To not cook pancakes for breakfast?

My 7 year old was nearly in tears that mum isn't doing pancakes for breakfast on pancake Day. Am I a selfish cow? (They can have them tomorrow night....tonight is parents evening, swimming, and fitness class). Unless Dad will cook them for the kids later on.....

I am not making pancakes on pancake day. I am making pancake whenever I feel like it. Seriously all those 'days' are a nightmare!

SweetheartNeckline · 05/03/2019 14:23

I think people are being a bit harsh here! Weekday mornings are crazy. I have 3 DC and there is no way we could have had pancakes this morning. We're having them tonight but want to enjoy them together, sat down with DC able to do their own toppings. If DC are in infant school (OP says DD is 6) they often need a fair amount of input in the morning, it is not the same as older DC who get themselves ready.

Today 14:05 diddl

"I can't believe how much flak the Op is getting.
The kid can have pancakes later-no drama"

But OP says they aren't having pancakes later.....

Captaindobbin · 05/03/2019 14:29

I thought everyone’s kids had eggs and porridge for breakfast on mumsnet Grin we had pancakes this morning and it took no longer than those things to make. Made the batter the night before and chopped some fruit up while the pancakes cooked. C’mon kids love pancake day, you could indulge them for one day a year.

Dementedswan · 05/03/2019 14:34

My dc have either pancakes or egg on toast for breakfast every morning. Today was no exception, pancakes as usual for breakfast but, they will have pancakes for supper too. They can't wait!

ceeveebee · 05/03/2019 14:36

Seriously how can it take 15 mins to make a batter. I put flour, eggs and milk in my nutri blender, literally takes 30 seconds. Then 1 minute per pancake. Maybe I am not doing it right but quite frankly by the time they’re covered in Nutella/lemon and sugar they all taste the same!

Pk37 · 05/03/2019 14:40

We never have them for breakfast on pancake day , it’s always after dinner .

MulticolourMophead · 05/03/2019 15:22

We'll be having pancakes later for tea. I use an American recipe as it's thicker. I'll also be cooking them in the sandwich toaster, as it's cleaner.

MulticolourMophead · 05/03/2019 15:25

I only do pancakes for breakfast at weekends. I am on my way to work by 7am, and the DC aren't fussed at doing things themselves in the morning, preferring toast or cereal.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 05/03/2019 15:30

When I was a child and teen(60s and 70s) Mum made them as a teatime meal. Could have as many as we wanted but back then, at least in our house, we just had sugar and lemon with them .

This I continue now in my home . Will do them about 5.30 but if my DSs are hungry later I will cook them something else , but the pancakes suffice usually., I cheat though and use the powder you add water too and shake . It works for me.

masktaster · 05/03/2019 15:44

Can I ask what people put in savoury ones though please?

DM used to do them with brie. DP is fond of spinach and ricotta in them, so we do that a fair bit (not just pancake day!). Mushrooms work well. Honestly, can't go far wrong with cheese.

diddl · 05/03/2019 16:00

"But OP says they aren't having pancakes later....."

From the OP-"Unless Dad will cook them for the kids later on....."

And at 11:27:30-"As it is I think Dad will do them."

StillCoughingandLaughing · 05/03/2019 16:11

Plus they would still be having them later either way - later this week.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 05/03/2019 16:14

OP, why would it take you longer than that? Batter (eggs, flour, milk) takes 3 mins (even with my 3-year old helping!). You just pop them in a bowl and mix. Why does it take you longer? Then a minute to cook per pancake. So 8 more mins. 11 mins in total. Quick to make, quick to eat. Can you describe what it is you do that takes a long time?

But she’s not trying to set a world record. If Pancake Day is meant to be fun and a bit of a treat, why would you rush it as much as possible to cram it in before school? It’s not exactly child abuse to say ‘Wait until later’.

OP - I think you’ve responded very calmly to some very rude and frankly ridiculous comments. You’re also being a damn sight more sensible than the competitive parents who drop everything to do exactly as their little darlings want at any time.

Bellatrix14 · 05/03/2019 17:16

I am amazed by all the people suggesting the OP is being at all unfair on her children. Having them tomorrow is entirely reasonable given how busy you are today. It’s a not overly special food item which vaguely links to a religious event that they probably have no interest in, and as such it can wait until tomorrow. I will be slightly more sympathetic if it turns out your child is a practising Christian Wink If you were at home this even and just refusing to make them because you couldn’t be bothered then my view would be very different, but you’re not! Do they normally have them for breakfast on pancake day and that’s why they were upset over it?

U2HasTheEdge · 05/03/2019 17:35

Pancakes here for tea. No way would I make them for breakfast. Especially not for five children, three of them teens with big appetites.

I would feel a bit mean making them wait until tomorrow though, but if they have to wait it is hardly the end of the world.

Jenniferyellowcat · 05/03/2019 17:56

I do not make them for breakfast, as I don’t have time. I never had them for breakfast on pancake day and survived. And I am sure that one year I did them the day after when I had more time. Not the end of the world Hmm

It’s another one of those things that has got out of hand as a parenting tickbox. Some parents round here did them for breakfast (as posted on Facebook) and were planning to do them for tea too. Savoury and sweet. One mum is doing two different pancake styles.

My kids’ school also had them at lunch. How many pancakes does a child need? (Does everyone then give stuff up for lent?)

limitedperiodonly · 05/03/2019 18:08

Weird. Normally Mumsnet tells people to charge their children rent at 18 or kick them out.

I wouldn't charge them rent but wouldn't make them pancakes at 7am. I don't even know how to make pancakes.

sashh · 06/03/2019 05:05

*I am not making pancakes on pancake day. I am making pancake whenever I feel like it. Seriously all those 'days' are a nightmare!^

Yes but this is one of the original ones, it goes back centuries, it's not like a Christmas Jumper day.

Actually I think it the OPs son is so desperate for pancakes he should spend the rest of lent with no meat, flour, eggs, sugar whatever else people used to not be allowed to eat.

Tumbleweed101 · 06/03/2019 06:36

I wouldn’t have time to mess about cooking pancakes in the morning 😮. Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday are always an evening thing and have been since I was a child.

user1474894224 · 06/03/2019 22:14

@StillCoughingandLaughing thanks for your kind words. (I posted as a bit of tongue in cheek as obviously I didn't think I was unreasonable or I would have got up 11 minutes earlier to make the 8 pancakes!! I wonder how long it actually took Dad last night. I of course don't know as I was out at my 'selfish' exercise class. And because dad agreed to make the pancakes I sloped off even earlier and got an extra class in too! So win win.)
