To not cook pancakes for breakfast?

My 7 year old was nearly in tears that mum isn't doing pancakes for breakfast on pancake Day. Am I a selfish cow? (They can have them tomorrow night....tonight is parents evening, swimming, and fitness class). Unless Dad will cook them for the kids later on.....

We never have them for breakfast but will have them for lunch and dinner. I don't like pancakes very much and hate pancake Tuesday, I will spend the whole afternoon and early evening making pancake after pancake after pancake. I buy ready made to eat as they are cooking, with 5 DC including two adults and a teen and two children that I mind we go through dozens hundreds of the things.

SaucyJack · 05/03/2019 10:18

Ready made scotch pancakes may well be easy, but they don’t exactly spark joy.

I think there are two camps here; those who would rather eat any old crap at any old time of the day, just so they can meet the criteria of having a pancake on Shrove Tuesday- and those who would rather wait until they had the time and the family together round the table to do the full four courses properly*.

(*No prizes for guessing which camp I’m in)

I used to make pancakes and waffles routinely for breakfast when my children were young. I would mix all the dry ingredients at night, and add the wet in the morning. It was no more taxing than any other breakfast.

If you have to prepare it in the evening beforehand then of course it is more taxing, for Gawd's sake.

starray · 05/03/2019 10:20

It's not a big deal to us, but it is to a 7 year old. I would just get some ready made pancakes today and let her have them. And then have pancakes tomorrow as well.

We're having pancake day feast in our house tonight and my 8 year old is excited!!!

StickyShoess · 05/03/2019 10:21

SaucyJack I like ready made scotch pancakes 🤷🏻‍♀️

thedisorganisedmum · 05/03/2019 10:28

because it's one day a year? It's not very important in the grand scheme of things, but these little things can be a big deal for a little person.

It's very possibly that I suffer from working-mum guilt, so I am a bit soft for things like that. I wouldn't cancel my exercise class all the time, but for a birthday or a treat day like pancake day... yes, I'd put my kids first. They already come second to my job, so that's enough.

thedisorganisedmum · 05/03/2019 10:32

SaucyJack
you can do both! That's the point.
Give a ready-made when you are rushing, and have a proper pancake meal with all the trimmings when more convenient.

We do that for birthdays too, sometimes we are too busy (or not even home) on one of the kids birthday, they are given a card and a cupcake or other on the day, and we celebrate properly at the weekend.

It's not any old crap, it's a treat that your kid enjoy. No one is asking you to shove down a shop bought pancake down a kids throat is they hate them, because its' pancake day!

outpinked · 05/03/2019 10:33

We’ve always had them for dinner on pancake day, not breakfast. I thought most people did this.

GerryblewuptheER · 05/03/2019 10:36

I didn't even realise it was pancake day . Dd2 had asked for them for breakfast it's the only reason I made them. And no she didnt even know what day it was today let alone the fact or was shrove Tuesday. Grin

tomhazard · 05/03/2019 10:39

Well we have hectic mornings so I am doing them for dinner. I think it's a bit pointless to do it a day late- if I wasn't going to be in tonight I'd have just got up early and sorted it. Kids love pancake day.

doIreallyneedto · 05/03/2019 10:41

@SaucyJack - those who would rather wait until they had the time and the family together round the table to do the full four courses properly.

What's the 4th course? I only ever manage 3. Although one ds does put maple syrup on his instead of sugar and lemon so maybe that counts as 4 courses?

I'm definitely in the latter camp. My kids would be really disappointed with a shop bought pancake. They'd much rather wait until we had the full feast later in the day, or, if necessary, the following day.

doIreallyneedto · 05/03/2019 10:45

Those saying it's a bit pointless doing it if it's not on the day - why do you think that? Are you particularly religious so you need to get rid of all the flour, sugar, eggs before lent starts? I love pancakes and will happily eat them any day.

People celebrate birthdays on a different day to their birthday if that's more convenient. People who work on christmas day or who have custody arrangements where they don't have the kids on christmas day, do their celebrations on a different day. Are they all wrong?

