To think that you don't walk into a vegan cafe with a Mcdonald's burger in your hand

Had a lovely lunch yesterday at a bar that sells outstandingly good vegan food (I'm not vegan, but the food is insanely good).

As we were walking out DD asked if I had seen a family walk in with one of the children holding a Mcdonald's burger in their hand.

a) It is rude to bring your own food into a café anyway
b) It is breathtakingly rude to bring meat into a vegan café!

This place sells the most amazing chips, so they could easily have bought this child the chips instead of a McDonald's.

The OP was actually about whether bringing meat into a vegan place was a particular problem. Would she have posted if the child had been eating a bag of cucumber sticks? I think not.

The OP clearly and succinctly articulated two separate issues she had with the burger. She set them out as points a) and b), enabling some of us to say we wouldn’t have been bothered about a), but we heartily agreed on the rudeness of b).

I know that isn’t quite as convenient for an attack on the OP. Facts are so inconvenient.

NutElla5x · 10/03/2019 18:21

I'm with you op. My pet hate is when I see some self righteous little toddler munching away on mini carrots in Mcdonalds whilst I'm trying to enjoy my big mac.I mean really, stay home if you wanna eat rabbit food punk!

As one who is fed up of having veganism rammed down my throat then I would actually take great delight in walking into a vegan temple with a Big Mac in my hand and it's not something I've ever eaten. Of course it's unacceptable however to take one's own food into any establishment but having been with people who refuse to eat alongside non-vegans, seperate tables were demanded, they deserve all they get.

MyBestFriendIsAHamster · 10/03/2019 22:15

I'm a vegan and I'm still yet to ram it down anyone's throat. Am I doing it wrong?

MyBestFriendIsAHamster · 10/03/2019 22:16

they deserve all they get.

Even the ones who are just quietly going about their business and not doing anyone any harm?

You sound delightful Biscuit.

Joyfullittlehippo. My point is that most restaurants that serve a particular cuisine (Chinese or Indian for example) serve one or two items not of that cuisine enabling people to have the choice of what to eat, so for an example a Indian food liking person not to be left out at meal were everyone else wanted indian and also meaning their food preference doesn't impact everyone else. Vegetarian restaurants dont seem to offer that choice which seems to be a poor business and b forces people to eat vegetarian.

zwellers · 10/03/2019 22:35

Non Indian food liking person even!

TapasForTwo · 10/03/2019 22:37

"Vegetarian restaurants don't seem to offer that choice which seems to be a poor business and b forces people to eat vegetarian."

I can't think of a smart enough answer to this ridiculous comment.

Jesus Christ! Is it really such a drama for people to eat one bloody meal without meat?

TapasForTwo · 10/03/2019 22:39

I find it interesting that the most angry and defensive comments on this thread are from meat eaters.

Where are all these rampant evangelistic vegans that they keep talking about? Grin

Yup.

Biscuit

A steak a day keeps the vegans away 💪

(...mostly because meat eaters have more lean muscle mass so can run faster and further 😁)

nanbread · 10/03/2019 22:57

Bloody hell, has the Daily Mail picked this up or something because this thread is full of narrow minded, judgemental comments.

I particularly like "they deserve all they get" - you mean like some delicious food (in an increasing number of restaurants both vegan and non), cheaper supermarket bills, a healthier weight, a longer life and the knowledge that you've reduced your impact on the planet?

TapasForTwo · 10/03/2019 23:02

Perhaps we should pepper this thread with a few choice swear words so that the Daily Fail doesn't use this as story?

If I was going out to eat and my child wasn't a fan of what we were going to eat I'd take food with me.

And IDGAF...

I can't see how it's rude blah blah. I've also recently decided to stop caring and do what makes me happy as long as it's not impeding anyone else.

I grew up vegan... I'm now a flexitarian.

You seriously never eat a meal that doesn’t include meat?

Mymycherrypie · 11/03/2019 00:28

Joyfullittlehippo isn’t saying that, and hasn’t said that.

can I just say as a non-vegan I’m perfectly happy to be force fed chips, veg curry, etc.

To quote you earlier Jassy, facts are so inconvenient. Grin

Additionally if she wants to eat meat everyday, with every meal, it’s her body her choice. That’s the very crux of this argument.

Don't Maccy's sell veggie burgers now? How do you know it wasn't one of those.

Would it be just as offensive if the child entered clutching a genuine milkshake?

Sounds hilarious to me. Wish I had been there to watch.

gauntletthrown · 11/03/2019 06:52

I'm vegan.

I'm not an activist.

I'd be pissed off if someone brought McDonalds food into the vegan cafe. The smell of it makes me retch.

A vegan cafe is probably the only place a vegan can be certain of no cross contamination and no meaty smells.

It's rude to bring your own food. Rude to bring meat.

sashh · 11/03/2019 07:21

It depends.

Doing it just to wind up vegan staff / customers YANBU.

Done because the child has a medical need for actual meat, the owner knows and the family are regulars - YABU

anniehm · 11/03/2019 08:01

You don't bring food from other restaurants full stop (apart from baby food up to around 15 months perhaps though I gave them my food generally)
