AIBU to think that cocaine isn't "a nice drug"?

Just that, really.
I spent the afternoon with a friend who has been through quite a lot of challenges lately - bereavement, relationship problems, and we (she) did a lot of talking. Her therapy has brought up issues from her past, in particular, a relationship with a man (she says the love of her life) who drank a lot, took cocaine, and encouraged her to do the same.
She said "Cocaine isn't a bad drug, it's quite a nice drug, it makes you feel nice, but I stopped taking it, because I wasn't able to work the next day."
I said nothing at the time because I was listening to her about many other things, but it's stuck in my mind.
AIBU to think this is not right?

Other people's drug stories are dull, but no yanbu

Cocaine is a wanker's drug.

10IAR · 12/03/2019 11:11

I've never taken it so can't speak to how it makes you feel. I have however lost friends to the grossly horrendous addiction it causes, both through death and through being utterly unable to function as an adult and losing everything.

It's a wicked wicked drug.

PaddyF0dder · 12/03/2019 11:13

Cocaine is taken by wankers to make them even bigger wankers.

MephistophelesApprentice · 12/03/2019 11:13

It's a shit drug. Lasts no more than 20 minutes, then gives you a headache and a craving. Silly waste of money, smart of her to stop. There's far better drugs out there.

donajimena · 12/03/2019 11:17

It is actually nice. As PP said...for 20 mins. So you take more and end up with a bloody nose a racing heart and a lighter wallet. I tried it once in my misspent youth and think its a complete waste of time, dangerous and responsible for an awful lot of crime.

supersop60 · 12/03/2019 11:20

I totally agree.
I guess I'm more worried about my friend's skewed view of her life. This was 20 years ago (she's 53) and she's talking about rekindling the relationship with this man. It's a whole other thread waiting to happen.

No drug is a nice drug, unless its prescribed and administered by a HCP to manage chronic pain or similar.
Personally i would put all drug lords, smugglers dealers up against a wall and shoot them.

WhoWasIt · 12/03/2019 11:24

and dealers, that should say.

PBo83 · 12/03/2019 11:24

through death and through being utterly unable to function as an adult and losing everything.

Possible if we're talking about crack cocaine or heroin. Powder cocaine (which I assume the OP is talking about) is non-addictive. You might get slightly addicted to the buzz but chemically it isn't addictive like heroin etc.

It's also very unlikely to kill you (not belittling your sad loss, just assume this must have been crack or similar).

THAT said, as a former user of cocaine myself, it's incredibly expensive and, as others have said, generally quite a short-lived buzz followed by a headache.

acciocat · 12/03/2019 11:25

Has your friend actually thought about the pathway whereby that cocaine got into her hands? The corruption, trafficking, deaths?

Quite aside from whether it’s a ‘nice’ feeling for half an hour or so, I can’t fathom how anyone of average intelligence upwards could want to play any role in the cocaine industry

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 12/03/2019 11:29

No it is not a nice drug. Its nice for a few hours until it runs out, but then you can't sleep and you feel awful the next day, truly awful.

PinkHeart5914 · 12/03/2019 11:29

So it’s such a nice drug but made her feel that rubbish she couldn’t work the next day.

Most drug takers are generally quite dull really, putting this rubbish in ones body doesn’t make you cool or any less dull.

By the sounds of it she has issues so of course she can’t see the problem with having taken it, people like her rarely can

supersop60 · 12/03/2019 11:34

Has your friend actually thought about the pathway whereby that cocaine got into her hands? The corruption, trafficking, deaths?

She's an intelligent woman, and until this point, I would have thought so, but obviously not.
pinkheart - yes, she has all sorts of issues. I worry about her.

PBo83 no not crack or heroin, powdered cocaine which IS highly addictive.

Lweji · 12/03/2019 11:37

Of course it's not, that's why it's illegal. It's a no brainer.

But of course it makes people feel "nice" for a time, which is why people take it and end up getting addicted.
Drugs that make you feel bad don't have the same appeal, or market for them.

Her problem is that she seems to want to get back with that man and will put her rose tinted glasses about everything that relates to him.

supersop60 · 12/03/2019 11:43

Yep,

OP posts:
flameycakes · 12/03/2019 11:46

It's a horrible drug, turns people into nasty aggressive twats x

Nickpan · 12/03/2019 11:48

Surely most drugs are great, and that's why people take them? No-one has ever said "here, have a bang on this, it'll make you feel sick and anxious".
Same as booze, you feel rough after, but that doesn't matter because that's later on, every one expects the hangover

FrozenMargarita17 · 12/03/2019 11:50

That stuff makes arseholes even more arsehole-ier.

Fucking hate it

Fazackerley · 12/03/2019 11:50

Cocaine is very addictive. Maybe no physical withdrawal but psychologically

OurChristmasMiracle · 12/03/2019 11:51

I watched cocaine ruin my ex husband. He turned into someone I didn’t recognise and whilst it may not be physically addictive it definitely is mentally. I have watched him chasing it at 4am after already spending hundreds of pounds on it.

It took the man that I loved and he turned into someone I barely recognised. It’s just socially more accepted and that concerns me because it is still a class A drug the same as ecstasy or crack and therefore has the same powers.

And yes you can die as a result of it. It increases your heart rate so heart attacks etc can result.

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 12/03/2019 11:52

Everyone I know who’s done cocaine has been an absolute wanker, at least while using it. So no, it’s definitely not a “nice” drug.

Fazackerley · 12/03/2019 11:54

Yep, it's for bellends.

araiwa · 12/03/2019 12:26

Other than the legality of it, all of the criticisms of cocaine in this thread so far could be easily applied to prosecco or gin equally

Lweji · 12/03/2019 12:27

If you drink enough to get drunk, yes.
