To ask if anyone is actually comfy in a bra?

I am 54 and, having had no kids, have reasonably “perky” boobs. Hey, being childless has to have a little upside, ok. Average cup size. I hate wearing a bra! Obviously need to if inappropriate not to, but find most bras hellishly uncomfortable really. Do I have any ummm..support for this view?

It was hard enough to find a standard bra that was comfy with two, only got one boob now but it’s a biggie proportionate to the rest of me so virtually impossible. Prosthesis aren't great, the weights all wrong, so rather than be lumpy and lopsided I don’t usually bother.
Wasted so much money trying then stumbled across sports bras in Lidl of all places. Crop top style, really firm, supportive elastic material with wide straps that don’t cut. They come in quite frequently, would give one a go. If they work on my shape they’ll be great on perky (you can go off people you know 😁) people. They’re around a fiver.

Wish I had enough to put into oneBlush

I've got small B cup boobs and quite a boney chest and have always struggled with underwired bras digging in. I now only wear non-wired bras, luckily there's loads more choice now with those, can get some really nice ones. I've chucked all my wired ones away.

OneStepSideways · 07/03/2019 10:39

I only wear sports bras or non-wired sporty styles with light padding. I'm small but need a bit of support/lift (and I like the padding as it protects them from bumps/knocks/toddler knees!)

I only go bra-less at night, or it feels like wearing pjs during the day!

Fiveredbricks · 07/03/2019 10:42

Laura Ashley bralets. They're like the short vests/crop tops most of us girls used to wear in the 90s from Tammy Girl...

I'm only a 38B/C though so can afford no support day to day (apart from at the gym or running).

BuffaloCauliflower · 07/03/2019 10:47

@Fiveredbricks do you mind me asking what dress size you wear?

babysharkah · 07/03/2019 11:05

I have relatively small boobs but I hate nit wearing something, bra letters or a vest with a shelf are the way forward!

babysharkah · 07/03/2019 11:06

@BuffaloCauliflower I'm a 38b and wear a 16. My back is definitely that broad!

BuffaloCauliflower · 07/03/2019 11:11

@babysharkah it may well be but it’s still a big back measurement even for a 16. My aunt is a 32 and a size 16. Have you tried the boob or bust calculator recently? Not saying you’re wrong but worth checking

MrsMcW · 07/03/2019 11:13

I have huge boobs so can't win either way. Feel very uncomfortable without a bra, but have yet to find a supportive bra that doesn't dig in under my armpits and where the straps don't cut into my shoulders.

picklemepopcorn · 07/03/2019 11:55

Does anyone know about the merits of wearing a bra?
Obviously a badly fitted one causes all sorts of problems, but no bra at all?
What about cultures where women don't wear bras, do they have health issues?

I'm not convinced that going without causes sagging- and if it does, that's when you could put a bra on.

What do you reckon? Why are we all attempting to hoist our bosoms up?

WFTisgoingoninmyhead · 07/03/2019 12:01

I have massive boobs, I am a 34E and I hate wearing a bra, if my boobs stayed where they were created I would NEVER wear one, but years of breastfeeding has made them journey south and I have to wear one. Once I am rich I intend to have a Boob Job to put them back in place. (I may google it now, I am sure I can get it on finance!)

LittleCandle · 07/03/2019 12:15

Contrary to what often appears to be popular opinion, bra sizes are no more regulated than clothes sizes. What might fit in one brand of bra is hopeless in another. Each bra needs to be tried on and checked by someone who has been trained to fit. I was horrified when M&S changed my favourite t-shirt bra. I bought my usual size after a quick try and the first day of wearing it was hell. I then discovered if i tipped my boobs into it (something I never did, despite knowing this is supposedly the 'proper' way to put a bra on) it was fine.

I wear a bra because there is nothing more uncomfortable, for me, than my boobs swinging about unfettered. Considering I breastfed 2 babies for a reasonable amount of time, they are not too droopy, but certainly nowhere near as perky as I would like. At home, I'll cheerfully wear a soft, stretchy bra top, but if I am going anywhere, I want a decent, supportive bra.

littlepeas · 07/03/2019 12:22

I used to have really big boobs - not sure how big exactly, but when I had my reduction I was spilling out of a 30HH, so I would say at least a 30J or possibly even bigger. I used to only feel comfortable in a bra - used to wear them to bed, wore one in labour (refused to take it off) until they took me for my c section, etc.

