To ask for an ambulance?

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 20:46

I don't know what to do really.
Had a bit of leg pain and tingling the last day or so and wasn't concerned at all but I rang 111, because I had a pulmonary embolism a year ago I thought I should be cautious in case it was another blood clot.
111 people got a doctor from the local hospital to ring me back, she said she isn't concerned from what I've said but wants me to come to a&e straight away for bloods and scan.
I honestly feel fine and a little bit embarrassed, what if it's just a sore muscle or something.
But when I got off the phone I then realised I now have £3 in my bank account and about 80p cash, so can't get an Uber or a bus at this time. I'm a student so all my friends and family are in a different city. Should I ring 111 back and ask if they have a way to transport me? I feel well but if a doctor has told me to go to a&e then it's made me worried.

For future reference for anyone reading some hospitals have a volunteer lifts service. I read about one on a poster when I visited my gran in hospital recently. They charge 20p a mile to take you to the hospital, or to take you home, free at their discretion and basically do it out of the goodness of their hearts, the one I read about had a 24 hour number to call, I'm assuming they divert it to whoever is on call

PregnantSea · 13/03/2019 23:23

Don't get an ambulance. It takes one away from someone having a serious emergency

Littlechocola · 13/03/2019 23:28

Hope you are okay op.
You don’t deserve the harsh replies on here.

notapizzaeater · 13/03/2019 23:29

Hope you get sorted, when you get out first thing you should do is start an emergency fund.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 13/03/2019 23:30

RTFT PregnantSea. OP is now at hospital.

justforthis6473 · 13/03/2019 23:36

So you have basically £0 now but are going to try to conceive next year? Will you have more than £3 or do you intend on living if tax payers money when baby arrives?

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 23:39

I'm literally in the hospital and people are still going on at me and for reasons unrelated to my original post, can't be for real

OP posts:
ineedaholidaynow · 13/03/2019 23:40

Hope you are ok OP.
As an aside why would you start TTC just as you get a new job? Isn't it better to work for a while and actually build up your career and save some money. It's not like you are 40 and time is not on your side

Lovingbenidorm · 13/03/2019 23:41

Just want to throw this in but,
My 21yo kids living in a different city at university would definitely have some money in their account (what about emergencies?)
My phone is by my bed in case kids need me or another relative needs to let me know about death or illness in the family.
Especially at 9.15pm

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 23:43

I'm really glad that your kids have money in their accounts and family that don't put their bloody phone on silent, sadly not everyone is that lucky!

OP posts:
Lovingbenidorm · 13/03/2019 23:44

Not intended as a dig at you OP.
Hope you get it sorted

hospitalbagfrenzy · 13/03/2019 23:45

How are you getting on at the hosp OP? All
The best

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 13/03/2019 23:46

Jesus wept - the OP is LITERALLY in hospital right now being investigated for a PE and you're questioning her life choices!?

There's a time and a place - and this is neither.

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 23:46

Thank you, had my bloods taken and just waiting around at the minute x

OP posts:
Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 23:48

Exactly, I can understand that people were mad about me misusing the NHS but that is the reason that I posted- I wanted to make sure that I would make an appropriate decision. As for everything else, I'm at a loss but thank you to everyone who offered advice it is appreciated, especially being in hospital alone!

ScarletBitch · 13/03/2019 23:49

Don't you dare ring an Ambulance, what do you think they are? A bloody Taxi?

maloofhoof · 13/03/2019 23:50

Regardless of the OP's original question, which she took on board as soon as it was pointed out, I'm shocked at how nasty some people's responses are. No she shouldn't call an ambulance in these circumstances, which she understood after a couple of replies. However, most people I know, at some point in their lives, have been in a position of having no cash and no access to any. If you've never been in that situation you're pretty lucky. I don't know anyone who has a landline these days, not even my mother in her 70's. If I needed my mum after 9pm at night I'd be screwed as she goes to bed then and switches her mobile off. Why is it so hard to believe that some people simply don't have access to money in an emergency nor have people to help in these situations. I'm not in the position anymore however I've had years and years of being left with pennies until pay day and no emergency back up.

