How often do you fall over?

Just curious really. I have been surprised to the response about falling down stairs.
I fall over every few months, and always have. This ranges from tripping up and falling over on the pavement, to every few years falling all the way down stairs. I have been like this my whole life so I am not worried there is anything wrong. Just wondering if this is unusual?

Slightly off topic, but how old do you have to be before you "have a fall" rather than just fall over?

A work colleague who is the same age as me fell over at work and everyone was saying "did you hear, X had a fall? " and I was really surprised they described it like that.

lilabet2 · 13/03/2019 22:02

SherlockHolmes- I've wondered that- maybe whatever age a routine fall causes you injuries? maybe 70?

Chouetted · 13/03/2019 22:07

My understanding is that anyone can have a fall, but it's more serious or more injurious than merely falling over.

As in "she had a bad fall and broke her neck" vs "I fell down the step and grazed my knee.

DiscoDown · 13/03/2019 22:11

It's probably been a year since I actually fell to the floor (icy pavement), but I trip or knock into things quite often. I also spill things, and can't ride a bike. I was always told off for being clumsy as a child and even now if I trip or hurt myself my parents will roll their eyes and say "typical Disco". I try to be careful, it just happens. I suspect if I was at school now I'd have been diagnosed with dyspraxia.

Marv1nGay3 · 13/03/2019 22:12

Even a mild hearing loss can cause balance problems as your brain is working harder to hear. Have you a hearing check?

tinyradish · 13/03/2019 22:12

Honestly can't remember the last time I fell over!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 13/03/2019 22:13

Trip over my own feet/stub my toe regularly, fall right over maybe once or twice a year. Broke my arm a few years ago falling off a high pair of heels!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 13/03/2019 22:16

@DiscoDown I can't ride a bike either! I apparently also tie my shoes in a 'weird way' according to DH. Regularly misjudge things and catch a hip/leg/elbow on tables, doors etc. Probably dyspraxic but never diagnosed, I went to school in the eighties...

PookieDo · 13/03/2019 22:17

I have poor balance as I have nerve damage in my legs so I am extra careful. The times I have fallen over I have been doing something stupid. I tried to wear heels a few months ago and went down in them in a spectacular fashion (at Work) and had a serious ankle sprain. I also fell off a stepladder a few weeks ago - all my own fault for pushing my luck with my balance!

I am not saying other people are doing stupid things but it usually happens to me when I take a silly risk outside of my usual perameters of my range of abilities

CherryPavlova · 13/03/2019 22:17

I trip over a lot. I generally put it down to uneven surfaces and a lack of concentration. Branches across footpaths, fox or rabbit holes, tractor tyre ruts or broken paving slabs.
If I’m rushing I tend to do it too.

zunshine · 13/03/2019 22:18

Sometimes I wonder if I have dyspraxia, I walk into something (like a chair, wall, table)pretty much on a daily basis, I stumble and nearly fall over about once a week and I actually fall over about once a month, maybe a little less as I can usually grab onto something to stop myself. I've always been very clumsy, terrible co ordination

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/03/2019 22:19

Think I have fallen 3 times in the past 20 years.

Once because I slipped on mud, once I tripped on an uneven pavement and one when I got out of the car and tripped on a speed bump.

Do have a scar on my knee when I fell over when I was 4 years old. That was a bad fall

OnlineAlienator · 13/03/2019 22:19

Barely ever

greenelephantscarf · 13/03/2019 22:20

about once a year. last time when on a run and tripping over uneven pavement.

falling that often doesn't sound normal. maybe you need to reconsider what you wear on your feet?

FrozenMargarita17 · 13/03/2019 22:21

I hardly ever fall over, but I constantly have near misses. Just a couple of weeks ago I fell up the stairs at the GP surgery holding dd.

Cherrysoup · 13/03/2019 22:21

Once a year and I generally really hurt myself, crutches for weeks etc. I get cellulitis every bloody time. So annoying.

whitehalleve · 13/03/2019 22:21

Never

TwoleftUggs · 13/03/2019 22:21

Only fallen once as an adult, 25 years ago when running in heeled boots for a train. Sprawled across the platform at rush hour, the embarrassment and adrenaline got me back up and running, despite having massively damaged my ankle - it has never been the same since!
I was surprised on that post by the number of people who have fallen down stairs. It frightened me a little that it appears so common.

Bethanyg25 · 13/03/2019 22:23

Very very rarely. The other day I got out the car, walked round the boot and skidded on the stones we have on our drive way and fell right over. Felt like a right plonker couldn’t stop laughing to myself

user1471453601 · 13/03/2019 22:26

Since I had my cataracts rwmoved, I have never fallen. Or walked into furniture. I didn't realise how much my sight was compromised by the cataracts until they were removed

lljkk · 13/03/2019 22:27

I'm a rough & tumble gal so probably 1-3 times a week. Most are totally unmemorable. I have the world's most amazing ankles. They never hurt afterwards.

Nearly fell while out jogging the other day (always jog on rough ground). Most recent fall I clearly recall, about 10 days ago, pushing a bike with puncture, my foot caught on a bramble, me & bike went DoWn. Sore knee afterwards. It's fine now.

As long as it's not off a bike & something got broken or I go under a bus, falls don't scare me.

Runkle · 13/03/2019 22:30

About 2-3 times a year. Last 2 were pretty bad, nothing broken but long recovery.

FlamingoFlamenco · 13/03/2019 22:31

I fell over not so long since. I was walking into the bedroom with an armful of clothing, tripped on the rug, my knees hit the floor and I face planted into the bed. Couldn't get up as my arms were trapped under my body.
My DP came racing up the stairs as he'd heard my knees thud on the floor and thought I'd fainted.

I felt quite [embarrassed]

Pinkbells · 13/03/2019 22:32

Pretty much never, but I did once come home with a case in my hand, tripped over the doorstep and crashed into the door, the case skittered across the hall floor and my pride was a little dented. 'Honey, I'm home!' I suppose it was quite funny. Regularly though, definitely worth getting a GP to check out.

WhoWants2Know · 13/03/2019 22:35

I fall down pretty frequently and occasionally in a spectacular fashion. Always have done.
