AIBU to think that cocaine isn't "a nice drug"?

Just that, really.
I spent the afternoon with a friend who has been through quite a lot of challenges lately - bereavement, relationship problems, and we (she) did a lot of talking. Her therapy has brought up issues from her past, in particular, a relationship with a man (she says the love of her life) who drank a lot, took cocaine, and encouraged her to do the same.
She said "Cocaine isn't a bad drug, it's quite a nice drug, it makes you feel nice, but I stopped taking it, because I wasn't able to work the next day."
I said nothing at the time because I was listening to her about many other things, but it's stuck in my mind.
AIBU to think this is not right?

araiwa that's true. So I'll add this.

Dealers take over entire areas, they use violence and coercion and fear to do their business and destroy people's lives. They blight entire estates, they have no respect for the law, for human life, or for anyone who gets in their way.

The cocaine trade in particular is heavily linked with sex traffickers, human traffickers and the Colombian government (among others) is at a loss to control the enormous cartels which deliver mob justice leaving body parts scattered all over the streets to terrify the survivors into submission.

Prosecco and gin don't do that.

araiwa · 12/03/2019 12:36

So legalise it and remove that part of it

Then itll be the same as alcohol. When alcohol was illegal during prohibition, there were the same issues due to the criminality of it

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/03/2019 12:38

I hate cocaine. I used to work in film and TV, and it was accepted and used a lot. I hated having to go to parties because they were full of coke wankers who just talked about how fucking great they were. They weren't.Hmm

10IAR · 12/03/2019 12:39

Personally I do want to see drugs legalised. Not because they're a good thing, but because with regulation it cuts the dealers off at the knees who cause so much pain and heartache.

I'm probably not the most impartial person on this, I've seen first hand how they do it and how fucking awful it is.

I also campaigned for needle exchanges and safe spaces for addicts to consume drugs to keep them off the street. Because our old local play park became a no go area due to needles and anti social behaviour.

So by bringing it out of the darkness into the light, it lessens the stranglehold of gangsters. But as shown with alcohol, it doesn't remove the social problems.

R2G · 12/03/2019 12:43

Also wish to see drugs legalised to remove the criminal profit and guarantee quality for users.
Cocaine creates debt, is used as a crutch by people with low self esteem, and users can be aggressive. No it’s not a nice drug.

Lweji · 12/03/2019 12:46

So legalise it and remove that part of it

Not so simple. Nobody takes cocaine in small amounts because they like the taste, like alcoholic drinks.

In some countries, like Portugal, traffic is illegal, but drug use (and having small amounts for personal use) isn't. It's decriminalised, but not legal.
Drugs are still a problem and there's still traffic, but the effects of most use are so serious that legalisation is not likely to be a good option.

araiwa · 12/03/2019 12:46

The biggest social problems from illegal drugs are because of their illegality. Remove that and you free up a lot of resources to deal with other related issues.

Being the only sober person in a room full of drunks sucks equally

caffeineplease · 12/03/2019 12:47

That drug kills. It's not a nice death either.

Crowdo · 12/03/2019 12:49

It gives you a massive hit of dopamine, so it does feel nice.

I don't think it should be decriminalised, however. I think it's too destructive for long term users for that. I do think other drugs should be legalised, particularly DMT/ketamine, but not cocaine.

araiwa · 12/03/2019 12:52

Id legalise it all

Not suggesting you can buy crack from tesco, it would be controlled.

But you couldnt be jailed for being a drug user

Lweji · 12/03/2019 12:52

Decriminalisation must be accompanied by forms of support to leave the drugs, etc. The point is that people don't get jail for using drugs or having small amounts, which only makes it worse.

Oblomov19 · 12/03/2019 13:26

This thread is very negative about it. Not everyone has such an addictive personality that they act like a bellend and then become addicted.

I've seen other threads where many people tried things while at college and uni and since have not had any long term bad side effects!!

Fazackerley · 12/03/2019 13:49

everyone acts like a bellend on coke.

Wedgiecar58 · 12/03/2019 14:24

@MephistophelesApprentice Sounds like you've never had some decent coke.

KirrinIsland5 · 12/03/2019 14:42

Everyone acts like a bellend on coke???? Not true. Ive known people for years and found out later that they’ve been doing coke regularly for periods of time and there was no difference in their behaviour. They weren’t bellends at any point.

madeyemoodysmum · 12/03/2019 14:45

I’m with whowasit
All illegal drugs cause immeasurable pain and I wish I had a magic wand to irradiate them altogether

araiwa · 12/03/2019 15:01

There is a magic wand - legalize it

Lweji · 12/03/2019 15:02

Legalisation is not a magic wand, just as alcohol didn't stop causing problems because it's legal.

lightcurlypotatosnack · 12/03/2019 15:06

I have a close family member who is addicted to cocaine. They have changed from a bright, outgoing and loving person into somebody I can't even recognise. They are horrible, treat people with no respect, have taken money off people and never paid it back (into the thousands in total). They have had drug dealers hounding family members for their unpaid debts and completely sold out their family for cocaine. They have cheated on their partner numerous times, are living in squalor and while they have a good job, they jump from company to company and leave their previous employers in the lurch with overpaid wages and work that's not been done.

Some of the people they associate with really are the lowest of the low, absolute scum of society. They used to have loads of friends and a good life ahead of them and they've thrown all of it away to shovel coke up their nose.
It's sad and it's disgusting and it ruins lives and tears families apart. Anyone that can describe this as a "nice drug" must be fucking addled on the stuff.

fauxhuman · 12/03/2019 15:08

Meh
Don't think coke is too bad. All drugs are fun, that's why people take them.

MephistophelesApprentice · 12/03/2019 15:09

Wedgiecar58

I have had amazing coke. In fact, I've totally had the BEST coke ever. I felt INCREDIBLE, I was incredible, EVERYONE thought I was the BEST IN THE WORLD.

Then 25 minutes later it wore off, and I had a headache. Absolutely shit drug. MDMA is nicer, cheaper and makes you a cloyingly irritating person for two hours rather than an aggressively irritating person for little more than a quarter.

lightcurlypotatosnack · 12/03/2019 15:09

However, on the other hand like @Oblomov19 says, I myself whilst at University and some of my friends have tried various drugs (cocaine included) and none of us have become addicts that have wrecked their lives. I think a lot of cocaine users (like most drugs) use it recreationally and don't turn out like the person I've described.

daisyjgrey · 12/03/2019 15:17

My brother in law committed suicide last year thanks to cocaine induced psychosis.

Please fuck off with 'it's not that bad', 'its quite fun' and 'people are being too negative about it'.

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 12/03/2019 15:27

Every Coke user I’ve ever known has behaved like a total knob. Sorry to burst the bubble of the pro-coke lobby on this thread. Whilst you think you look, sound and act cool on it, the rest of the world sees it turns you into a self centred bellend. I say this having spent A LOT of time around A LOT of users.

Choosinganame · 12/03/2019 15:28

Cocaine is a horrible dangerous drug IMO and highly highly addictive.
It's ridiculous to say it's just taken by wankers though. Some people are able to use it for fun every now and again and not get addicted, but many do and will.
I've watched it ruin people's lives and even those who don't think it's ruined their lives are now unable to have a drink without buying it and tend to become too talkative and boring to those around them.
The high is brief followed by hours of desperately trying to sleep with a racing heart and then a terrible come down. Not worth it.
