To be so traumatised

I have been so shocked and upset by the drama Line of Duty.

I hadn't realised it was true, maybe naïvely, yes.

It was absolutely horrific the actual stuff that went on, the actual serving officers killed in the line of duty, and those that went to prison in the line of duty, all trying to uncover a massive cover up by men systematically abusing children in care homes.

Sad

Is it on Netflix? I've never seen it but it sounds like it's well worth watching.

Smotheroffive · 11/03/2019 15:06

telegraph commentary on the historic reality of the show

I did realise that an AC-12 didn't exist, to show actual organisational and logistical realities would be rather risky!

So clearly, they portray it 'dramatised', and I had thought I was watching an extremely gripping drama, exceptionally well executed by all on the production. I didn't think these were real people, but just a drama, until the end.

But I am relieved to see the amount of press calling it 'tricking'

My naïvety comes from notsomuch telly watching, I think.

I found it, recorded, and binge-watched it yesterday.

Clearly it was meant to have that effect and I'm now extremely pissed off.

I think it's irresponsible.

Still an awesome production

Must admit I watched LOD on the back of The Bodyguard. It was 'ok' but I never understood all the raving about it. Vicky McClures character grated on me immensely.
Awaits a flaming

crochetmonkey74 · 11/03/2019 15:07

if I'm understanding OP correctly, the end has updates on characters and updates on real people, and some viewers got confused and thought characters were real people?

nope, all characters. It was all fictional- but as PPs said, there was one photo of Saville in it and a FICTIONAL character inspired by Cyril Smith

The updates are all on the fictional characters

It wasn't a trick- just a perfectly normal plot device.

Topseyt · 11/03/2019 15:07

It is a TV drama. It is fiction. It isn't reality.

No need to be traumatised by it at all. Just remember that it is not real.

The hallmark of a good drama is that it looks realistic.

Tomtontom · 11/03/2019 15:07

They're all on iplayer at the moment, not sure about Netflix. It's brilliant, if a little far fetched at moments.

crochetmonkey74 · 11/03/2019 15:08

I think it's irresponsible

Why?

Grace212 · 11/03/2019 15:09

crochet thank you

Grace212 · 11/03/2019 15:10

OP "Clearly it was meant to have that effect"

if the updates were all about the characters, then how was it meant to trick anyone?!

Tomtontom · 11/03/2019 15:12

Your link doesn't work.

I can't understand why you're so pissed off. A little embarrassed maybe.

To call it irresponsible suggests that you think all tv should be aimed at the lowest common denominator, assume everyone is stupid and programming has to reflect that. It would be very sad if that was to happen.

Nickpan · 11/03/2019 15:14

I knew it wasn't real when the cross-eyed one grabbed a machine gun and proceeded to be very accurate.

Smotheroffive · 11/03/2019 15:15

Just for those taking the piss out of me (thanks), no, I didn't believe it was anything other than drama whilst I was wholly gripped throughout, then I saw the end, which are real facts presented as real facts aligned to the production I had just seen.

That was the shit bit, and I posted the telegraph link to the 'real ac-12, which of course I assume/know exists, but not in the dramatised form of 'ac-12'

These events, that has been fictionalised, have taken place, but they listed what had actually happened to whom as a direct result of this 'investigation'

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 11/03/2019 15:17

Irresponsible 😂😂

Grace212 · 11/03/2019 15:18

OP "These events, that has been fictionalised, have taken place, but they listed what had actually happened to whom as a direct result of this 'investigation'"

but a list of what happened to characters is completely normal for fiction. Confused

and did they "dramatise" specific events, I thought it was "inspired by" or more general even.

Smotheroffive · 11/03/2019 15:18

Just to be clear, I'm not believing these factors walk around with machine guns, I mean, thanks, really for taking the piss over something that genuinely upset me, cheers.

It is recognised as an extremely hard-hitting drama, extremely well executed.

I do not spend my life watching crap TV, and listening to some bollox I looked this out, have never seen it before and thought I'd give it a go. No idea what it was, other than a drama series.

Grace212 · 11/03/2019 15:19

OP "which are real facts presented as real facts aligned to the production I had just seen."

so "real facts" about the fiction you just watched?! Sorry OP, I can't for the life of me see what you are annoyed about here.

Smotheroffive · 11/03/2019 15:20

Yes, inspired, is the reasonable way to describe, but they have deliberately blurred those lines

OP posts:
GrimDamnFanjo · 11/03/2019 15:20

The round up at the end is a perfectly normal plot device used in many dramas as well as documentaries...

TwitterQueen1 · 11/03/2019 15:20

I think you need to stop watching TV.....

or maybe stick to CBeebies Grin. That's not real either btw.

Nicknacky · 11/03/2019 15:21

Why are you so upset a drama?

What was it in the story line that has upset you so much?

diabeticsanon · 11/03/2019 15:21

i might be a bit dim but why do people watch/ read things that 'traumatise' [them then complain about it ? switch it off you don't have to upset yourself.

reallybadidea · 11/03/2019 15:22

I'm confused...

DotForShort · 11/03/2019 15:22

It isn't a trick. And there is nothing even slightly irresponsible about it. Any effective work of fiction allows you to become absorbed in what you are reading/viewing. People often want to believe that they are seeing something "real," hence the tendency to add taglines like "based on a true story" or "inspired by actual events." But you watched a constructed narrative, not a documentary (obviously).

Grace212 · 11/03/2019 15:23

OP, what is the "trick"?

IvanaPee · 11/03/2019 15:23

😂😂😂

Are you this dramatic all the time? It must be exhausting!
