RTFT!!!!

Mookie81 · 16/03/2019 08:53

I've recent noticed an upsurge in the number of people commenting on threads with remarks or questions that have been answered by the OP further up.
So frustrating!
Why the hell can't people at least read the OP's comments even if they don't want to read the whole thing?
I'm aware it's not a new thing but I'm noticing it more and more lately. AIBU to yell at people to RTFT?!

OP posts:
Graziass · 16/03/2019 09:34

Not everyone has the same custom options though, that's the problem
I didn't know that. Mine come up the same whether I'm logged into PC, phone or tablet.

This is why I seldom look at a thread that has more than 100 comments.
How about as well as having the OP's comments highlighted you could have them all at a glance instead of having to scroll through pages?

Sirzy · 16/03/2019 09:34

I wish the ops posts being highlighted was default.

I often don’t read the whole thread when it’s long but always scroll through and read the green

UnspiritualHome · 16/03/2019 09:36

It's perhaps annoying to some but there's no rule against it.

That's hardly the point, is it? There are lots of things that there is no formal rule against but which are generally regarded as poor posting etiquette, or which may simply make the poster look like a dickhead.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2019 09:36

So many norty posters!Grin

I also have the OP's posts highlighted in green. It does help amazingly! But, unless things have changed, there are other colour choices! My own posts are highlighted in silver, and I believe pink and mauve may still be an option.

But I totally agree with you OP - it's like some posters are so eager to post their own words of wisdom, that they can't read more than one word in 3 of the opening post, or only answer the title of the thread and don't even read all of the opening post at all!! So frustrating.

And then some posters pick up what these ones have written and suddenly there's a whole story developed that has nothing to do with the OP at all!

zen1 · 16/03/2019 09:39

My green bits are grey.

clairemcnam · 16/03/2019 09:44

I think a like button would stop a lot of this.
What I am fed up of are 50 comments all saying the same thing.

Birdsgottafly · 16/03/2019 09:44

Sometimes it's an X post, not everyone types fast.

Or you miss the OP's update.

I can't highlight the OP. Is that just on the App?

ciderhouserules · 16/03/2019 09:45

My green is grey too, but I'm thinking of changing it to green (the grey is too dark and it hurts my eyes)

I was on a thread in which a poster posted RTFT! and was promptly accused of being 'the thread police'. You can't win.

feelingsinister · 16/03/2019 09:47

It's really really annoying and actually makes other people less likely to read to the end as it's full of people making the same irrelevant points.

I do think that mumsnet could make this easier for people though. Lots of other forums are designed so you go back to your last read post which means if you aren't reading something all at once/or are on a fast moving thread you don't have to trawl to find your place again.

I do find the set up here very basic and not very user friendly. Maybe that's because I'm on the phone app and not a desktop.

Birdsgottafly · 16/03/2019 09:47

"What I am fed up of are 50 comments all saying the same thing"

AIBU is asking for opinions, to gage if the OP is BU.

So the consensus is needed.

It's an informal forum. We shouldn't have to consult a thesaurus and reconstruct what we were going to say, to post.

EggysMom · 16/03/2019 09:49

My green is pink!

NutElla5x · 16/03/2019 09:51

Thank you Wildcate for explaining how to highlight. I had no idea you could do that!

Vulpine · 16/03/2019 09:52

I don't find it that annoying. It only takes a couple of seconds to read a post and then move on. Are you lot the thread police

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 16/03/2019 09:53

I think the site should develop a way to isolate the op's posts within a thread so you can just read them quickly.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 16/03/2019 09:53

Green ? OPs threads on my MN are a blue shade .

But yea , I agree with you on this OP

MissionItsPossible · 16/03/2019 09:54

Haven’t RTFT but did you know it stands for Read the Fucking Thread and not Read the Full Thread?

Passmethecrisps · 16/03/2019 09:58

I find it very irritating and don’t get it at all.

Poster can’t be arsed to read more than the opening post but thinks that anyone should be arsed to read their opinion on the matter 400 posts on.

The thread recently with the lunch suggestions. Lunch was done, the in-laws has gone home yet people were still suggesting what op should serve.

ciderhouserules · 16/03/2019 09:58

birds AIBU consists of many many things.

Yes, asking for opinions, but also looking for advice - from 'Is my DH having an affair' to 'what to cook for annoying ILs' to 'what can I do about my bank' ; this last is a long running AIBU about a Bank who have released details of OPs address, phone number and financial details to her abusive, violent ex - and one of the most recent posts is 'Contact the police and go into the branch'. Hmm Durr - The whole mess has moved on significantly from this. That poster has obvs not read the thread, nor even OPs posts, from days ago! How is that not annoying - and unhelpful? And thread-clogging.

It's not hard to look at the number of posts on a thread, and deduce that things might have moved on if in the hundreds! - similarly, check the OP posting date. If it's days ago, don't assume that your pearls of wisdom will not have been put forward by many other posters already Hmm

ciderhouserules · 16/03/2019 10:00

But yes, MN should automatically highlight the OPs posts.

It's been requested more than once.

Sparklingbrook · 16/03/2019 10:02

I don't understand just reading the OP's posts. Is nobody interested in the whole conversation, and other people's opinions?

Reading just the OP's comments doesn't prevent you from repeating what loads of other posters have said.

I just think people are a bit lazy. Grin

MyOtherProfile · 16/03/2019 10:03

@Birdsgottafly no not just on the app. I use the website and I have the OPs posts in green.

ShowMeTheKittens · 16/03/2019 10:03

sometimes people do not have hours and hours to read the entire thread. Sorry if this was not answered by the OP.

Sparklingbrook · 16/03/2019 10:05

If I don't have time to read the thread I don't comment.

VladmirsPoutine · 16/03/2019 10:08

I find it quite funny that people feel compelled to post on a thread they can't be bothered to read. If a thread goes past a certain threshold then I just won't bother reading it unless it's interesting. If it's another case of a MiL daring to pick up her grandchild and at 14-pages in everyone's still arguing then I just move along to another thread.

Strugglingtodomybest · 16/03/2019 10:09

Yanbu, it's so irritating. Makes the poster look stupid too so I don't understand why you'd do it.