BetsyBigNose · 13/03/2019 23:50

I'm on Apixaban now too - much easier than Warfarin - I was hardly ever in range and was having to have venus tests (rather than INR Star finger prick tests) 3 times a week!

My GP was the one who (following discussions with my Consultant, of course) suggested me keeping Celxane injections at home, it's never been an issue for her to prescribe them for me and I have/would only use them when/if directed to do so by a medical professional, familiar with my medical history. Maybe it's not suitable for everyone, I just thought I'd mention it since I had found it really helped to ease my anxiety around the whole thing (another case of PE PTSD here).

I'm really shocked to see so many others posting about having PEs, I don't know anyone else IRL who's had them. My first lot of PEs went undiagnosed for 13 weeks - I visited the GP 21 times in that period as I was getting increasingly breathless and eventually started to get the 'sense of impending doom' that people talk about when they are nearing death. My GP back then was rubbish - I was an otherwise fit and healthy 34 year old, but I couldn't walk more than 5 metres without stopping for a rest and could only manage 2 stairs at a time. I eventually took myself to A&E and was in the CT scanner within 15 mins of arriving - the Radiologist stopped counting clots when he got to 30, he told me I was "riddled" with them!

That first lot was about 4.5 years ago now and I still have trouble sleeping - there's a part of my brain that's utterly convinced that I'm not gong to wake up. It was so painful too, I felt as if I was being stabbed in the chest. I honestly wouldn't wish PEs on anyone - I remember my Consultant telling me that most PEs are only diagnosed (or at least confirmed) post mortem.

Come back and let us know how you get on at the hospital OP, I really hope everything is fine and you're able to head home soon.

thinkfast · 13/03/2019 23:51

I think 111 can order a taxi for people who can't get to hospital by other means and who need to be seen

Kindofnewtothis · 13/03/2019 23:54

Thank you so much! I know nobody else who's had a pe either, I think it's really uncommon in younger people. I went to my gp thinking I had a chest infection and the student doctor who saw me was very on the ball and wanted to send me over to the local hospital "just in case". I'm so thankful that she did because God knows what would've happened, I always thought that if I would've got a different GP maybe a bored old bloke I would've been sent away with some penicillin.
I haven't had any bad experience from apixaban either, other than heavier periods and I've heard some bad side effects online about warfarin and other thinners

Jesus Christ the posters on this thread. You could at least try not to be cunts, some of you.

Lellochip · 13/03/2019 23:58

Yeah, fuck the driver who's doing it trying to scrape a living.

I wasn't suggesting don't pay at all! Just in an urgent situation could've bought a few hours leeway until she could get cash into her account tomorrow. The drivers don't get your money straight away so shouldn't cause them a problem

People on here are actual arseholes sometimes..keep us posted op, hope it's nothing.

Couldn't agree more - what is it that makes someone so vile to post horrible comments to someone who is clearly worried, has no access to money and isn't up to speed with the do's and dont's of the health service.

To then go on to research their posting history? Seriously? Get a bloody life FGS

OP I'm sorry you've been treat so unfairly by some on this thread - I work in the health service and I'm certainly not 'empathy tired' or whatever the buzz words are - I do my best for my patients.

You've realised that no, it's not ok to get transport via ambulance and thankfully you're now getting sorted - I wish you well.

To the sarcastic bullies who've posted? I hope the 'buzz' you got being horrible was worth it. Bah - vile

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 14/03/2019 00:04

I know, each time I read a DVT or PE related thread I'm surprised how ms y people ha e had one or know someone who has.

I heard apixaban was pretty good side effect wise. I was on Rivaroxaban which was OK other than the godawful periods which resulted in me getting anaemic, loosing 1/2 my hair (still growing back now) and hardly being able to function - they ended up taking me off it before the standard 6 months (was a provoked PE).

Are you seriously so narrow minded that because your kids have access to money someone else couldn't? This place stinks at times, and it's because of people like you who couldn't possibly empathise with people who literally don't have a penny to spare.

Disgusting.
