How often do you fall over?

Just curious really. I have been surprised to the response about falling down stairs.
I fall over every few months, and always have. This ranges from tripping up and falling over on the pavement, to every few years falling all the way down stairs. I have been like this my whole life so I am not worried there is anything wrong. Just wondering if this is unusual?

I have regularly done exercises for balance for about 10 years. No issues with vision, and I have always been like this. Sometimes tripping, sometimes slipping, sometimes not seeing something.

I trip most days but am quite well practiced at catching myself so thankfully I rarely hit the ground anymore, I have dyspraxia though so this isn't uncommon.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 13/03/2019 13:39

It since I was a kid.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 13/03/2019 13:39

NOT

Jinglejanglefish · 13/03/2019 13:41

I can’t remember the last time I fell over. Not for at least 10 years. I have never fallen down a whole flight of stairs, I fell down half a staircase as a 5 year old but not since.

Seniorschoolmum · 13/03/2019 13:41

Only if I’m doing something daft or strenuous. Last time was in a martial arts class, before that, skiing. I’m hopeless at both. Smile

Jinglejanglefish · 13/03/2019 13:42

Oh and in five years the only time I’ve seen dp fall is when he ran into the bathroom and the floor was wet. So no I don’t think it’s usual for an adult to regularly fall.

lilabet2 · 13/03/2019 13:42

Very rarely- I fell 18 months ago whilst running because I tripped over something but I hadn't fallen for years before that. Generally the fact that I run means that my body has learnt to right my position if I'm about to fall.

I don't think it's that common for most people unless they have something like Menieres, Dyspraxia or something. There are conditions like Motor Neurone Disease that cause frequent falls but they do get worse whereas it sounds like you've been prone to falls throughout your life.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 13/03/2019 13:43

Very, very rarely.
Last time was when toddler tripped me up and I fell to save the toddler.
I do a lot of walking, mtbiking and fell running.

ColeHawlins · 13/03/2019 13:45

Sometimes tripping, sometimes slipping, sometimes not seeing something.

As it's lifelong and a whole range of trips, slips etc, I'd probably wonder about dyspraxia. DD is dyspraxic and she's a lot like that.

ShinyMe · 13/03/2019 13:46

I stumble all the time, easily several times a week. Over steps, into door frames, corners of desks etc. I only fall OVER rarely. Although I did fall up the stairs the other day and spilled scorching hot tea all over my boobs and banged my nose on the carpet.

FlippinNora1 · 13/03/2019 13:46

I can’t think of a time I’ve ever fallen over as an adult. My sister falls over loads. She has dyspraxia.

FuckertyBoo · 13/03/2019 13:47

My 4yo falls over a lot and paediatrician thinks mildly hyper mobile and maybe a little flat footed. Not sure if it’s the same for adults, but you never know!

I fall right over, as in land on the ground, maybe once a year...? Maybe less? I don’t really know. Not very often anyway.

Gosh I fall over all the time! I have the worst balance known to man.

ChestOfFields · 13/03/2019 13:51

Usually most days! I can trip over my own feet, and if I don't concentrate on where I'm walking, I'll walk into a wall or trip off a kerb!
For the last couple of years, every few months, I'll get up for the loo, and be really really dizzy (like my world is spinning (I don't drink so it's not that!)
Also luckily it's only happened at home!

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 13/03/2019 13:54

Well I'm bout to jinx it now aren't I, but it's been around 10 years since I last fell over. I was walking down the stairs with baby dd in my arms and didn't see the bastard cat sitting on a step. Obviously couldn't put my hands down to break my fall so ended up with a very sore arse. I miss that cat and his repeated attempts to kill me.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 13/03/2019 13:56

Quite a bit or nearly. My ankle goes over quite often so I stumble quite a bit.

I can fall up and downstairs. Last year I slipped all the way down the stairs and ended up with a massive bruise on my thigh.
I've always been clumsy.

And it was always worse when I was pregnant!

Disney2 · 13/03/2019 13:57

Very rarely fall to the ground but I'm always stubbing my toes and banging my shins on the coffee table or accidentally hitting into doorframes. I always also seem to find the most uneven bit of pavement to stumble over when out and about. Hmm

Eminybob · 13/03/2019 13:57

Loads.
I fell over twice recently while pregnant with ds2. I fell down the stairs while carrying ds1 when he was a baby. I fell over at work about 18 months ago and they called an ambulance as I couldn’t walk.
And several times while drunk.
I actually broke my ankle once after falling on holiday but couldn’t face the hospital so ignored it and didn’t know it was broken until several years later when they X-rayed after the fall at work.
I’m a complete clutz and rarely wear heels anymore for fear of falling.

Chouetted · 13/03/2019 13:58

@PRoseLegend I'm afraid I don't actually have an official diagnosis - I lucked out and got an occupational therapist who also had it, and knew the diagnosis difficulties. She said it was blindingly obvious that I did too, so she'd treat me as if I had the diagnosis. With her support I had adaptations to my house, claimed PIP, etc.

Officially I merely have "difficulties consistent with dyspraxia".

As for the "pay more attention" line - I had that from my family for years. The evil in it is that it's true up to a point, but it's just not realistic to go around 24/7 treating every movement like I'm practicing brain surgery. I'm afraid I don't really have any advice on how to get him to take you more seriously Sad

woodcutbirds · 13/03/2019 14:01

About once or twice a year I trip or slip.

clairemcnam · 13/03/2019 14:01

I actually got questioned by a GP if I was drinking lots, after I needed hospital treatment twice in the same months for different falls.
That is unusual though.
I rarely fall if I have been drinking though - ironically.

I know with me it’s lack of balance, I can’t ride a bike either.

jellybaby1 · 13/03/2019 14:03

I'm clumsy, so fall over and into things regularly. I'm always covered in bruises and scratches 😂. It's normal for me.
