Are gun laws U?

In light of recent attacks in NZ, the increase in knife and gun crime in the UK, shootings in the US and France. What do people think are reasonable options for weapons related laws?

It's clear that none on the current system around the world are perfect.

I am a Brit in the USA, and a gun owner, I also have a concealed carry permit. and I am interested to see what people see as reasonable.

ChrisPrattsFace absolutely agree, not exactly a critical thinker

mbosnz · 16/03/2019 22:07

Ditto. Sorry. Kinda cranky.

nancy75 · 16/03/2019 22:12

USA gun laws are ridiculous but America is now past the point where they can get gun ownership under control.
There are so many guns there how do they ever get it back to a reasonable situation? even if they totally stopped selling guns tomorrow it would make no difference (and that’s without taking in to consideration the people that would have civil war before they give up their weapons)

everythingisginandroses · 16/03/2019 22:21

OP, I've noticed that you seem to rather enjoy coming on here doom-mongering about the future of the UK post-Brexit. What the fuck do you care? Keep your murder weapons and your right-wing horseshit on the other side of the Atlantic and don't come back.

Backwoodsgirl · 16/03/2019 22:31

My personal view is that there does need to be some way of regulating the sale of firearms to prevent them falling into the hands of undesirables.

Having lived in the UK for 30 years moving here it did seem slightly unnatural being offered a handgun as a trade for a item I was selling for the first time but it is what it it is.

I agree that there is limited use for a firearm in urban environments, however in rural areas a gun is a tool, no different to a chainsaw.

I highly doubt that the US government could start a buy back scheme like Australia did. I know within the wider family the rifles with sentimental value would most definitely not be handed in.

OP posts:
nancy75 · 16/03/2019 22:36

Buy back would bankrupt them, Australia has a tiny population compared to the US & Australians aren’t /weren’t nearly as attached to their guns. Dp is Australian & he remembers people queuing up to hand in weapons after Port Arthur and most were not complaining about doing it.

Tinkerbell456 · 16/03/2019 22:41

What is going to happen post Brexit ( leave or stay ) that would necessitate folk wandering around with guns.

fargo123 · 17/03/2019 04:21

Anyone who carries a gun is a fucking moron.

This, plain and simple.

DGRossetti · 17/03/2019 11:07

If what happened in Sandy Hook wasn’t enough for things to change, nothing will be.

US school massacres are three generations older than that ... 1966: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas_tower_shooting

Sheogorath · 18/03/2019 15:26

"The British are the reason for the second amendment ...."

And if the Queen decides to start forcing Americans to pay taxes, by all means they could start carrying muskets. Might be hard to hide one under your t-shirt though.

There is a legitimate debate to be had about gun laws. But starting a thread to brag about how you traded a lawnmower for a gun the day after fifty people were shot dead is pathetic and disgusting.

THEsonofaBITCH · 18/03/2019 15:34

There is no reason for any ordinary person to carry a gun
I repeat. Concealed carry=ego too big for comfort
Spoken like someone who has no idea of how people live their lives and that it might possibly be different to yours. I'm a proud concealed weapon carrier who has used the weapon to save a life.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 18/03/2019 15:37

Op how many kids accidentally shot themselves or another child in the USA last year? In Ireland the number was zero. Our gun laws are even stricter than the UK

THEsonofaBITCH · 18/03/2019 15:39

And I'll add, I've never accidentally taken a life nor had a weapon used inappropriately

DGRossetti · 18/03/2019 15:40

It's hard to top what Eddie Izzard said, years ago ...

according to the NRA, guns don't kill people, it's people that kill people ... only the gun helps, I think ...

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 18/03/2019 15:45

One of the saddest things when you start looking into America's stats on gun related deaths (which have continued to climb over the last couple of years) is that over 60% of these are suicides.

www.nytimes.com/2018/12/18/us/gun-deaths.html

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 18/03/2019 15:49

It's also pretty depressing that "death by gunshot" is the second highest cause of death for children in the USA.

edition.cnn.com/2018/12/20/health/child-gun-deaths-rising/index.html

I honestly do not know how any sane human being can read that fact and not think the USA need to do something about their gun problem.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 18/03/2019 15:55

Every country has mass murders. All bar one react by restricting the use of guns. America seems to be the only country that reacts by wanting more guns.

I watched in horror a TV program about American teachers being permitted & trained to carry weapons in classrooms. Most of the world just can't understand that violent mindset.

All guns should be BANNED for the general public. Only those weapons needed for professions should be permitted, armed police, farmers etc and then with massive restrictions.

THEsonofaBITCH · 18/03/2019 15:55

The number one cause of teen death is car accident. I don't know how any sane human can understand that and not ban all cars!

THEsonofaBITCH · 18/03/2019 15:57

And what about those who use their guns to feed their family? Again, just because you don't and/or can't imagine it doesn't mean it isn't reality for people in America. People are such pompous asses sometimes!

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 18/03/2019 16:07

I think mumsnet might not be the place you are going to get the support or validation you are looking for. Guns are the exception and not the rule in a lot of European countries so I’m not sure what you want to gain from raving about them here.

BertrandRussell · 18/03/2019 16:16

“And what about those who use their guns to feed their family?”
Not sure anyone “feeds their family” with a semi automatic......

THEsonofaBITCH · 18/03/2019 16:18

Not sure anyone “feeds their family” with a semi automatic....
Be sure. They do. Fully automatic, no, semi - absolutely.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 18/03/2019 16:18

Totally agree on the ‘idiot’ comment.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 18/03/2019 16:19

And what about those who use their guns to feed their family?
If that is how they make their living then that would make them a professional hunter, and a very restrictive licence and regulatory system for the least powerful weapon required would suffice.

It does not require multiple automatic / semi automatic weapons, concealed weapons or 99% of the guns Americans hoard just in case their is a global apocalypse.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 18/03/2019 16:19

In answer to your goady and ridiculous question OP - there are a lot of British laws I think are draconian or downright idiotic but gun laws are not included. Those are pretty spot on.