Shamoogren · 05/03/2019 10:46

I'm a rubbish cook and hopelessly disorganized. I get a bowl a fork an egg some flower and some milk. I whisk it up and poor a bit into a hot pan with butter. Done!

BlueSkiesLies · 05/03/2019 10:50

Pancake day = pancakes for dinner

Start off with a few savory ones the move onto sweet ones. Not something to be rushed in the morning IMO.

thedisorganisedmum · 05/03/2019 10:51

It's about the kids expectations. If they are happy to wait until the weekend, it's no big deal.
If they are really excited about pancake day, then why not give them a damn pancake! if they dislike ready made ones, of course don't force them for the sake of it. No one would take their kids to McDonalds if the kids hated the place, but a bit of junk food - burger or pancake - won't hurt them if it's a one-off.

We don't celebrate everything on the day, I have been away on my kids birthdays and probably will be again, but at least their birthday are acknowledged so they never feel like they miss out.

I just find it completely unnecessary to upset a child over a pancake when it's one day a year. Daily requests are a different matter.

SaucyJack · 05/03/2019 10:52

“What's the 4th course?“

Sweetcorn fritters and tomato salad first. Blueberry and cream next, followed by strawberry and Nutella.

Then lemon and sugar for the grand finale.

M4J4 · 05/03/2019 10:54

Why is the dad getting off scot free here?

Slippiepippie · 05/03/2019 10:55

Could you not have even bought the shitty packet ones?

I feel bad for the children they get excited by days like this and im sure theyll be hearing about their friends having pancakes this morning.

Although if you are definitely having them after school then i guess its ok.

reluctantbrit · 05/03/2019 10:55

We always do them for dinner so I was quite astonished that DD wanted them for breakfast. I really couldn't have fitted them in as I had 1 hour to get me, her and 3 rabbits fed, watered and ready to run out of the house.

doIreallyneedto · 05/03/2019 10:57

@thedisorganisedmum - don't be so grumpy, some of us like to do something a bit fun for their kids once in awhile.

I'm not at all grumpy. I was responding to the posters who are making out the kids will be scarred for life if they don't get pancakes this morning. Also, I do plenty of fun things with my kids. Quite nasty of you to suggest otherwise simply because I don't agree with you. As I said earlier, I will be doing 3 courses of pancakes this evening.

it wouldn't kill you to get up 30mn earlier or get a pack of ready-made if you haven't got time to wash your hair after breakfast and you don't want to stink the office out!

It doesn't take 30 minutes when you have 3 teenagers and 2 adults to cook for. My kids much rather wait and have a proper pancake feast later in the day (or even tomorrow) than have a pack of ready-mades. I'm not at all bothered about stinking the office out (one of the great benefits of having my own office) but I am bothered about getting everyone out the door on time.

mrsed1987 · 05/03/2019 10:58

I never had them as a kid unless they were ready done ones you just put in the oven to warm up as the batter smell makes my mum feel sick. If we did have them it was for pudding in the evening

doIreallyneedto · 05/03/2019 10:59

@SaucyJack - strawberry and Nutella

That sounds nice. I might buy some strawberries to have as an option along with the banana for the nutella and ice-cream ones.

M4J4 · 05/03/2019 10:59

@twooutofthreeaintbad

We had a tradition of going to a certain relatives for ours after school on pancake day. I am working late tonight so husband has suggested we have them tomorrow when we're all together for tea (in other words, you can make them wife)

I hope you said he can sodding well do it!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 05/03/2019 11:08

I love all the people insisting it takes a couple of minutes to make pancakes etc.

Also, aren't you meant to leave the batter for 20 minutes to settle or something?

RightOnTheEdge · 05/03/2019 11:08

YANBU OP. I didn't realise people took pancake day so seriously unless they were religious.
I'll make some tonight though because I like them.

Can I ask what people put in savoury ones though please?
I've only ever made sweet ones.