I've had a reduction now and, going by my back measurement, am still around a 30F - however I can no longer bear bras with this back size - I find it awful and uncomfortable. They are much perkier, which I think may have something to do with it - I used to need lots of scaffolding type support from my bra and now I don't and I don't like the feeling of being trussed up. I have gone back to the old M&S style of measuring and generally now wear a 34D - weirdly this doesn't ride up my back, but a 32 does! No idea why! I'd still rather wear no bra at all, or very light support sports bras.

I’m a 36D and wear these.

“Bliss” and “life changing” are an understatement.

TennisPlaya · 07/03/2019 12:40

M&s soft non underwire bras are the best. I also find it more comfortable to use a bra extender than get a larger band size as that messes up cup comfort

NameChange992 · 07/03/2019 12:53

The boob or bust method doesn’t work for me. I tried it when i’d gained some weight and needed some new bras and would literally needed to have broken a couple of my ribs to get the size they suggested done up.

It obviously varies depending on your shape, I carry almost no fat around my rib cage and wonder if that’s the key thing.

I stick firmly with the old add 4 method and love my bras - much more comfortable to wear one than not, including to sleep.

Sirrah · 07/03/2019 12:58

I only wear undersides bras for special occasions, and I used to go without as much as possible until I tried the soft vest-top type. Now I'm happy, boobs are kept in place, and no wires digging in!

BloodyDisgrace · 07/03/2019 13:00

I'm ok in a bra (32C tits), in fact will feel cold without wearing one :) Ad the shape won't be that good.

PickleFish · 07/03/2019 13:08

I'm really struggling right now. I was measured as 34D or DD at a couple of places, but can't find any that fit well and are comfortable. But I hate the feeling of going without, either. I like the underwire cups - but my problem is the rolls of fat I have are right where the back band is - I'm a size 16 - and even having lost some weight doesn't stop it constantly rolling up. I've tried tighter and tighter back bands, but I just get sore red marks from it digging in, but still doesn't stop the rolling. I've tried larger back bands, but that doesn't help either. I have quite sloped shoulders and quite high boobs, so the shoulder straps have to be shortened quite a lot or the slip off, so a looser band isn't great either.

A bralette sounds good, but none seem to have underwire or actually thick and firm bands - they're such soft material that of course they roll up.

I need something really structured and firm, but where?! Even side boning is just plastic and can roll up on me. A sports bra would be OK if it had wires, but I'd like a fairly nice looking one, and that's not easy either, finding something that is nice for an every day bra not just sports.

Any ideas? At the moment I'm constantly adjusting, pulling, unrolling, loosening, tightening, throughout the day, and it's uncomfortable in that sense - but I hate the feeling of heavy boobs swinging around without a bra/without wired cups, too.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 07/03/2019 13:14

34GG I’m only out of a bra when showering. I’m like two water filled condoms otherwise🤣 but dp and previous dp’s appear to love them🤷🏻‍♀️ I think when you are in one all the time, you just get used to it, hence not being in one is uncomfortable. The trick is though to make sure you are wearing the correct size. I’ve said this before- went into M&S wearing a 32DD when I was a teen and was measured and told I was a 32C despite me saying I wasn’t. I did laugh at the service ladies face when I pulled back the curtain to reveal my boobs spilling out everywhere and only my nipples being contained. After more measuring and lots of different bras tried, I walked out with a 32E. Went up to a K when pregnant with dc2, but now at a GG. I think I’m staying at the size now.

RiverTam · 07/03/2019 13:17

I've been measured in Bravissimo and no way can I wear what they say I should. Even a band size up I find uncomfrtable.

And one of my shoulders now has a dent in it, so I find them uncomfy there too.

lunicorn · 07/03/2019 13:17

Yes, fairly comfortable. I like s lacy Triumph one and a similar John Lewis one. I wouldn't like the chafing feeling of not wearing one.

LeSquigh · 07/03/2019 13:26

I’m not comfortable in a bra or out of one. I’m a 34FF, they went down to a 30E when I lost weight and up to a 36J when pregnant. They are too big and wang about with no bra on. I am only comfortable when they are floating in the bath 🤣

SweatyUnderboob · 07/03/2019 13:28

I have humongous jugs, F, G, H cup. Have been wearing sports bras since I gave up my corporate job a few years back. Much more comfy but my boobs are now showing their age.
