of tabloid headlines ...

BloodMeridian · 18/03/2019 17:49

Not bollocks at all, just look at London for example, moped riding criminals often armed with acid have free reign to terrorise law abiding criminals.

BloodMeridian · 18/03/2019 17:56

*law abiding citizens

JassyRadlett · 18/03/2019 17:56

Be sure. They do. Fully automatic, no, semi - absolutely.

If they require a semi to kill animals for food, then they are worryingly unskilled with an ordinary rifle or shotgun, and probably shouldn’t be allowed a semi based on that alone.

I grew up on the land in Australia, have shot animals for food, and am very comfortable around guns. I am also very comfortable with Australian and British gun laws.

The ‘I’m happy for lots of people to die unnecessarily so it’s slightly easier or exciting for me to pursue my hobbies or hunt my food’ minority don’t make much sense to me.

dreichuplands · 18/03/2019 18:01

blood policing levels are a totally different conversation and nothing would be improved for the moped riders having guns.
I had training on how to avoid car jacking at gun point, no sane person would want to import that problem to the UK.

Mordred · 18/03/2019 18:03

Just as a point of interest, these are the sorts of guns available in a typical British gun shop (in Derby in this case):

www.thecountryman.com/

No handguns except ridiculously long-barrelled ones.

Shotguns are reasonably easy to get a licence for, but you will be visited by Police who will check your gun storage arrangements and also check your medical background for mental health problems.

For rifles etc you must show a reason to own one - eg member of a shooting club, work related (eg gamekeeper, deer stalker).

BertrandRussell · 18/03/2019 18:25

“just look at London for example, moped riding criminals often armed with acid have free reign to terrorise law abiding criminals.”

More bollocks.

BlackPrism · 18/03/2019 18:39

The UK laws are fine - most of our minor gun crime is caused by people who have obtained them illegally anyway, the US lets people walk into supermarkets and buy a machine gun to shoot up a school.... utterly crazy with mental health and Alt-Right aggression as it is.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 18/03/2019 18:43

just look at London for example, moped riding criminals often armed with acid have free reign to terrorise law abiding criminals

Dashcam video of London Police chasing moped riding criminals Nov 2018. Just watch and say how exactly they have free reign?

nometal · 18/03/2019 18:47

"the US lets people walk into supermarkets and buy a machine gun to shoot up a school.... utterly crazy with mental health and Alt-Right aggression as it is."

Nonsense. Even in the US, machine guns are quite difficult to get hold of.

lyralalala · 18/03/2019 18:50

Not bollocks at all, just look at London for example, moped riding criminals often armed with acid have free reign to terrorise law abiding criminals.

Actually now you’ve said that I’ve changed my mind. We should arm more people as obviously any old Tom, Dick or Mary with a gun shooting at a moving moped will clearly solve that issue in a moment...

DGRossetti · 18/03/2019 18:52

Not bollocks at all, just look at London for example, moped riding criminals often armed with acid have free reign to terrorise law abiding criminals.

Not quite sure what that's got to do with gun laws ? Are you suggesting they should have guns instead ?

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 18/03/2019 18:55

Nonsense. Even in the US, machine guns are quite difficult to get hold of.

Except, thanks to Bump stocks, that’s not exactly true. As the mass slaughter relatively recently in Vegas shows.

BlackPrism · 18/03/2019 18:55

I also don't understand how you feel safer WITH a gun (stop calling them 'firearms' you own a goddamn gun, it sounds so stupid like you think you're a professional).
I am 23 so the law changed in the UK when I was 1 year old and other than clay pigeon shooting and military I have never seen a gun. I've never held a handgun or really seen one off of TV. I feel very safe and thank my elders for giving me a gunless country.

BlackPrism · 18/03/2019 18:55

Mostly gunless*

starzig · 18/03/2019 18:59

I think it should be license to own a gun and ban on storage at home unless you have an additional very strict permission and require it for work.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 18/03/2019 19:06

Absolute ROFL at @THEsonofaBITCH saying ‘you can’t discourse with stupid’!

Despite being the person to compare cars to guns. Because car crashes are the second most common cause of deaths - which of course makes them completely synonymous with an item built specifically for killing. Ironically posted not long after an article saying the second leading cause of death in children is...guns Hmm

Mind you, I don’t much trust someone who very carefully says “I've never accidentally taken a life”.

PCohle · 18/03/2019 19:31

I truly don't understand how Americans can look at their murder and accidental death rates involving guns compared to Europe and conclude "no, we're the ones doing it right". Madness.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 18/03/2019 19:34

How does it actually work in Americans minds then. At what point do you feel your democracy is under attack so you pull out your arsenal of weapons and start shooting everyone?

Do you think you should have a legal justification for starting killing or is it just when you decide to define your opinion of liberty on the back of screeching lead?

Would it bother you to kill a 10 year old or would you wait until they are 14 before they are fair game?
